Day 4 Quitting Smoking & Raypak Gas Pool Heater Rollout SW Open - How to Repair

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Really craving a smoke - but with 3 solid days under my belt I'm not stopping. Today starts Day 4 of being cigarette free. During this service call we diagnose a water leak on a Raypak 400k BTU gas pool heater heat exchanger which caused the system to have flame roll out. This temporary solution bought the client some needed time. Want to support this channel and Mikey Pipes? Keep Reading....

Quitting is like someone dying - on your mind every waking minute. Slowly it turns to only thinking a few times a day, to once a day, once every few days... it's the mental challenge that's tough. I've found that simply recognizing trigger scenarios, not avoiding them, was enough to keep me from picking one up (working in the garage, mowing the grass, stepping outside after dinner... you get the idea). Best of luck, we're all rooting for you.

High current devices are usually more efficient at 240 volts because it cuts the current in half over a 120 Volt device. Less current means less heat loss in the supply wires and motor windings. They probable used 240V for the boiler power because the pool pump is using 240V so that way they didn't have to run a separate 120V circuit just for the boiler power.

One thing I noticed is you have malocclusion. Perhaps deviated septum. You got the Tony soprano tone to your voice(not as bad)I have it too! To be honest mouth breathing is robbing you of 10-30years of your lifespan. Sleep with breath right strips?.. Check out James Nestor’s book/Audiobook/interviews on YT . The book is called Breath. Pretty much mouth breathing/sleep apnea is killing us because we have shrunken mouths. Breathing excercises help. But modern day food is soft and processed. We’re a species that evolved by chewing tough gamey meat/cartilage for 4 hours a day . Modern luxuries like processed food shrunk our mouths. The roof of the mouth is the base of the nose. Don’t sleep on this issue. Things can be done to fix it and if you have kids there are ways you can help them avoid it. It’s been a life changing topic for me that’s why I’m ranting. The lower amp draw on a higher voltage is true. The reason is to have smaller conductors feeding whatever it is hooked up to. I pretty much only work on 460v equipment, occasionally some 208v. Mostly 3 phase. It's "efficiency" is in the fact smaller conductors are used and spread across all 3 phases to accomplish the same task. Voltage imbalance is whats important to pay attention to and gets missed

The reason the heater is wired to 240 V is just for convenience. It’s typical for simple installations to feed the heater from the same circuit that runs the pool pump, and most in-ground pool pumps are wired for 240 V. Some pool pumps are wired to 120 V, and some installs have a separate circuit for the heater, so the heater is designed so you can wire it for 120 V or 240 V, as needed. The heater draws barely any power at all, so supplying it with 120 V or 240 V doesn’t make much of a difference for efficiency.

120V Vs 240V there is no efficiency difference. You use fewer amps at 240V so you can use smaller wire, which is a cost savings. You can also get more power through the same size wire at 240V. However efficiency is the same as the wattage consumed is the same wither way. The efficiency savings with higher voltage really only comes in with super long runs where you start to save on I^2R losses. However in a household there is no difference.

The age old question 120V versus 240V. You are basically correct in what you have said. Appliances that need more watts to do their work eg. dryers and cookers are connected to 240V. Watts = V x I therefore a heating appliance connected to 240V uses half the current (I). There is also a saving in cable cost as the higher the voltage the smaller the cross sectional diameter the cable needs to be.

Benefit of running 240vac is in smaller gauge wire for the same power due to lower amperage. Not to mention, I believe in North America the 120 vac circuits are limited to 20 amps. Likely the gas pool heater was designed so it could drop in and use the electrical wired for an electric heater which would be 230. PS. 120/240 vac is the service voltage standard provided from the transformer. Equipment will have a NEMA voltage of 115/230 vac listed, which is the design voltage of equipment optimum operation with the expectation of some voltage drop from the transformer to the equipment. The tolerances required by each standard cover essentially the same voltage range.

I wonder if the 240 vs 120 is a matter of convenience in pools? I don't work with pool stuff much but I would suspect most pool motors run at 220V and therefore the heater manufacturer wires it that way to make install easier? Also, does this manufacturer make an electric heater version? If so, they can just reuse a lot of the same design and parts by setting the gas version to use 220V since the electric version would have to use 220V due to current draw.

240v is more efficient in the sense of amperage I believe. A 240v appliance will pull less amps then the same 120v appliance but I believe the wattage may be the same. Usually 240v outlets or circuits are much larger in amps than 120 circuits which means you are able to handle more on the same circuit then you would be able to on a typical 120v hence it being more efficient.

Theoretically, 120v vs 240v is the same on efficiency/power transfer. However, high wattage on 120v , if pushing wire size for current, could get more voltage drop, thus slightly less efficient. I prefer using 240v at 2Kw or higher. Copper isn’t cheap, takes larger size to carry more current at lower voltage. I’ve done wiring repair in Europe, and I do like higher voltage/less copper is easier to work with. My experience there is 380/3ph 50 Hz, and each leg is 230v. Amazing how small wire is to wire a 3-ph stove there. 5-wire, and outside diameter of the sheath is similar to one of the cheap orange extension cords here (never use them for power tools, they will fail faster -I only buy 12ga extension cords for tools). Congrats on the cig effort. I’m still struggling.

The pool heater provided for a dual voltage primary on the control transformer. This is to offer the convenience of connecting to an existing nearby voltage source - 120v or 240v. Also, The issue of efficiency is not applicable as appliances are designed and the circuit wiring is sized to handle the current and voltage appropriate for the job. An example would be a dual voltage motor. When the motor is connected to 240 volts the windings of the are connected in series. When the motor is connected to 120 volts the windings connected in parallel. Thus the windings see the same current no matter what voltage is applied. However, the circuit supplying power to the motor may be sized for either voltage but the higher voltage would mean less current in the wiring. This provides for less voltage drop in the circuit thus less loss do to heating of the wire. This could be called better efficiency but only for circuit not the motor.

nice cooked pvc. I have seen that happen when the water flow switch and temp. thermostat wasn't working kosher and they had very low flow from clogged filters/strainer. the heater was dumping out very hot water enough to soften the pipe. I don't think the pipe could get hot enough via the outside with being exposed to flame roll-out, the water moving through would cool it too much. I suppose that could happen with low flow and the pump suddenly being shut off, with gravity pulling very hot water down the pipe, that kind of explains the pipe collapsing in on itself instead of expanding in diameter. probably still a flow proving or limit thermostat not working right and it kept flame on.

Generally speaking a 240V power supply ingests half as much current as a 120V power supply, this means that power lost to a fixed voltage drop (like a diode) is cut in half and power lost to a resistive load (like a heating element) is cut to a quarter... much more efficient... If you're pulling 1000W through a diode bridge with normal 0.7V drop diodes in it you'll be pulling 8.33A at 120 and 4.166A at 240 so you end up dropping 11.66W and 5.83W respectively. There are some other components in there that will benefit but that is the largest and most obvious example

Double voltage=half the current. If it's 10 amps @120 it would be 5 @240. Wattage is the same (voltage x amperage = wattage). Higher voltage allows you to run smaller wire. Also on inductive loads (motors, etc.) There is less lost in heat due to fewer amps drawn. The starting is easier too. That equals increased efficiency.

Indeed, at higher voltages, electrical equipment is more efficient. At higher voltage it requires less current to get the same power (Power = Voltage X Current). That means manufacturers can downsize the wiring to deliver the same power. Also, energy losses due to heat in electrical conductors are less, because heat generated is proportional to the current (Square of current * Electrical resistance).

What I notice about this pool heater is that it's not protected properly from the elements (rain or salt water). Rain water may be getting on the sides of the unit and causing all the rust to form. The rust could be making its way up through the exchanger and causing a form of electrolysis to happen where you have the metal from the heater casing effecting the copper or Nickel tubes of the exchanger. As you can see from the bottom the rust is eating through the unit on both sides but the eroding exchanger appears to be rusting from the top down as well. If they had a protective hood or shroud over the unit, it would have lasted them longer then it did. Just my opinion I could be wrong.

On the voltage question is 240v. more efficient than 110v. The short answer in no. The long answer is, for any given power draw the current on a 240v system is half of the that on a 110v system. Theoretically the voltage drop on a 110 volt system is slightly higher but for most circuits the difference is not material. The advantage of 240v and lower comparative current is smaller gauge conductors.

From my understanding 220 vs 110 volts is more common for “energy efficiency” to reduce carbon emissions. It’s slowly becoming a national law for green emissions. I could be totally wrong. Not a plumber. On another note. How old is this unit?.. i have a very similar model.only a few months old. The insulation burned away. That rollout sw alert popped up. I do have rust on the top part of the inside of the unit already. Waiting for my pool company to get back to me. Why are these units not properly insulated from rain?. Is this common in most pool furnaces or just this model/brand?

mikey... love the videos but wattage is wattage. A pump that can be wired with both 120v or 240v will not draw less power at 240v. The 240v only helps the pump start more efficiently (less amperage spike at startup) prolonging its life. Ex. If a pump at 120v draws 3 amps that equals 360 watts. If that same pump is wired at 240v it will draw half the amps, yes but its still 360 watts. In some cases taking the same example the pump at 240v will draw 358 watts or something. So yes, it does "save" energy but not really

Thats a GOOOOOD question from a very observant technician named Dan. Why pay to run 220v lines to a pool heater that will run on 110? I'm betting there was either an electric pool heater or a AC condenser that got used for the new gas heater. 12/2 is alot cheaper than 10/2 UF.

Actually if a motor runs 110 @ 20 amps (12 guage wire) a 240 volt motor would run at 10 amps (withthe same overall amperage because 10 amps x 2 legs). A 220 motor will last longer because the windings run on half the amps and a smaller wire can be used due to less amps per conductor. The electricy flows back and forth 60 times per second and on a double 220/240 circuit one leg goes back when the other goes forth so one common (if needed) can handle both loads simultaneously without being overloaded.

It's just OHM'S Law, Current squares with respect to power so doubling the voltage reduces current loss to the square root. So you can convey 1 kilowatt at 1 volt and 1 thousand amps or 1000 volts and 1 amp. But the 1000 amps will lose energy on resistance by the power of the square. That's why energy is transmitted at 13K to 2 million volts and over--per unit energy at lower voltage would require cabling so thick that you couldn't string it. You can't make the towers strong enough to support the weight. Good luck and hang in there with your smoking cessation.

When an appliance uses higher voltage it consumes less current or amps. If a dual voltage electric motor uses 10 amps at 120 volts. When wired for 240 it will use 5 amps. I cant explain it properly but I just Googled why does current draw go down when voltage goes up. Love the vids mikey and thanks again for the stickers

True it would be 10 amps on 100v but only 5 amps on 220v, but the 5 amps is on each leg of the 220 making it 10 amps total. The savings would come from less voltage loss on a 220 circuit.

The power lost to heat in a wire is I*I*R. So for a given gauge of wire the resistance of a length is fixed, but as you mentioned, the current will be 2x because it’s the same wattage load (I*V) for 120V vs 240. Given the formula above the power wasted in the wire will be 4x.

Great content man! However, there actually is no difference in efficiency between 120 and 240 volts, at least in the context you speak of. Explanation: Watts = amps * volts - When you wire, for example, a single phase AC motor for 120 volts, it may draw like 10 amps of current, but when you wire it for 240 volts, it’ll draw around half the current. So in the end, the wattage (true measurement of power) is around the same with MAYBE a SLIGHT difference. 120v * 10 amps = 1200 watts 240v * 5 amps = 1200 watts
