Day 1 - Camino Finisterre / Muxia - Santiago to Negreira - Day 55 Overall

The Camino Finisterre! Another new route and a lovely exit walk from Santiago. 21 kms today to Negreira. As this was a wind down walk for me I tried to lighten my load. I left a few things like my Sleeping bag, third set of socks, drinking hoses etc in Santiago. I planned to stay in private rooms.
I stayed here in Negreira. I had a whole top floor apartment! www.gronze.com/galicia/coruna...
The Albergue looked nice. I used the washing machine there.

The Camino de Santiago route from Santiago to Finisterre and onward to Muxía is a unique and spiritually significant extension of the traditional Camino pilgrimage. This route is often referred to as the "Camino to the End of the World" because Finisterre was historically believed to be the westernmost point of the known world.
Summary of the Route
1. *Santiago to Finisterre* (approximately 90 km): This segment takes pilgrims through lush Galician landscapes, small hamlets, and alongside beautiful coastlines. The walk typically takes about 3-4 days.
2. *Finisterre to Muxía* (approximately 30 km): This part of the journey connects two of Galicia's most mystical places. The path runs along rugged coastlines and offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. It usually requires an additional day.
What Makes It Great
- **Historical significance**: While the main Camino de Santiago routes culminate at the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, many pilgrims choose to continue to Finisterre and Muxía for additional reflection and to visit the sea, which adds a profound epilogue to their pilgrimage.
- **Natural beauty**: The route offers spectacular oceanic landscapes, cliffs, and sunsets over the Atlantic, providing a different experience compared to the more interior paths of other Camino routes.
- **Spiritual continuation**: The journey to Finisterre and Muxía is often seen as a continuation of the spiritual journey, with the ocean symbolizing endless possibilities and a renewal of spirit.
- **Less crowded**: This path is generally less trafficked than the more popular routes to Santiago, offering a more solitary and contemplative experience.
How It Differs from Other Routes
- **Geographic endpoint**: Unlike other routes that conclude at a religious monument, this route extends to what was considered the edge of the world, giving it a unique narrative and emotional impact.
- **Cultural elements**: The mix of Celtic and Christian traditions enriches this route, with various local legends and historical sites adding layers to the pilgrimage experience.
- **Environmental diversity**: The combination of coastal and rural landscapes offers a visual and atmospheric change from the often rugged terrains of other Camino paths.
This route not only provides a physical challenge but also offers a deeply enriching spiritual and emotional journey, making it a compelling choice for those seeking closure or new beginnings after reaching Santiago de Compostela.

The walk out of Santiago is really beautiful & even in peak season relatively quiet. Really enjoying watching this Rob.

Of the three approaches I've done into Santiago, the one coming back from the coast (so the opposite of what you did here) is I think the most beautiful. And the first view of the cathedral the best too as it emerges from the beyond the forest canopy as the only buildings you see. It's magical.

I was walking this stage three days ago (I reached Finistera today). I already miss it! As you approach the bridge in Ponte Maceira (where you saw the weir) there is a small path to the right which leads down to a quiet part of the river where you can go for a paddle.

@@robscamino it really is! I loved every second of it, as well as the Inglés before it (in spite of some brutal weather!). I am back in Santiago de Compostela now (as a tourist rather than a pilgim) and I already miss the weird and wonderful parallel universe which is the camino so much. While I am writing, a big thank you for your videos - they were a great help in preparing.

Nice walk thru the woods once out of SdC. At @10:45, was that the sound of the wind thru the leaves of the trees or nearby rushing water or both?
