Correction, Marcellus wasn’t Marcus Antonius’s son, he was Octavia’s son from her first marriage to Gaius Claudius Marcellus. She had 3 children by her first marriage, and 2 more daughters with Mark Antony, and inherited Antony’s son Iullus from a previous marriage, and also became foster mother to all three of Antony’s children by Cleopatra.

@@chasbarnes3425 Cleopatra did try to get Caesarian out of Rome, but when Octavius promised the Alexandrians that he did not hold them responsible for the actions of Antony & Cleopatra, her son was tricked into coming back. Then Octavius had him executed along with his step-brother, Antony’s 17-year old son, Antyllus…. according to the sources.

Well, I would not praise the research quite that much. No serious researcher would claim the obvious falsehood that Marcellus was Mark Antony's son (4:35). In fact, Marcellus was born from her mother's (Octavia's) first marriage to Gaius Claudius Marcellus - a prominent politician and consul for the 50 BC year. (Hence the name!)

Watch the 70s PBS series, "I, Claudius"....Brian Blessed was magnificent as Augustus. There's one scene in which Augustus is faced with a whole line of her hookups, and ends up shouting, "is there anyone in Rome who has not slept with my daughter?" He locks her up and winds up exiling her for a time.

My dad told me about it in high school & I accidentally binge watched it before we had Wi-Fi. My poor dad spent $60 dollars on that bill, but he Wi-Fi after & this year (at least a decade later) he surprised me with it on dvd for my birthday I think it’s so funny how each dvd starts with something that formally says “this is so old that some flaws can’t be fixed. We tried our best. Sorry My dad said, “this was meant to be viewed on a tiny screen, (sometimes) in black & white, from several feet away. It wasn’t meant to be seen in this high resolution!” I think it adds charms & it’s still great

@@witchypoo7353 I remember my dad watching it when I was a kid in the 70s. I watched some of it too but didn't really understand what it was about. Now I know the history quite well. It's probably well worth revisiting despite the low resolution.

@@redplanet7163 oh I highly recommend it. It feels almost like watching a play in terms of the sets & acting. So expect some over the top things & props that are clearly not real, for example their knives. Having that expectation I think will help you get more enjoyment out of the experience

Let’s not forget to mention that Augustus made Livia’s first husband divorce her- when she was visibly pregnant with her second child- to marry her himself. Was Augustus the unborn child‘s father or her 1st husband? We‘ll never know.. but a worthy man to condemn his own daughter for adultery!

@@jamiemohan2049 Tiberius was the older son and definitely a son of Livia‘s first husband. He also had to marry Augustus‘ daughter Julia. Drusus was the younger son who might have been fathered by Augustus since he took her into his house even before she was divorced.

Livia probably initiated the first conversation. Also Octavian signed the proscriptions, so adultery is low on the list. Proscriptions=Genocidal war crime that would be worse than the holocaust if it happened today

Julia probably slept with many men having his dad s age. That was not the real problem. The problem was that she was too spoiled to understand the precariousness of her position. If she would have undestood that, she would have been very discrete in her affairs. Also Agrippa was a man that gain his position on his own merit, he fought wars and won, he was an intelligent man, a brilliant manager, to make him a crabby personality just to find an excuse for a brat to sleep around, is just unfair. Cause maybe he was crabby because she was annoying like hell. We can assume that too

So Attia (Augustus’ mother) was previously exiled to the same island as Julia? She is a main character in the HBO series Rome. Her story line is completely made up but she’s fantastic in the story. Agrippina (Nero’s mother) was like Attia but truly evil. Why was Attia exiled?

It’s difficult not to sympathise with Julia though, although Augustus loved her, she was a political pawn from an early age and married many times which all failed. It seems as though Julia felt used and caged through the multiple marriages she had to endure, and thus rebelled. After all that, she received little sympathy from her father and was exiled - it was no less than a lifetime imprisonment in a desolate island where she rotted within a tragic marriage with Tiberius, where she was probably tortured by him until she died alone. It’s pitiful to think about. What I can’t understand is if Octavian ever forgave her before his death?

@@Alix-yu8rq I never understood that, especially since by that point even the Roman people appealed for Octavian to revert his decision and allow Julia to return to Rome - even his people considered the punishment of exile to be too harsh. So how come he was so insistent? At first I thought he punished her severely for the betterment of his people, but now I can’t understand why he never forgave her/ allowed her into his life. What was it that Julia had done that caused him to punish her to this extent?
