This is probably the most underrated, misunderstood and overlooked film in the careers of both director William Friedkin and Al Pacino. Over the years I've seen several friends/associates who I introduced it to either beg off due to the male eroticism or lapse into sheer ridicule- too bad, it's a shame. One of the best and most unique detective thrillers of the era, and all the great supporting roles by great NYC based character actors- Joe Spinell, Paul Sorvino, Randy Jorgensen... I could go on and on lol. Anyway sincere thanks for the upload

An actors job is to step into any social range in any era or generation - and be convincing. Not many pull it off. Pacino floats to the top while the other sink to the bottom. - Why? He's an actor!

THE TRUE NAME OF THIS MOVIE IS 'CRUSING'. THIS REALLY IS A GREAT MOVIE. BUT IT WAS MADE TO EARLY. IT DID GOOD BUSINESS IN THE 80'S. IT WOULD HAVE DONE HUGE BUSINESS TODAY. THIS IS S+M SCARY STUFF, NOT A REGULAR GAY CLUB, BIG DIFFERENCE. GREAT MOVIE DONE BY A GREAT DIRECTOR WHO DID ANOTHER SUPERB MOVIE, THE 'EXORCIST'.

  • @electrum310

I found the film disturbing because the identity of the murderer remains unclear. I watched the film twice to pay more attention to details. Al Pacino's chin and the murderer's chin are very different. In my opinion, the murderer is thus not Al Pacino. It is neither the tall guy who lays on the hospital bedroom. On one hand Al Pacino sings "who is there, I am here, you are here" so he could be the murderer. On the other hand the fingerprint of the tall guy was found on a crime place says the police officer. However, the police officer may lie to obtain a confession I believe. OK, I exclude the tall guy from being the murderer. Now there are two possibilities. Either Al Pacino is the murderer - Friedkin doesn't expect us to be careful to the actor's chin -, or the latter remains uncaught. What is your opinion ? How do you understand the story ?

@@t.wilson9432 Hello, I wonder whether Friedkin wants to give as a take home message that the police is violent, homophobe and incompetent. First, the autopsy of the severed arm, the doctor says that the police is just able to close a case when there is a murderer's confession. Second, the tall black guy who strikes both Al Pacino and the young waiter, the latter is humiliated and psychologically destroyed by the policemen. Third, the two policemen that harass gays while being homosexual themselves. Fourth the murderer identity is confusing all film long, the police does not make it to catch the murderer. The chief officer believes the young gay lying on the hospital bed is the killer but we are not convinced, he is just a poor guy who struggles with the ghost of his father. At the end, Al Pacino is promoted while the murderer still runs. Police is a mess, that's the film message I guess.

The original title of the movie is Cruising. This movie was D.O.A. upon release, very few theaters were willing to show it. 1980 or1981?

Aal pacino should've got Oscar nominates. I can remember this movie got slated and the performance and direction but I thought it was amazing. Loved the scene in the club when William, friedkin actually filmed the real life gay sex scenes and fisting and piss scene...by the way this movie is called Cruising. Still struggling to get the uncut version
