The producer of Elvis Costello's first 5 albums was Nick Lowe... of Rockpile. I saw Rockpile warmup band for Van Morrison in 1977. You should take a deep dive into Dave Edmunds albums and Nick Lowe's too the early albums were Rockpile more or less. Notice the drummer was from Dire Straits and the lead guitarist was from Lulu and Fatso

The guy at Dave’s left is the great Nick Lowe. He had a monster 1978 hit with “Cruel To Be Kind.” Dave Edmunds would go on to work with ELO’s Jeff Lynne in the early 1980s. Dave also initiated the Jeff Lynne-George Harrison introduction for the Cloud Nine album, and… well… the rest is musical history.

My favorite late 70's group, Rockpile. Girls Talk was a minor hit for Dave here in the US, off his album "Repeat When Necessary". What was great about Rockpile is that the fronted Dave Edmund's solo albums (Tracks on Wax 4, Repeat When Necessary and Twangin'...) as well as Nick Lowe's Labour Of Lust (out at the same time as Repeat). And of course, the Rockpile album itself. Fantastic musicians, all. Terry Williams went on to drum for Dire Straits and Billy Bremner added his guitar work heard on The Pretenders "My City Was Gone" and "Back on the Chain Gang". His was the lead guitar on those tunes. Pub rockers supreme, Rockpile.

Nick Lowe, co-leader of Rockpile is worth a dive. Great songwriter with a love of wordplay. I love the sound of breaking Glass, Cruel to be kind, Marie Provest, Half a man and half a boy, All men are liars (is it the first rick roll?) and I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll. Dave Edmunds was more a producer and cover artists in the rockabilly/rock n roll songbook but you still have Queen of Hearts, A1 On the Jukebox as stand outs.

You may remember " Teacher , Teacher." It was used in the movie " Bad Teacher " with Cameron Diaz. " I Knew The Bride ( when she used to rock and roll)" Though they only put out 1 proper Rockpile record, the same guys made 3 Dave Edmunds and 1 Nick Lowe record. They were also the backing band for, Johnny Cash' stepdaughter and Nick Lowes wife, Carlene Carters 1980 album.
