Liu Bei's early career was so intertwined with Cao Cao's . when they were rather small warlords in Central China, the two often collaborated and betrayed each other. It was when Cao Cao emerged as the dominant power in Central and Northern China that Liu Bei had to flee southward and spent long years before finally settling in Shu region, or what's now Sichuan province.

Despite their accomplishments, none of the 3 main warlords (Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Quan) were able to unify the land. It was ultimately the Sima family (namely, Sima Yi, his sons, Sima Shi and Sima Zhao, and Sima Yan) who created the Jin kingdom and conquered Sun Hao's Eastern Wu in 280, finally unifying China after nearly 100 years.

some of those events told as historical were actually just made up and part of the "romance of the three kingdom" *novel*, as opposed to the "records of the three kingdoms" which were historical in nature. Stories like Zhang Fei's roar and Guan Yu breaking through the five passes and slaying six generals, or the oath in the peach garden, all of these are fictional events from the novel, same with Hua Tuo scraping poison off the bone of Guan Yu while he's playing weiqi.

Cao Wei conquered Shu Han in 263, officially ending the last Han dynasty remnant. The Sima clan then deposed the ruling Wei emperor and proclaimed the Jin dynasty in 266. Finally, Jin conquered Eastern Wu in 280, ending the Three Kingdoms period.

Basically as another reply mentioned, Shu, Wei and Wu never managed to unite China and instead a 4th unrelated Kingdom called Jin created by the Sima family usurping Wei (after Wei defeated Shu few decades ago), by then Wu was already weak due to having an idiot tyrant as an emperor. So Sima Yim defeated Wu and united China as Jin Dynasty which lasted a few hundred years until it gone FUBAR again for another 100 years until Tang Dynasty unite China properly in 600AD
