I used to be a pool tech before getting into hvac. These heaters are a blessing. You can literally check all the safeties with a continuity check. I agree... do not bypass a safety, but if you think you found a bad switch bypass it to verify the heater will run and then replace the bad part.

Mikey, put a pressure switch and add the roll over switch back in. Get him his pool heater working. Until the heat exchanger leaks, it’s a good heater .

And a high heat limit in the circuit. I wonder if these have a pressure relief valve in case the water was trapped in it and it became a bomb...

that loose wire between switch and thermostat at 7:21 is likely the whole issue and why some bozo bypassed the safeties. those on/off switches are known to be failure points, especially with the heater outdoors without shelter. probably had other hacks there fiddling with it prior to you guys. although other parts can get intermittent and cause headaches, like the powerpile output, which should be close to 750mv with no load, it being only only 500-550 with no load, is likely dropping too low when connected and trying to open the gas valve, then the small loses through safeties will keep it from firing at all or very rarely. low voltage could be dirty pilot/adjusted too low/weak powerpile generator. simply check the powerpile voltage with it connected to the valve, pilot on and again with it trying to operate the main valve, I'm sure it will be well under 0.500, maybe even 0.400 and on the edge of pilot valve drop-out. I'm sure there's other issues with the unit at that age, dirty/plugged heat exchanger tubes(gas and water side both) dirty clogged burner tubes. so probably best to replace it, as much as I hate retiring old faithful equipment. 😒

While bosch doesn't make a pool heater someone does make a heat exchanger that you can install in the refrigerant loop and the cooling of your home can heat the pool water :)

I'm surprised Chris from HVACR videos hasn't come across this video yet. His biggest thing, or phrase is "big picture diagnosis". I'm sure he would love to get a little laugh out of this. Hopefully the homeowner does let you replace the unit that way you can do a thorough video of the replacement. Love your videos and just haven't had any time to ask for your stickers.

I can’t tell you how many issues I saw as a pool tech back in the mid 90’s! W3 had complaints from customers that the front panel of their heat would blow off every time the heater turned on! So many neglected heaters!

I had an indoor pool and the pool heating was done with a shell and tube heat exchanger and a 900 K boiler that also supplied the pool room base board. You could do a Bosch Singular and a shell and tube heat exchanger. $$$$$

I always liked milivolt assemblies. Heat when power is out. Kinda pointless in a pump required pool heater… Another interesting heater is the old tankless aquastar heaters. They didn’t use a MV generator, they have a simple pilot thermocouple, and the entire control system is mechanical. The gas valve is operated with a flow diaphragm, and the temp adjustment limits the rod travel. Only he pilot solenoid and the limit switch operates electrically…

I lay odds the intermittent condition was caused by high resistance in the contacts at the thermostat and / or the power switch. Probably been that way a while and progressively getting worse, causing Handy Hank to start bypassing safety controls.
