I love visiting churches if the are open, although I'm not religious, I do find churches, my favourite local church is the lovely Fotheringhay church with its Tudor Heraldry, another favourite is in Walsingham, also can't remember where it is, but in Norfolk there's a church that was bombed during the war and the roof destroyed, and left it open air, during the summer used to have services in the grassed over naive.

I don’t like coming down Terrace Hill, it’s like dropping off the edge of the world! I rode up it a couple of weeks ago, I think I averaged 2.8 mph. My Garmin actually paused at one point because it thought I had stopped, but I managed to ride all the way up. That was a lovely ride on roads that are very familiar to me.

Thankyou Roy that was very interesting! The brass music put a tear in my eye, but Wendy's singing made me laugh! The pair of you should be very proud because you provide us viewers with a great chance to see real committed cyclists in action! The churches were fantastic! They reminded me that once I was an alter boy and when the priest was turned the other was I'd nick a swig of holy wine haha and I was also a bell ringer! That feels like a long time ago!

Thanks Roger. I’m sure the priest was also having a crafty swig, so I doubt it will count against you when you’re knocking on those pearly gates 😀 I’m pleased you enjoyed the churches, there is some amazing architecture and, as Wendy said, they vary so much in design. My reference to the ‘Sally’ part of the bell rope was because my wife is Sally. I wasn’t sure about using the brass music so I’m happy you enjoyed it. Editing these videos takes a lot of time so your comment makes it all worthwhile.

That was a fascinating ride. Thank you and Wendy for the video. In Norfolk, Virginia USA there is an old church from the Revolutionary War that still has a cannonball lodged in one of the exterior walls. I have never been inside the church though, but I believe it's still a working church. At that last church the two of you visited Wendy neglected to mention whether Peter had already been there. 😊 It's nice that the area churches hold this event for people and even provide refreshments. Wendy, I sometimes sing when I ride too. Of course no one hears me but the squirrels! And they're always running away. 😂 (We have smart squirrels.)

Peter was home having a cup of tea by the time we were half way through I would imagine - whilst I was making sure the refreshments were thoroughly enjoyed! Guess the squirrels know better than to be about when I sing!! 😂

very nice, Roy and Wendy.... I suspect that the spire vs tower thing was a matter of munny.... brings to mind The Spire by William Golding, an interesting novel. this was all very nostalgic for me, the sights and sounds and shapes and colours, the very Englishness of it all. had a bit of a shufti, and it seems the Ride and Stride thing is nationwide. and "Nowhere else in the world are there so many magnificent churches in so small an area" as Lincolnshire. thank you both.....

As it happens, I later found out that all church towers once had a spire but as they were often made of wood, they rotted and weren’t replaced. The more expensive stones one did remain - so as you say, a matter of money. The only remaining wooden spire I know of is Chesterfield, and that got all bitter and twisted. www.atlasobscura.com/places/chesterfields-crooked-spire

That was very enjoyable, I love English churches, all different and often dating back 1000 years. I've wondered if they were designed by known architects who specialised in ecclesiastical buildings or it was just a local person. I was taken aback by your weather until I realised it was in August. It's tamping down outside so sunshine, even on a video , is very welcome. Thanks for the ride and please tell Wendy to keep up with the singing lessons, I could just make out the tune.😃

Unusual, but interesting subject matter for this ride. I'm not a religious person, but like visiting churches, mainly on holidays etc. Nice to see the variation in architecture tbh. Highlights for me were, seeing that Roy could give Tom Pidcock a run for his money descending , and Wendy should represent GB in the next Eurovision song contest, after that tribute to Humperdinck 😅

I’ve used a few of their tracks. They add a quirky edge not usually heard in cycling videos. Most seem to use that electronic wallpaper instead of real music 😀 I take a long time over choosing music as I want it to add something rather than being a gap filler. As you can imagine, I know immediately I hear the perfect one. You live in a truly beautiful part of the USA. I had a wonderful time wandering Washington State many years ago. The Columbia river gorge, Mt Rainier national park, the Cascade Mountains were all highlights.

Suspect the spires question answer is money or not strong enough or collapsed or removed as unsafe. Lincoln Cathedral had spires at one time and reasons why it doesn't now is qiite well documented but basicly to help stop the building falling down.

Spot on about the money, Keith. Apparently they all had spires atop the towers but the wooden ones rotted and weren’t replaced.
