i think because Rocky 3 was bit more popular and eye probably more liked . Heart wasnt judged by its own but by comparison . same reason IMO the 1st movie song also not as knowen as hearts btw ou the best around (Karate Kid song) was initially destined for Rocky but at the last moment they gone with another song , dont rem if it was for 1 or 2

There's a great video on KZread looking back at how Rocky ended the cold war with this match. When Duke is yelling at Rocky saying that Drago's not a machine but a man, Drago's saying pretty much the opposite to his corner team: "He's not human. He's like iron." When his trainer/handler goes down to berate him and yells at him to win, Drago picks him up and throws him aside saying "I fight to win! For me! For me!!".
@MGower4465

No, that was a Politburo flunky that goes, or more accurately, is sent down to scream at Drago. He first berates Drago's trainer. This is why Drago's wife looks distraught, she knows by putting hands on a Politburo member Drago just fell off the favorite son list of The Party so fast he made a sonic boom on the way down.

Whatever you do, do not listen to anyone who says that any of the Rocky films are crap. Sure, some of them might be better than others, and everyone has their own preferences, but all of the Rocky films are awesome, and worth watching. Some people might tell you that Rocky 5 sucks, but it doesn't, and you should check it out if you want to finish off the series. Rocky 5 is really good, and Rocky 6 from 2006 is one of the best. Every Rocky film adds a critical part to the overarching narrative of a fighters life in andd out of the ring. Rocky 5, and Rocky 6 are cool because they change up the dynamic of the story. Instead of Rocky fighting another unstoppable opponent, it's more about his decline after boxing, and being able to find himself as far as his identity without being a part of the sport he loves as a fighter. The opponent in Rocky 5, and 6 is Rocky fighting against the hardships of life. The next two films kind of show what Apollo was talking about with how fighters have a warrior spirit that cannot be turned on and off like a switch to the point where fighting gives them meaning in their lives, but the spotlight, and the money doesn't last forever. A lot of fighters can go through rough times after their fighting career is finished, plus they can have dabilitating health issues that result from a fighting career. The Rocky films show the full progression of a fighters life, especially back in the 70's, and 80's. It's also such a great love story.

The two moments in the fight with Drago speaking were supposed to be subtitled, but for some reason the streaming didn't include it After Duke tells Rocky "You see? As a man - the montage that you didn't understand makes perfect sense. We spend most of our lives pretending that we are in control an never allow or emotions to overwhelm us. So when that point comes that you can't hold it back comes - all the emotions that we bottle up over the years come back to the surface, that is what Rocky was feeling - this speaks tomen. You see the surface emotion, the need for revenge, but it is really something far deeper. All of that bottled emotion needed to be spent, he was letting it well up so it could drive him to push to places he had never been to before. For us it is less about the revenge, that is really just the trigger and the outlet. The first three movies we much more balanced for men and women, this one was almost all for the men. Rocky is such a deep character - he is interesting because he holds a mirror up to us. Men aren't deep, we are driven by the moment with only the simplest understanding of our emotional selves. We are all like rocky, we are simple minded with our emotions, often not understanding them ourselves until something forces them up to the surface.

Yeah... I believe it's kind of biological, and it's normal. Women seek more protection, security (more maternal instinct)... Men want to defend themselves and the honor of those in their group, and look for tricks to do so. Even when reacting to fights, women tend to see it as something "super violent" and turn their faces away so as not to see it, men are already used to it, I believe a little because of their hunting ancestors. Of course, this is not a generalization (we have several women who fight, for example, or more sensitive men), but +85% react this way.

The robot. The reason for the robot is that Stallone's oldest son (the baby in Rocky 2) was diagnosed as autistic. Stallone read an interview with the inventor of the robot where he said that he felt that in certain situations an autistic child may be able to learn more effectively from a robot than with a human teacher, so Stallone who was going through a divorce at the time (while dating the actress that played Ivan Drago's wife) had his children with him on set. "I must break you." One of the biggest complaints I hear about this movie, is that Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) is out of character. I disagree. Apollo has always been an extremely pro-American competitor and challenging a Soviet boxer would be a matter of pride for him. So of course he would challenge Ivan Drago. There are a lot of problems with this movie, and the next one is worse, but Apollo Creed's character isn't one of them. Carl Weathers gives 110% too. Speaking of which... Fun Fact: In order to sell Drago's (Dolph Lundgren) killing blow to Apollo, Carl Weathers made it a point to land face first and feign a twitching motion after hitting the ground. He was so convincing that the on-set physician feared he had actually been injured. Location Location Fact: The training scenes set in Russia were actually filmed in Wyoming. The farm is located in Jackson Hole, and most of the exterior shots were filmed in the Grand Teton National Park. The fight itself was shot at the PNE Agrodome in Vancouver, British Columbia. Rock Solid Fact: After realizing how Rocky's previous opponents (Apollo Creed and Clubber Lang) had loud and animated personalities, Dolph Lundgren came up with the idea of making his character, Ivan Drago, very stoic, not move too much and just be an intimidating presence. Sylvester Stallone incorporated these ideas by not giving the character too much dialogue and making big close ups, especially in the eyes. This wasn't done because English wasn't Dolph Lundgren's first language.

There was alot driving Rocky in this one. Guilt because he didn't throw in that towel when he wanted to. But he was conflicted trying to do what Apollo wanted. I don't know why translation text is not available in some versions. You know when Drago sat in his corner, at 26.11 in your reaction, and said something, and you said "I think that's the most words you said the whole movie"? Important words that were left out of the version you watched. What he said, and I got this from other versions that DID show the translation text, was "He's not human; he's like a piece of iron."

Maybe this relates to the lack of soul-searching you pointed out, but one departure from the previous films that I didn't like was, in this one Adrian just comes along for the ride. In the first one, as hard as Rocky was training, he didn't have the confidence he needed until Adrian told him to try his best, even if he thought he would lose. In the second film, when she tells him to "Win," he goes from barely training to working like a man possessed. In the third, it's Adrian's beachside confrontation of Rocky that gets him to admit his fear and take his training with Apollo seriously. In short, nothing Rocky did went ahead without Adrian's say-so. But in this one, he's working hard the whole way, and Adrian shows up to take on a supporting role, rather than driving the story forward.

This movie, like so many from 1983 to about 1987 or so, was very heavily influenced by the rise of MTV and music videos (leading to more pop/rock music soundtracks than scores, more nonsensical montages, faster editing cuts, and more flash and style and over-the-top visuals and dance numbers than slow/complex/deep emotional storytelling (in other words, it is very much a product of its time and what was being seen as necessary elements to include to draw in the dollars of the younger audience of that era). Some hate that and some enjoy the kitsch and nostalgia of all of that.

Please...Stallone is not Woody Allen, and until recently, had no apparent DESIRE to be. His films are rarely emotionally or morally complex. He doesn't have any penchant for playing or writing characters who sit around wringing their hands over life....The other Rocky movies were a bit more dialogue-driven, but part of that has to do with the fact that this is the 4th film in a series...the main characters are already established and known to the audience. Nobody behaves in anything but the manner the audience would expect...Rocky, Adrian, Paulie, and ESPECIALLY Apollo...ALL behave just as we'd anticipate under the circumstances. If MTV was an influence, I'd say it was a GOOD one...Rocky 4 is just about perfect...one of the greatest movies ever made. My only complaint would be that Stallone should have left Adrian's two deleted scenes in the movie...ESPECIALLY the second one. He seems to have a disturbing habit of removing OTHER people's strongest scenes, like he did with Burt Young in Rocky Balboa....

A fighter’s spirit is so hard to understand. His spirit will never add up, the “math” doesn’t make sense. A fighter always has to believe in themselves and a trainer can’t believe that they’re ever going to lose, even if they’re outgunned. It goes beyond pride, it goes beyond the title and that’s why it was an unsanctioned fight in Russia by their rules. It was the principal of the thing. Keep in mind this was during the Cold War era and there’s a little bit of the eastern block vs. the west. Rocky decided he was pot committed and that the only way he’d beat the man if he was willing to die, but the man that could beat him had to be willing to die as well. He went to the most extremes in terms of cold, primitive training, etc. He didn’t need anything fancy, he needed to find his true drive and go back to what he came from and get his mind right.

This is the most successful Rocky movie and the most remembered movie without this movie there are no Creed movies. I love the Montage in this movie Hearts On Fire, Fun facts: During the filming of this movie Stallone asked Dolph to really spar with him. Stallone ended up in the hospital cause Dolph punch him so hard he moved his heart . Another fun fact Brigitte Nielsen the actress who plays Drago wife was the real life girlfriend of Stallone during the time of the filming. :) . You should see Dolph Languren movies like The Punisher 1989, Universal Solider, Showdown In Little Tokyo , I Come In Peace. It is not just the desire for revenge that motivate Rockey in this movie. It is the guilt that Rockey is feeling for not dropping the towel and stopping the fight before Apollo died.

Was also surprised you had no comment when he said something like, "He's not human, he's like a piece of iron" about Rocky.

Not super relevant that you can't pick up without context.. But basically the bad guy is pissed they are cheering for Rocky.. And he says "I fight for me.. FOR ME". ALWAYS drove me insane the original DVD had no subtitles for Drago until they released the Blu Ray.

@@RhetoricalThrill You have nothing to worry about. Remember, this isn't about boxing, it's about Rocky and Adrian.
This movie, which I saw in theaters, brought me into the franchise, and it remains my favorite. Nothing ever inspired me to feel strong, and like I could do anything as much as this movie. Being kind of a Nation against Nation story also elevates it. The quality of this movie is just as good as any of the franchise, actually better, and I wouldn't change a thing. There is just something about eightys movies. This is rocky at his peak, and it deserves nothing less than buying it on DVD and enjoying it, which I did.
The two moments in the fight with Drago speaking were supposed to be subtitled, but for some reason the streaming didn't include it After Duke tells Rocky "You see? He's not a machine, he's a MAN" Drago is in his corner saying "He is not Human... he is like piece of iron!" Then later, the Russian trainer tells Drago "Listen to them. They're cheering for HIM, you idiot! WIN!!" Then Drago grabs him by the throat, then turns to the Premiere and shouts "I fight to win... for ME. FOR ME!!!"

In between takes the robot and its inventor would work with Stallone's son.

I can hear this exact dialogue in my head, with his inflictions. It's brilliant, I would highly recommend it to anyone who has a chance. Hope it can even give something to people who don't even understand German.
There was alot driving Rocky in this one. Guilt because he didn't throw in that towel when he wanted to. But he was conflicted trying to do what Apollo wanted. There's the nationalism: us vs them.. and just revenge in spite of everything he could lose. Plus there's the great theme. Rocky trains old school.. Hardcore.. Natural.. He represents the old school. Drago is science.. (and doping) and high tech which was good to see you got right away.

A boxer never surrender, he fight with all heart, mental and body till the end. It s crazy, but a fighter always go on.."no matter what"
Maybe this relates to the lack of soul-searching you pointed out, but one departure from the previous films that I didn't like was, in this one Adrian just comes along for the ride.

A montage in the form of a movie, the soundtrack is great, but that is what I remember from this movie. That and you get to see the start of Dolph Lundgren's career who would be He-Man by CAnnon as they were going bankrupt.

Since Spooky Season is coming up, I recommend watching Ernest Scared Stupid. It's a Halloween horror comedy classic. It stars one of my favorite actors, Jim Varney, and I watch it pretty much immediately as October starts. Also, it has a connection to another movie you reacted to: Killer Klowns from Outer Space. The effects for Ernest Scared Stupid were done by the Chiodo Brothers. The Chiodo Brothers were the guys who wrote, directed and produced Killer Klowns from Outer Space as well as doing the practical effects and makeup. I think it'd make for a great reaction.
If you wind up watching Cobra Kai at some point, remember these training scenes.

@@RhetoricalThrill the expression. I am going to put that one in my back pocket for use later. Gotta add that I appreciate your thoughtful reactions - how Rocky IV feels tacked on compared to the arc in 1 through 3. Or how the action feels rushed since we don’t see his process on the decision - all things that are obvious but I never really noticed. It was always it was fun, if not as good as the first 3 but never got beyond that.

You did great again! Stalone made a directors cut a few years ago that is really good! He removed most of the cheese and made it much more dramatic. It’s interesting as it’s the same movie but he uses a lot of different takes so it seems very fresh. I was hoping he’d remove the 80’s music and put back more of the classic Rocky music, but he didn’t. You should check it out sometime. Thanks again for a great reaction!

Agreed, the directors cut (while having its own issues) does fix a lot of issues from the theatrical release.

The 80's music is part of what makes the movie great. Without the 80's music, it wouldn't be the same thing. The music is iconic. It's just like how Rocky 3 has the Eye Of The Tiger. The normal Rocky music worked well for the first 2 films, but the 80's films are a different beast.

@@donavonhoward114 Agree to disagree on that. I don’t hate the music in 4, but I would hardly call it iconic. 3 had Eye of the tiger AND the classic Rocky music. I would never want the music removed from the theatrical release, but changing it for the directors cut would have made the two versions that much more different. I don’t know if I liked the directors cut more, but I appreciated that it was different. The documentary about the making of the directors cut was interesting too.
Also, you have to remember that this took place at the heart of the Cold War. There was a lot more than personal pride on the line.

15:02 the montage is most likely Rocky thinking about his life since he also doesnt know if he is gon a survive Drago too.
31:18 This is widely seen as the best Montage in the Rocky Series and also one of the best in Cinema, nothing in it is random not even the music it all matters and it's all there for a reason other than padding. That said, this movie is 29 minutes of Montages.

Drago is a perfect machine, nothing to say about an excellent character in the Rocky movie, Dragon's body, wow, Rocky is the best, but Dragon wow.
Apollo's ultimate downfall was that he had no montages. Rocky needed THREE just to beat Drago. First one while driving the Lambo to get his head right, then the initial training montage, and finally the supercharged +Adrian training montage. Apollo never had a chance.

Not sure if you had the subtitles pop up for Drago, during the final fight when they are saying he's not a machine he's a man! Drago is saying he isnt human he is like a piece of iron, i.e a machine so it switches,, then the gorbachev boys are saying later to Drago you better fight for your country, he turns and sais I dont fight for you! Rocky III is Stallone's fav sequel. As a lifelong fan on the series, I have my theories as to why. The Paulie opening moments is a Director directing. The second film is a Director finding his way. It's lit like a tv show... unremarkable. I think Sly wanted to play with light and shadow more. In III he got to do that. Think of cinema at the time. Taxi Driver? III is a great film by a great Director.
Should watch Rocky 5 real quick and finish up the original series! The fifth one isn't great, but it has some special scenes that contribute and finish out the story.

He sounds like a very interesting guy from what I’ve heard!
It's not only revenge, he's a fighter and has a charachter of one, it's kinda selfish to expect a person to change that or be able to delete that just because he has family, she knew who he was and took him as husband, he hasn't changed, circumstances did, and now just because of that she expects him to estinguish his fire for her, which isn't really fair on her part, also he feels partly guilty for not throwing in the towel and that's like retribution for the guilt he's feeling, because it helps him cope, that atleast he's doing something about it, if he didn't do nothing, he'd prob go mentally and emotionally insane, and he wouldn't be good for anybody like that anyways. Great movie tho

Rocky IV put Dolph Lundgren (Ivan Drago) on the map. He’s done a lot of B-grade action movies that Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger probably turned down. I am probably the only one on the planet that liked him as He-Man in ‘Masters of the Universe’. He has since worked with Sylvester Stallone (and Arnold Schwarzenegger) in all of the ‘Expendables’ films.

20:25 those are called "Dragon Flags". Popularized by the great Bruce Lee. You have to have a VERY strong core system (Abs, chest, shoulders and back) to do them. They're not regular leg lifts. You lift your back off the floor as well as your legs. To put it in perspective as a gym rat myself I can only do ONE and that's it. I tried 2 and felt like I was about to break something lol.

For the name Ivan, 'Ee-Vawn' is the russian pronounciation, 'Eye-Ven' is the americanized version of that name, so both are technically valid. Unless we'd ask Drago directly how he prefers it. And he actually gives us answer beside a death glare.
