Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery - Post Surgery Care Advice

NUH occupational therapist shares post carpal tunnel release surgery care advice, including wound care, exercises to help hand and wrist recover better and faster, scar massage to improve flexibility and reduce pain, tips to reduce swelling of hand and activities to avoid while the wound heals.
Wound care
During the first two weeks after the surgery, protect your wound from coming into contact with water or contaminants.
Exercises to help hand and wrist recover better and faster:
- Differential tendon gliding exercises
- Wrist movements
- Thumb movements
- Median nerve gliding exercise
Scar massage
It is important to massage the scar to help improve flexibility and reduce pain. Scar massage should start one to two days after your stitches are removed.
Tips to reduce swelling of hand:
- Try to elevate your hand above your heart level when walking around or sitting down
- When you are sleeping, elevate your hand above your heart level by resting it on a couple of pillows
Activities to avoid:
Actions that require forceful and tight gripping, such as:
- Wringing towels
- Carrying heavy items with your hands
- Use of power tools

Thank you very much Miss Wenlin for these video. I had surgery 6 days ago, I started slowly doing the exercises day two. Today my hand is moving freely, almost no pain ( I still have stitches), I'm able to use it to grab light things. I'm amazed how my hand has improved each day with the exercises. My surgeon told to make one fist each hour or so with the hand placed in a backward position, not to strain the scar because of the nerve pushing when it slides under the skin (under the scar), that's why I waited until day 3 to start the exercises but they have been an really good way to make my hand to gain all the mobility. I'm going for the other hand and a trigger finger at 4 weeks. I found a video for trigger finger 'Trigger Finger Release Surgery - Post surgery CAr Advice'' from the same occupational therapist, I for sure will add her advice and exercises to the carpal tunnel surgery exercises; I'm sure it will be of great help in the recovery from my other hand. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for this detailed information 🥲🥲I feel so much pain & anxiety after yesterday's surgery 🥲 I was trying to move my fingers but it increases my pain on the surgery location 😓😓😓thanks for informing that u did exercise after 3 days only. I was worried while seeing about exercises, and the pain caused. So I should wait for atleast 3 days to do exercises 😊👍then maybe it will slowly heal then ... also I need advice to reduce anxiety caused due to this post surgery pain 😓

@@ameeraismailraother6827Hi, don't stress only do your exercises at the extend it doesn't increases pain. I had pain for days, I toke tylenol for 4 or 5 days around the clock to keep pain controled. At one week or so I started massaging the incision (taking care not to push to feel to much pain); after 2 days of massaging again I saw an increase of mobility. All that with the left hand. The right hand is now 4 weeks, I didn't feel much pain after surgery at the point of wondering if somethind had been cut. But what has been painful is the trigger finger surgery (the ring finger). I have had pain in de side of the wrist, in the palm of the hand also, in the incision. I have been doing the exercises the same lady gives for it in another video. The left hand is 8 weeks and is quite functionnal now but I have some little pain in the scar, it's normal it's new tissue. I make renovation work at home, I consider it has been not bad and I expect full recovery with full streingth back. Me too I was wondering about the outcome but now I see there was nothing to worry, courage all will be right 😁

I started moving my fingers right after my surgery. It helped greatly in preventing pain. Placing ice packs on the area every hour for 20 minutes. Placing your operated hand/arm on pillows while sitting. By doing all of this, I have had less pain. I am 6 days post surgery.🎉🎉🎉

I walked a few miles the day of the surgery (with my arm in a sling) and returned to running 5 days after the surgery with no problems. Biking took a few weeks. Swimming about 5 weeks when the last of my scab was gone.
