Dave Edmunds vs Elvis Costello - Girls Talk Comparison

Ойын-сауық

In this video we're comparing Dave Edmunds and Elvis Costello. We don't know the song 'Girls Talk', so I guess this is a reaction as well. We can't wait to hear these two great artists. Enjoy!

There's no comparison for me, Dave Edmunds for the win :) Dave is a man of many talents, most of them unsung, wicked guitar player, producer, arranger, and from a more personal perspective, i love the guy for putting together the band for the Carl Perkins comeback show in the 80's, which is a bit of a holy grail to me.

I still have that LP! Love Dave, Nick Lowe and Rock Pile - such talent in the music industry and Dave is a brilliant guitarist (try him with The Sabre Dance). Elvis is one of my faves too but I give this one to Dave. Elvis did write it but Dave's arrangement was great. Bit embarrassing that you didn't know this!

I respectfully suggest when doing songs you're unfamiliar with for comparisons, you check out the details of the song. As @David Ellis points out, this was written by Elvis Costello, not Dave Edmunds. Always interesting to hear this kind of reaction (cover vs original) though, so hope you do more of them. As far as Dave goes, he's always been rockabilly influenced.

Dave Edmunds sound was actually very contemporary at the time his version was released. The Rockabilly revival was just taking off and a lot of songwriters were looking back at the pop music of the pre-Beatles era. Definitely DE for the win this time. Along with Nick Lowe he was a considerable and influential figure in the UK music scene at this time, maintaining a pop career alongside writing and production work.

The next year Elvis released his version as a B-Side & it was the version you played that eventually became a " Bonus " track on The Get Happy CD 💿 reissue in 1994. "Girls Talk" has an interesting history. Elvis Costello played it for Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds (all friends) back in early 1979. They loved it but Costello was so busy writing his first few classic albums as well as touring, he couldn't find time to record it. Rockpile did as Edmund's band on his album "Repeat When Necessary ". Then in late '79, both Linda Ronstadt and Costello recorded it, though EC's arrangement is quite different than Rockpile or Ronstadt. Elvis actually recorded a few versions of the song, claiming never to find the right arrangement for it. Several bands and singers have recorded it over the decades. I enjoy them all. Wonderful song with great Costello lyrics.

Can I just point out that one of my favourite pop song lines appears in this song "You may not be an old-fashioned girl, but you're gonna get dated" Has a brilliant duality that is double layered. You may not be old-fashioned NOW, but your style/attitude/outlook is going to get old. You might not be an old-fashioned girl, you may think you're very modern, but you are still going to be dated/courted/wooed by me. Each version of the sentence flips its focus halfway through. Each interpretation works and is (I am pretty sure) intentional. Lines like this do not come up very often in pop or rock music, but when they do ...

  • @t-mar9275

    @t-mar9275

Dave was the master of cover versions, with many being arguably to the original. In the case of Queen of Hearts, Dave had the original but it was so good that Juice's version isn't much more than a copy. It should have been a much bigger hit for Dave in the USA. I think the only reason that it was so big for Newton was because it was the follow-up for Angel In The Morning. Personally, my favourite cover of Dave's is Singing the Blues, which was originally sung by Marty Robbins but was a huge for Guy Mitchell. Of course, Dave's first solo hit, I Hear You Knocking, was a cover of an old Smiley Lewis blues record. I could go on and on. Just about anything that Dave did is worth a comparison to the original, though it's understandable to restrict them to his more popular records.

Corrections: The Elvis Costello version was recorded in OCT 1979, not 1994, as you state. The recording of this track was released in January 1980 as the B-side to the single “I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down.” Elvis didn’t “cover” the song, as it was Elvis Costello who wrote the song originally. He gave an early demo of it to Dave Edmunds, who immediately worked it up and released it and made it a hit single of his own. Later in 1980, Lynda Ronstadt recorded it as a single too, clearly arranged like the Dave Edmunds cover.

I forgot this was an Elvis Costello song. All I have to say is that me and my sister and some of our goofy friends were on an Australian TV show called Countdown, and we took turns shouting out ''girls talk'' and squealing parts of the lyrics while Mr Edmunds mimed his way through the song. We did the same thing to Nick Lowe, who mimed to Cruel To Be Kind on the same show. Both artists seemed amused and perhaps a little perplexed by our little effort. That's my Lowe/Edmunds story.

''Girls Talk'' was playing on my car radio this week, and I began hearing Gillian and her friends doing their squeal-singing. To be clear, I only did a couple of yells before deciding to leave the showing off to Gillian and her little friends. I think they had been scolded at one too many times, and decided to ''rebel''. We probably had too many Slurpees and Fanta in our system, and kids need to burn off energy - especially when they were in that studio. If anybody wishes to preserve ''Girls Talk'' in their minds, don't watch Dave Edmunds doing the song on Countdown Australia.

@@brockbranch838 Nick Seymour is in the 2nd video. From my understanding, the 2nd version had gotten limited exposure on Australian television because the original version of ''Who Listens'' was already a hit in Australia the previous year. The video for the 2nd version of ''Who Listens'' was only played on Australian television in conjunction with the 2nd version of ''Who Listens'' becoming a US Top 40 hit. The video for the 2nd version of ''Who Listens'' did get international distribution, and got played on European TV, as well as, an American TV program called Video Concert Hall. VCH would eventually evolve into MTV. Europe and Australia were the largest markets for music videos. Australia had about a dozen music video shows on Television in the late 70's (Countdown, Sound Unlimited, Nightmoves, Studio One, VideoDisc, Flashez, Music Express).... It seemed counter-intuitive to repeatedly play the video for the 2nd version of ''Who Listens To The Radio'', seeing as the first version was already a hit, and the 2nd version was only a hit in the US. Consequently, the video for the 2nd version of ''Who Listens To The Radio'' got buried in the passage of time. It took a British TV show called Get It Together to unearth the video for the 2nd verison of ''Who Listens''. I believe the broadcast tapes of ''Who Listens'' (V2) are deep in the MTV vaults. There are lost music videos of Midnight Oil, Ausralian Crawl, Mental As Anything, Boys Next Door/The Birthday Party... The Ears ''Leap for Lunch'' video had been unearthed after 30 years of buried deep in the archives. I believe the band themselves forgot that they even made it. Another weird video that had emerged was the original music video for The Church's Unguarded Moment. Singer, Steve Kilbey, hated the original video and forbade it to be distributed. It's the only Church video that had original drummer, Nick Ward. The video reared its ugly head after a few decades and Steve Kilbey is not happy about it. He thought it had been destroyed.

I think they should try both versions of that Sports song, and compare Herb Alpert and The Reels ''this guys in love'', though I was never a fan of either version of the Bacharach song.

No comparison. This song requires Dave Edmunds animal attack, not Elvis Costello's delicate brush strokes.

Please get your facts right. This song was written by Declan McManus (Elvis Costello), NOT Dave Edmunds. Edmunds had the first release, and perhaps the most popular version, but did not write the song. That said, they are very different styles - Edmunds more pop and Elvis...well, Elvis. Not very comparable.

Oh Please, Linda Ronstadt's cover blows them both away. Of course 52% of the success is due to Costello's music and lyrics.

DE is a technically better vocalist but comparisons are pointless. Lyrically and musically this song is just stereotypical of early Elvis Costello - I'd've thought anyone could have guessed it was one of his compositions (GVcalcar)

These people ain’t got a clue of what they’re talking about, Dave does a much better job with this song than Elvis does. Also Dave should be in the rock and Roll Hall of Fame so should Elvis if he isn’t in it as well because the R&R hall of fame is a freakin joke.

Elvis for the win. Besides you have your facts wrong, it was not covered by Elvis, it was written by Elvis and Dave Edmunds recorded it first.
