Day 72 | Tramily Reunited and 30 Mile Day | Pacific Crest Trail Thru hike

Фильм және анимация

Woke up and started hiking. My tramily and I met back up a couple miles up on trail. So good to see them and meet them again! We had so much fun retelling stories of times apart!

I like how the mossy trees act as compasses. The moss grows on the north sides of the trees.

Right, all four "North Sides" of the trees 😂 Moss grows most on the wet side of the trunk, which means the side that is most exposed to the prevailing winds in that area, which has nothing to do with which direction is magnetic or true North. In areas that have feet of snow accumulation each winter the most grows above the typical annual snow depth, which is why the lower trunks are mostly bare of moss, with three downhill side of a tree trunk on a slope having less moss. Moss growth is not an accurate way to determine North.

@@memathews Oh. I heard and observed wrong then. Of course it makes sense that wind would hamper moss growth. I think sunlight does also. The most sunlight is on the south side of trees, the least sunlight is on the north side of trees. That's got to have some effect on the moss. That's also got to have some effect on the foliage above. Trees and smart homeowners want their solar collectors on the south sides where there's a lot more solar energy.

Awesome dialog! Same 6 lines. "Tramily, back with the tramily, so happy!" "Moss on trees, pretty!" "Good day, long day, 30 miles today." "Awww trees, flowers, pretty, cool!" "So good to be back on trail..." "Back on the trail, so good."

Wow, 30 miles in one day is an accomplishment after a week off. It takes just three days of inactivity to begin losing leg strength. But you're young, so maybe that helps? It looks like you're hiking in s mixed conifer first now, not just pines. I've noticed some hemlock, grand fir, noble fir, white fir and possibly others, along with a mix of different pines. You'll be losing the pines as you move further north and closer to the Pacific.

Couldn't help thinking about a joke, because of what you said 0:30. Everybody looking at the "homeless guy". Ready. What is the difference between a hobo and a Pct thru hiker? ? ? ? 2652 miles.
