"One step at a time. One punch at a time. One round at a time." Fun Fact: Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed and is still alive (when this movie was made), gave his strong endorsement to the movie and Michael B. Jordan's performance. Jordan felt extremely honored. American Flag Fact: Sylvester Stallone requested that Michael B. Jordan wears the famous American flag trunks that Apollo Creed wore in Rocky (1976) and Rocky wore in Rocky III (1982) and Rocky IV (1985) to keep tradition in the "Rocky" universe. RIP Sage Fact: Just as the film was entering pre-production, Sylvester Stallone's oldest son Sage Stallone died of a heart attack. Stallone has admitted that the loss almost sent him into a full breakdown, but Ryan Coogler was eventually able to convince him to use the film as a dedication to Sage, focusing specifically on the father-son relationships that appear in it. Although initially resistant, Stallone said at the Golden Globes that Creed (2015) helped him cope with Sage's death.

@@mcgilj1 Stallone offered the Rocky Jr. part to Sage for "Rocky Balboa" and he turned it down flat, telling Sly "no more Rocky for me." @BigGator5, Sage Stallone died in 2012. Stallone was still turning this movie down at that point because he was done with Rocky. Had nothing to do with Sage. "Creed" didn't enter actual pre-production until early 2015 when MGM finally told Sly, "You play Rocky in this movie or we'll recast the part." Sly said something like "Well, if anybody's gonna fuck up my character, it's gonna be me." And Stallone said no such thing at the Golden Globes. I taped his win that night (and just watched it again) and he says nothing of the sort when he won the Globe.

@@ConstantineFurman didn't know Sage was approached but.. That makes sense. But I am just saying that the character was already recast in the previous entry so it wouldn't be that jarring if he had shown up in "Creed". But as pointed out in the review, they kind of need to make that story point to bring Adonis into Rocky's world.. Although this is a bit retreading of the "Punchy" storyline in Balboa.. Giving Rocky a family something to fight for again. To be fair.. each entry thus far in the "Creed'" universe has been a mix and match of ideas and themes from the original films.

Ryan Coogler grew up watching Rocky movies with his father. So, when he started making movies, he wrote Creed as a love letter to the originals, as well as a tie to his own father who is no longer with us. After he wrote and directed Creed, he went on to write and direct a small movie called Black Panther. I think it did alright, grossing over $1Billion.

My take on the movie is this (essay ahead): I love how it was clearly a nod to pretty much every movie in the series (even 5), but it did its own thing and made things fresh. In a way, Adonis’ story paralells Rocky’s. Rocky came from nothing and had to prove he was worthy of the chance Apollo gave him. Adonis, once he was taken in by Mary Anne, had seemingly all the advantages but he had to prove he truly deserved them. As for the brief falling out between Adonis and Rocky, I feel like that was all a big gray area. Neither of them were wrong in that situation, but they were both looking at it without the full context. Rocky wouldn’t have known about Adonis’ abandonment issues to know how hurtful his comment was. He was just trying to detach Adonis to make his condition easier for both of them to deal with. On the other hand, Adonis wouldn’t have known where Rocky was coming from in his decisions either. Rocky by this point had lost pretty much everybody in his life and he was ready to be reunited with them, and he also remembered watching everything Adrian went through with treatment only for it to be unsuccessful. Adonis didn’t have that context though, and he just saw it as another person he cared about abandoning him. It’s a reminder that you never know what a person is going through. This movie also makes Mickey’s speech in Rocky 5 come true: Rocky has lost everything by this point, but Adonis came along and gave him reason to continue on. I like to think it was Adrian helping him from beyond, pushing him to keep living. I feel like she would have welcomed Adonis. As for Rocky becoming a trainer again, I feel like this time he was in a better place to do it. In Rocky 5, he was living vicariously through Tommy because he couldn’t accept his career ending before he was ready on his terms. By the Creed series, he knew and accepted his time in the spotlight was over and he could then focus solely on passing along his knowledge and experience. In a way it brings his story full circle, with him taking on Mickey’s role. As for Rocky’s relationship with his son, I feel like it wasn’t so much a falling out as it was just them drifting apart (again). Rocky knew his son needed to do his own thing and get himself out from his father’s shadow, and Rocky accepted that as hard as it is. I don’t doubt their love for each other as father and son, but they’re so different that there wasn’t much holding them together, especially without Adrian there. There’s also a real-life reason they went this route again: Stallone’s son Sage passed away just a few years before, and it would have been too painful for him if Rocky’s son was in the movie.

"You know how many times I had to carry your father up these stairs because he couldn't walk?" Yes, Mary Anne. I do. It was twice. Ryan Coogler apparently couldn't be bothered to pay attention that "Rocky" told us Apollo Creed has never been defeated, never gone the distance with another fighter (I think they say the furthest he'd ever gone was ten rounds), and had never even been knocked down before. So yeah, it was twice. Additionally, Ryan Coogler did not need to make Apollo a philanderer. This same damn movie could've been made about Apollo's actual son we see in "Rocky II" (Apollo's real children will not even be acknowledged until "Creed III"). There's a reason Stallone kept turning this film down and basically had to be blackmailed into doing it. And Burt Young was pissed off that they killed Paulie. He didn't take it the way Talia did for "Rocky Balboa." I think he was mostly angry that it wasn't Sly himself that killed the character, but just some guy busting his way uninvited into their sandbox. "Rocky V" is absolutely canon. In "Balboa," why is Rocky poor again? Cause he lost his money in "V." In "Balboa," Rocky makes reference to "home team," which was introduced in "V" as his code word for "male bonding." And the Adrian's restaurant (opened in 1995 when Adrian was still alive) is probably a reference to Rocky's raving about Adrian's cooking in "V." Also, one of the stories Rocky is telling at the beginning of "Balboa" MAY be him talking about the street fight with Tommy Gunn. "Rocky V" is the darkest chapter of Rocky's life so there is no reason why Rocky would want to talk about it and bring it up again. Fans think this sort of thing is "continuity" when the real description for it is "fan service." However, "Creed II" also has Rocky making an explicit reference to "V."

Thanks for commenting! I assumed that just because Apollo was undefeated except those times we know of, doesn’t mean he didn’t get beat up enough to be bedridden. Especially after adrenaline wears off, but I could be wrong. I’m not a longtime fan, very new, and clearly we disagree, but I really appreciate your taking the time to write this well thought out and still polite comment. A lot of people can’t seem to criticize something without being rude 💜

So excited you're watching Creed! Sylvester Stallone wrote all of his lines in Creed, so they would sound more like Rocky and then he co-wrote the entire screenplay for Creed 2. They both did great and you can see all the Rocky flavor in them. However Sylvester Stallone was barred by the producers from being in Creed 3, and it tanked because it looked totally fake and there was no heart. Skip that one, it adds NOTHING to the legacy of Rocky. Or Creed, really.

@@RhetoricalThrill Right? It has everything to do with the evil producer Irwin Winkler, who conned Sly out of the rights to Rocky back in 76. He only allows Sly to make Rocky films and appear as Rocky when he wants to, which is so horrible. Sly even offered to direct if they didn't want him in it, and he said no. Michael B Jordan is still Sly's friend, since it's not up to him.

Stallone actually has this thing where when he was playing Rocky, he would have the other actor/fighter hit him for real to make it look as real as possible. He told Michael B. Jordan about this and that it should be a part of his "initiation" into the Rocky/Creed franchise. The man that played "Pretty" Ricky was a legit former world champion boxer. In fact, I think all of the fighters that Creed fought (even in sparring) are legit fighters. "Pretty" Ricky was played by Tony Bellew if you want to look him up, but he hit Jordan for real (maybe only 80% power) puch and knocked him out cold. I'm pretty sure the punch that you see Creed take that knocked him down before his eye swelled up was the punch that knocked him out. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z2mczqiNecS5dpM.html

Do you feel Apollo’s affair tarnishes his legacy as a character? Obviously the thought of such a well-respected character doing something like cheating on his wife is upsetting, but imo it also shows Apollo was human with his own mistakes and flaws. Mary Anne is a saint to take Adonis in though. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for her, losing him like she did and finding out he was actually cheating on her and had a child with someone else.

Nah, I don't think it affects Apollo as a character. It humanizes him, and I'm not excusing it at all, but we don't know anything about that time, and the ones who were most affected were Mary Anne and Donnie, and they forgive him. She is definitely a saint!

While we never know the sex of Apollo's biological children, we do know he had at least two children with his wife. Why did they not use one of his biological children for the Creed films has been asked by many. Also, fans weren't crazy about Apollo having an affair. The lead actress, Tessa Thompson is probably best known from two "Thor" films and the "Westworld" TV series. Nice reactions to your first Creed film!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏 I'm not crazy about the third film, but "Creed II" is good!😉

I agree, I think it adds necessary conflict and struggle to the whole thing. @@RhetoricalThrill Exactly. People are complex, and not every choice is indicative of someone's character. There are charismatic, introspective & authentic people everywhere with pockets full of regret. Shit happens sometimes Also,. It's not talked about,. but the reason Mickey felt like a father to Rocky, is Rocky was abandoned by his own dad. He connected with Adonis, because he understands what it's like to grow up like that. That connection isn't possible to the same extent with Mary Ann's kids.

great reaction as usual :) the girl played Valkire in the MCU that probably where u know her from about Rocky not going into training as U SAID ;) , he was burn HARD in Rocky 5 and probably why he didnt went that way about the movie i personally have BIG issue with this movie, i liked most of it ALOT but i strongly disagrea with the ending Creed should had lost by full decision, he fought a much better and experience boxer who unlike Rocky 1 actually trained and took the fight seriously i think that by going with split decision they copyed Rocky 1 too much and the end line -> " u the future.." was way too much IMO having Creed staying the distance but loosing by full decision and toning down the remark to something like " u belong in the ring" or "u did good" ... would make the movie both better and more its own thing rather then a copy of Rocky 1 btw if u interested in boxing there an old reality show Stalone did with Suger Ray (a legendary boxer) called "The Contender" where they orgenize a boxing tournament for upcoming young boxers and follow and train those boxers. and as usuasl by me i STRONGLY !!!!!! recommend u watch Cobra Kai , and the movie " Warrior" imo Warrior is kind of spiritual sequal to Rocky , different story /chars/ fighting style but it mix between fight + training + human drama is GREAT

Ricky didn't take the fight seriously at all, plus Adonis was much younger than Rocky in the first fight, so he had youth on his side too. He also had a trainer who had already won the title and Apollo's talent - two things Rocky didn't have. I don't think it was that unrealistic.
