When the new wave (old wave?) stuff began to hit the airwaves in the States in the late 70s, the radio played two of Dave Edmunds songs - Girls Talk, which for some unknown reason the radio jocks attributed to Graham Parker, and Crawling From the Wreckage which was credited to Edmunds - but written by Parker. I found it impossible to buy any of these records in the States which was very frustrating. I never got my hands on his stuff until after 1990 when it was all released on CD. Most of my family members over the years tolerate my taste in music, but I think I must be the only one that loves Crawling From The Wreckage. I just related to the angry pissed off tone - that and Edmunds and Costello. I saw Elvis on Saturday Night Live and hated him, but weeks later I started hearing the same songs on the radio and went out and bought his debut album. Actually my favorite Edmunds song is DEBORAH, with elements of "I Fought The Law" in the chords. And my favorite Costello song is MYSTERY DANCE, 95 seconds of honest to god rock and roll. It also is kinda like Jailhouse Rock. But faster. Those late 70s punkers really lit me up. They were the antithesis of so-called, retro-named "yacht rock". Yet. I am a huge Steely Dan fan, was then, am now, have seen them live four times. Maybe some of the stuff Elvis and Dave were doing was a "take that Donald Fagen and your studio perfection!!" Or not. I love them all.

I saw Dave Edmunds at the 101 Club, London, back in the mid-80's. This band is very close to who he had then: he definitely had the same guitarist, I remember her was small, bald, and played a very old, butterscotch Telecaster. For the encore Jimmy Vaughan and Kim Wilson from the Fabulous Thunderbirds joined Dave and the boys for an extended Chuck Berry song, Promised Land (the Tbirds had played the 101 club the night before). I will never forget when the song had ended after about 15 minutes, the bald guitarist was shaking his left hand while smiling and looking at Jimmy Vaughan as if, "whew, that was tough!", good naturedly, and Jimmy Vaughan just have him a withering look, like "you punk..." I'll never forget it. I came away thinking that Jimmy Vaughan was a bit of a dickhead.

Got the word up on everyone's lipstick That you're getting faded You may not be an old-fashioned girl But you're gonna get dated "Was it really murder?" "Were you just pretending?" "Lately I've heard..." "You are the living end" Girls talk And they want to know how girls talk And they say it's not allowed, girls talk And they think they know how girls talk If they say that it's so Don't they think that I'd now by now?
