What are some other movies that surprised you by being different from what you expected?
@pedroV2003
Жыл бұрын
I call them 'bargain' movies in that they end up giving way more than I expected. Two that come to mind are 'Marley and Me' which I thought was going to be another sentimental dog movie but ended up being a lot more about the dynamics of being married and raising a family. The other one that I liked a lot was 'The Way Way Back' which turned out to be a terrific coming of age movie with a stupendous performance by Steve Carrell. If you haven't seen them you should check them out. My $.02.

Road House is the perfect storm of 80s action movies. On paper, there’s no reason this movie should work (ludicrous plot, cardboard cutout characters, a lead that’s an odd mashup of Jean Claude Van Damme and Burt Reynolds, corny dialogue, etc), but it’s somehow enormously entertaining.

I think a big part of why it’s so entertaining is the excellent casting. Swayze and Elliott, in particular, were perfect. They have the specific kind of charisma that can pull something like this off.

I’m finding 80s movies are often like that. We see them young and love the action and the characters, then learn later there’s actually a lot to them.
jeff healy is a legendary blues guitarist. they used 2 mercedes 560sec for the film (because 1 of them was destroyed in the movie). patrick swayze bought the other and drove it as his primary vehicle for the rest of his life.

One detail seems everyone missed are Dalton cars. The Mercedes is his real personal car, his pride and joy well taken care off and garage kept away from any harm. When at work, he always drives a classic Buick Rivera. The theory is when he started working in a cooler gig, he buys a beat up Riviera and gradually repairing it to good condition, in the same time bar/club is gradually improving as well. By the time the the club improves and another job (challenge) appears he ditch the club (now in good order) and the restored Rivera and move to a new craphole club and bought another beater classic Riviera. Spoiler: Through the movie, Dalton always lecture about dont get personal with your job. The Riviera represent Dalton "just business" it gets vandalized by disgruntled patron just like Daltons body get injured in the fight and he shrugs it off. When the bad guys murdered Dalton's role model, Dalton went into a rampage with the Mercedes, this time it is personal.

Bill Murray and his brother love this movie. In fact, they have a script writer friend who in real life is married to the actress that plays the doctor that is Swayze's love interest in the movie, and they love to tease their friend about it. In fact, if either Murray brother is channel surfing and they see this movie on TV, doesn't matter what time or day or night, they will call their friend and in a creepy voice say, "Your wife is banging Patrick Swayze. I'm watching them. He's got up against the wall right now."

It's kind of like all the movies I've seen with some bully picking on a kid in school and the teacher telling them both to go to the principal's office. This movie really gets you going, doesn't it! I really like that you get a little upset when you should be getting upset, without doing what this one reactor I won't name does. No matter what happens in a movie, his response is, "Well, to be fair..." He drives me nuts. Enjoyed your reaction. By the way, the singer Jeff Healey, was an amazing musician and went through all kinds of physical hell that followed him throughout his life. He had eye cancer as a child and had to have his eyes removed. He taught himself how to play guitar on his lap. He formed a band, started playing in clubs with some other musicians, and was signed with a major label. He went on to release several CDs of music. He toured and also sat in with other well-known artists. Talk about accomplishing so much with such a handicap...amazing man. He eventually had sarcomas removed from his lungs, then his legs. He eventually died because of sarcoma, at 41. Kind of makes me feel guilty if I complain about ANYTHING, huh!

The guy that plays Morgan, the first guy that Dalton fires, because he doesn't have the right "temperament for the job" is played by professional wrestler Terry Funk. A legit badass in every sense of the word, but from what I hear is a really sweet guy unless you piss him off. If there was an actual bar fight with everyone in the cast, including the extras.
