De Quervain tenosynovitis - Post-Surgery Care Advice

NUH occupational therapist shares post-de Quervain tendon release surgery care advice, e.g. rehabilitation exercises, pain and swelling reduction tips and activity modifications to prevent occurrence of same condition in the other hand, etc.
After you have your bulky dressing removed, you should start doing light exercises, as tolerated to minimise internal scarring:
- Wrist movements
- Thumb movements
To reduce the pain and swelling of the affected hand:
- Take the pain relief medication as prescribed by your doctor
- Elevate your hand above your heart level when walking or sitting
- Avoid lifting objects heavier than 500 grams
- Avoid activities which require repeated arm/hand movement (e.g. chopping food, typing, etc.)
When your wound is fully healed, massage your scar to soften it. Do so with some moisturiser and increase pressure on the scar as the pain reduces.
To prevent de Quervain tenosynovitis, adopt activity modification in your daily activities to avoid awkward thumb positioning or forceful gripping pinching. You can do so by applying the “4R” principles (Remove, Replace, Reduce and Rest). Learn more activity modification tips from • Management of De Querv...

Perfect and clear information , Thank you. What if I don't have a big bandage ? It is just a small one covering about 7cm , could I do some excercises from the above ? This is the 7th day after surgery .😅

A question, not a comment, will you still have the same strength in your wrist as you did before surgery?

I developed dequrvains from holding a tool similar to a pencil and using it for several hours a day. Usually with very short breaks and no stretching/exercises while working with it. Within a few months I've developed the first signs of pain, and it kept getting worse despite rest and physio.

Hello. I had de quervain surgery in May last year. Now, when I apply a little pressure with my thumb, there is still pain. What is the reason for this? Also, what kind of wristband should I use for bodybuilding? Thank you.

I also did the surgery for de qervain in both wrists. Had unbearable pains after though until I purchased the muscle stimulator machine on Amazon and do the shock therapy on my self every night. Such great relief.

@ I did the surgery in October of 2022. I still experience extreme pains from time to time especially when I over work my hand (lifting weights) or when I type but, once I feel the pain coming on I use the machine and I get instant relief.

Great help and advice, however the music played while your talking made it difficult to hear you speaking.
