This reaction was recorded several weeks ago, prior to the passing of Burt Young. I assume most of you are smart enough to realize this, but just in case: it is the character of Paulie that I do not like and will be making snarky comments about during this video. I have no negative feelings toward Mr. Young, may he rest in peace, and I wish comfort and strength to his loved ones 💜

understandable. this movie really didn't do that great of explaining why Paulie is still around...nor do i think it was smart to give Paulie financial responsibility. this admittedly is one the weaknesses of the movie. We GET what the movie is going for; a return to the roots. Around this time, stallone was becoming a joke. his movies were a clear distance away from the serious critically acclaimed roles he made in his early career and , while those movies like rocky 4, and the Rambo sequels are fun, they were declining returns. So stallone thought he could reunte with the OG director of rocky and regain that respect. It did not work, rocky v was the worst received film and grossed the least. It was clear-stallone was in a dud. Now this movie...isn't good. But it gets hated way too much. There are so many good moments. But also hurt by the bad stuff-poor music, terrible editing, a story tht is hard to accept even by rocky's standards. The best thing is that this movie was that failure stallone needed. Failure cna teach us so much more about what should happen .In 2006, stallone returned...

  • @terminallumbago6465
    @terminallumbago64658 ай бұрын

My take on the movie is this (essay ahead, be warned): Paulie didn’t screw Rocky out of his money, the accountant did. Why would ANYONE allow Paulie to make financial decisions, and why wouldn’t Rocky (or more likely Adrian) keep up on it? As for the Rocky/Tommy plot, I don’t consider Tommy a villain. He’s just a kid who has nothing but fighting. He’s young, dumb, and hungry for whatever opportunities he can get. He’s just as much a victim of exploitation as Rocky is, but unfortunately he couldn’t recognize who his problem was really with. The real villain is the promoter. He’s perfectly willing to take advantage of others for his own gain with little regard for their well-being, so Rocky’s warning to Tommy was spot-on. What makes him so dislikable is the fact that people like him exist in the real world, and we all know them. My take on the Rocky/Robert plot: There’s really no bad guy in this situation. Rocky has been shown to be a wonderful person and a great father. He just got caught up and failed to see how it affected his son. It wasn’t intentional on Rocky’s part, and it’s easy to see how it happened. Rocky already had trouble relating to Robert because the two are so different, and he also had trouble accepting that his career didn’t end on his own terms. Along comes another person who can more easily fill that void, and it was easier for Rocky to live vicariously through Tommy and pass on his knowledge to him.. No one is perfect, and this can happen to any parent, and likely most of them at one time or another. Rocky handled it right after he learned his mistake, immediately apologizing and trying to make up for it. I like Rocky V and feel a lot of the hate it gets is unjustified. I think a lot of that could come from the fact that the movie is so different in tone from the others in the series. It almost doesn’t feel like a Rocky movie, and it might not be what a lot of fans want or expect. But imo it’s a good movie in its own right, and a very important addition to the series. I’m so glad I found your channel. You’re an amzing reactor and I love your personality and sense of humor. I always look forward to your reactions.

I kind of came to the same conclusion - it made some mistakes, it wasn’t quite as strong, but most of all it was very different. I think it really benefits from a second watch, even though I liked it on the first go, I liked it even more while editing. I was a bit rough on Paulie, I think. I never figured he meant to screw them, but I was so frustrated that he couldn’t even admit he did a dumb thing (and Rocky definitely should have read what he was signing!) or apologize, instead shifting blame everywhere else. Tommy lost his head, he didn’t have the heart that Rocky had and Rocky couldn’t see the danger signs. I felt so sad for him, he’s so pure and doesn’t understand everyone isn’t like him. But Duke was definitely the closest to a villain in this movie, though I’d venture there really isn’t one. I’m glad you found my channel too! Thanks for the great comment, I love discussing this stuff with you guys! Wouldn’t be here without you 💜

@@RhetoricalThrill I feel like Duke was actually the most realistic villain in th series. He’s not another boxer for Rocky to knock out and go on with his day. He’s the greedy scumbag we all have to deal with in our own lives, perfectly willing to sacrifice the well-being of others for personal gain, and an expert at promising people the moon to worm his way in. That’s part of what makes him so irritating, because he represents a type of villain that is everywhere and that nobody can really stop.

Rocky V came out when I was eight years old. And Rocky IV was the first movie I ever saw in the theatre. I've had a very special relationship with these movies and these characters for my whole life. I was born disabled. And my Mom always said, "Don't you let anybody tell you you can't do anything you want to do!" And all through these movies, Rocky is told "You can't do it." ""You can't win." And he always finds a way. So, Rocky Balboa has been with me for as long as I can remember. And I really like Rocky V. It's a next logical state in the story. This is how Rocky handles getting knocked down. (In a more metaphorical sense.) And it's very powerful. For the family dynamics, the emotional beats, it all carries an amazing impact. People just didn't like this one at the time because it was different. I have a feeling that if Rocky and Tommy fought in the ring at the end, audiences would have responded differently. That's actually the first complaint that I often heard from others who didn't care for this one. "He didn't even fight in the ring! It was stupid?" But, I think after so much time has passed, and the movie gets reappraised, opinions are changing. And like Rocky said, "EVERYBODY CAN CHANGE!" P.S. Rocky IV is also the beginning of my unabashedly unironic love of the work of Mr. Dolph Lundgren. 😂

George Winston Duke is loosely based on real life boxing promoter Don King, who did promote some of the greatest boxing matches and boxers of all time. King was famous for often said "Only in America" much like Duke does while promoting fights, but unlike Duke, Don King was also famous for having really distinctive hair. But like Duke, Don King was infamous for treating his fighters poorly and would often have contracts written in a way that the promoter (himself) would get the most money rather than the fighters. Don King was exactly the kind of guy that would treat fighters exactly how Rocky described Duke to Tommy. "They promise every good young fighter who comes along, they promise him the world. And they suck'em dry and leave'em in the gutter broke."

Your reactions to Paulie are perfect for the kind of character he is and it really highlights what a great actor Burt Young was. This is something that needs clearing up: Paulie did nothing wrong. Everybody seems to think Paulie lost Rocky's fortune. This is what the movie tells you--their accountant sent a letter to the Balboas saying "If Rocky's going to Russia, then he needs to sign a tax extension." The accountant did this for the explicit reason to steal Rocky's money for his own underhanded schemes. Paulie received the letter and took it to Rocky but apparently neither he nor Adrian read it properly before signing it and running off on his Russian rampage of revenge. At which point, the accountant stole and lost Rocky's fortune. And on top of that, Rocky's accountant wasn't paying his income tax like he was supposed to! Paulie was a messenger, nothing more, if that. He didn't steal, give away, or lose Rocky's money. So everybody lighten the hell up on him. You want to be mad at someone, be mad at Rocky and Adrian for not paying any damn attention. As to Paulie apologizing, yes he did... but they cut it out. There was a scene shot where after Rocky comes home from Mick's gym, he discovers Paulie in the kitchen trying to commit suicide by sticking his head in the oven. Rocky and Paulie have a heart-to-heart (I'd have to read the script again to know exactly what they said), but the scene ends with Rocky telling Paulie he knows Paulie'd never go through with it [killing himself]. When Paulie asks how, Rocky turns on the kitchen light and reveals that all this time, Paulie had his head in the microwave. Obviously, this is not in the theatrical cut and it's not in the director's cut either, but a brief clip from this scene of Paulie muttering, "I still got my place in the old neighborhood" appears in the movie's trailer. Reportedly, Burt Young absolutely hated that this scene was removed and it caused a rift between him and Stallone that wasn't repaired until around the time they made "Rocky Balboa." As to the quality of "Rocky V," well, until "Balboa" came along it was the one that was most like the first movie. It was about people again, not boxing. "Balboa" just did everything "V" was trying to do better.

It's a testament to the writing of Paulie's character and to Burt Young's portrayal of the character that Paulie is who he is. Everyone else has a character arc but Paulie is a loser in the first film and for the most part remains a loser throughout the franchise. We get some glimpses of him wishing to be better and his guilt and remorse for not being a better person. But it's a sad truth that not everyone has the heart to make the changes one need to make for one's self and others. And I think Paulie's failure as a person is written specifically to highlight the strength of character that's in Rocky's heart.

@@RhetoricalThrill I appreciate you admitting that, it always bothered me the bad rep Paulie gets. Nobody ever looks at things from Paulie's perspective. He was Rocky's best (and only?) friend from jumpsteet, he hooked Rocky up with his sister, was risking his job getting free meat and yeah asked for help getting a better job (which Rocky didn't seem to do until maybe much later?). As pointed out in the comment above he was right there for his nephew, he took that hit from Tommy, and yeah he was scammed but he was always in defense of his family. Hell, he even went to Russia with Rocky in 4, he didn't need to be there and he surely wasn't comfortable he was there to support Rocky when Adrian wasn't. Sure Paulie had some dark moments, he was angry and bitter and you've seen by not how he ended up. He was a flawed and complicated character. But anyway, I'm glad I found your channel and I hope that you keep doing what you do (just maybe with a little more empathy for Paulie).

its a very good and underrated movie. for 1 thing , it is probably the most REALISTIC movie in the franchise, certainly more believable than all but rocky 1. internet trolls tend to hate 5 but love 6, let me predict, since you have good taste, you will like 6 far LESS than 5. tommy morrison (tommy gunn) was a real fighter and a far worse human being than his character in this film. the only good thing i can say about him is that he was convincing in this role, as a piece of garbage. stallone's original script called for his own character's death in the street fight, but the studio persuaded him that he couldnt kill this iconic character. stallone felt that spoiled the stakes, and lowered the drama, and has caused many to misinterpret his words with the falsehood "stallone himself hated the film". um, how can one write something they "hate"? its odd how many people hate on this movie, but seem to watch everyone's reaction to it, presumably to get angry at the viewer? i missed your reaction to rocky 4, i'll go watch that. good job with this one.

i hope you can be persuaded to watch "chuck" (2017). the "real" rocky balboa. stallone stole a great deal from chuck's story and the ali-wpner fight (1975) for the script of rocky 1. not the adrienne love story etc, but running stairs, collecting for the mob, punching raw meat, and the contrived way such an underrdog was given a chance at the title. chuck also went to the 15th round, and had knocked the champ down. chuck isnt nearly as fine a human being as the rocky character, but stallone lifted a lot from chuck's story, and didnt pay him until an out of court settlement in 2006. chuck is still alive thankfully. stallone also used steroids for rocky 3 and 4, while lundgren (drago) didnt. so , stallone himself isnt as fine a person as the fictional rocky character either. @@RhetoricalThrill

I later thought about why I dislike this movie. In the previous ROCKY movies, he faced obstacles that he had to overcome and that became inspirational to the audience. In this movie ROCKY gets knocked down but doesn't get back up (from riches to rags but not back to riches again). So it's not inspirational.

It's a good idea to watch all the movies and see what you feel yourself. In several movie franchises, I've noticed a lot of commenters will suggest just skipping some, but I've found I like a lot of movies that are typically dissed. Even if I don't like a movie in a series, I'll always be in favor of the reactor watching them all and making her or his own evaluation. People have different tastes. That said, I understand why people like this movie less, and I think it has a lot to do with Rocky losing his way with his son and going all in on Tommy. In the others he has been down or dispirited, but it was always about his own humility and not a total tranference of his attention from one person to another. I'm going to make a comment on the next movie, regarding Paulie. No spoilers, so I'm going to be extremely vague. Paulie's always been the type of person we all know who is abrupt and tactless and, at times, plain stupid in making decisions. In the next movie, there's a scene that was cut. All I'm going to suggest is to watch the movie, enjoy it, then react to the deleted scene. Cheers!

The "warnings" you got were because there are 2 types of Rocky fans - There's the 'action' Rocky fans (Rocky 3 and 4), and then there's the drama fans (Rocky 1, 2 5, 6). After Rocky 4 the action fans were expecting more of the same.

I must be both, because I just love Rocky 😂 I bet it was different seeing them as they released, vs all at once like I did. I could tell that they were all doing different things so I didn't have an expectation as far as tone.

This is a great movie. Paulie deserved to be punched and thrown out on the street and forgotten. He made me angry beyond all sense and reason. Stallone is a fine actor but he was never better than when he played Rocky. I always had a feeling that Sly is like Rocky in real life because the acting was just to real and good.

Rocky five doesn’t do it for me because what I liked about these films was supporting him and his reasons for why he fights. And even if he fought Union cane at the end, he would’ve just done it for money.

I can see that. For me this was about showing us Rocky is who he is, inside the ring or out. It's not for money, it's not for show, it's for himself and his family at the end of the day. Just gritty and stripped down. It was different, but in a way I appreciated, though I understand why it might not be that way for everyone.

this is false. he ruined himself, and did in fact have hiv. he claimed it was a false diagnosis so he could keep boxing, which endangered everyone he fought ( boxers bleed on each other sometimes). it was all his own fault and he was pure trash, far worse in real life than in this film. dont promote him as any type of tragedy. nothing unfair happened to him, he brought 100% of his problems on himself, then brought those problems to other fighters and the boxing commission.

Yeah it was a fitting way to follow up Rocky 4 but it was more to make money let's face it. Because back to the roots was the only way to go at that point unless Rocky fought an alien or a robot. But getting his money back would have killed the point of the piece

@@RhetoricalThrill Yes they are. In fact that's probably true of 4. Ending at 3 would've been fine having resolved the character arc of Rocky. Though 4 was a very good political satire of the Cold War. I don't think you were around so you probably couldn't know what it was like going to bed worrying about the world being destroyed or taken over by the Soviets. So when Rocky kicked Drago's butt there was thunderous applause in the cinema. But you have a point about having him fall being realistic. And again it was the way to go. Plus as an Italian American I loved the Italian Philadelphia aspect in it that was in 1 and 2. Gloria the pet shop owner, Andy the bartender, Father Carmine etc.

I love how unapologetic you are about standing your ground and defending Rocky V from 1990. Honestly I’ve always hated until about my third or fourth viewing of this fourth sequel of the Rocky franchise. It’s a guilty pleasure movie and i find myself to enjoy it every time when i binge watch my Rocky collection on DVD. That flashback scene with Mickey hits the feels every time i watch it. I’ll say it here and now… Rocky V is a good movie and i really don’t give a phuck who says or thinks otherwise however I’ll admit the street fight ending is weak and i really cringe every time but seriously it’s a worthwhile watch if you’re a fan of the franchise and if not that’s understandable if you find that it’s a letdown or just sorely disappointing throughout the runtime. Rocky V to me is a solid contender and a real knockout even though it falls short against Goodfellas, Home Alone, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ghost, and Pretty Woman. I didn’t hear no bell! 🥊🏆#Rocky #SylvesterStallone #1990 #RIPSageStallone

Someone I know who doesn't like it had a really good explanation for me, namely that it was anticlimactic for what at the time was supposed to be the finale of the series. And in that sense I can see it being a disappointment, especially after the bombastic Part IV. As part of an overall story, which I know has more to tell, I like it!

And no..Drago literally beat what smarts he picked up since 2 out of him. Rocky was even dumber in this one.. It was kinda jarring for me to see it.. As for the how is that legal? Ask several celebrities who were ripped off at the time.. Willy Nelson i believe was one of them. He got scammed out of money. And had to work the road for decades to pay off the IRS.

Tommy Gunn is a detestable character.,in addition to being useful to Rocky , he also turned against Balboa. In addition to being arrogant ,he proved to be unintelligent as he was manipulated by unscrupulous business men . Despite being a fictional character, Tommy Gunn showed that his behavior is one of the worst examples.
