Fun fact: The final fight was filmed during an actual event (with other, real fights). None of the fans there knew Rocky was going to come out, and he got the biggest cheers that night (more than any of the real fighters). That moment at the end when he’s emotional and the fans were chanting was genuinely Stallone emotional at the fans’ adoration of Rocky.

He’s right. If you pause the movie, you can see the banners hanging in the rafters of the actual fight taking place that night. Also, the Mason Dixon character is actually a real professional boxer and if you pause the movie of him fighting in the buildup, you can see his real name on his trunks.

That speech that Rocky gives Robert is so fucking good. It's one of those speeches that I think every teenager/college student needs to hear at least once a month while they're still in school. So many people fall into that mindset of when they fail at something they start looking for something/someone to blame rather than learn from that experience, grow and then to try again. I've caught myself doing the blame thing before realizing the problem was me and getting my mind right again. It's one of my favorite scenes in the entire Rocky/Creed franchise.

@@RhetoricalThrill My take on Paulie... Yes, Paulie reminds me of that person who has many deep issues and helps you out for some reason and they grow on you?? And you know they (Paulie) can have a big heart. I assume Paulie and Adrian lost their parents at a young age. I am thinking Adrian is Paulie's Baby sister and Paulie probably had to care for Adrian for sometime, resents missing out on much of his youth but does not realize what a great thing he did he kept his family together, raised a great woman, pushed his sister to a marry great man. Losing parents young probably messed him up (drinking). I am thinking he did not have many friends and was never told by anyone that he is doing a good thing raising his sister (positive reinforcement can help shape you). Rocky knew Paulie from the bar, Rocky seems to take an interest in everyone and loves being a "Fixer"for people. It took me a while to figure this out over the years after seeing the first Rocky in the theater back in 1976 as a six year old kid.

"What is it you said to the kid? It ain't about how hard you're hit, it's about how you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. Get up!" Fun Fact: Pedro Lovell reprises his role as Spider Rico, the boxer defeated by Rocky in the opening scene of Rocky (1976). Authentic Battle Damage Fact: The bout between Rocky and Dixon was filmed with actors Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Tarver really hitting one another. According to Stallone, not a single punch in the fight was pulled and every hit on film was a hit for real. Furthermore, Stallone has revealed that the scene where Rocky is knocked down for a 9 count, and is trying to get to his feet by taking hold of the rope, but is having difficulty focusing on it, is completely genuine; Tarver really did knock him down, and he really couldn't get up. Location Location Fact: During preproduction, as the filmmakers tried to find a good location to shoot the fight, they met with constant obstacles - every suitable arena was booked out. Sylvester Stallone knew that HBO had an upcoming PPV event with Bernard Hopkins taking on Jermaine Taylor in the main event, at the Mandalay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Stallone suggested that the film could piggyback the real event, using the real HBO format, the real crowd, even the real press conference setup. As such, the press conference scene was shot only moments after the real press conference with Hopkins and Taylor, whilst the scene when Rocky walks through the curtain and down to the ring was shot using the real Hopkins/Taylor crowd. Stallone was hoping that the crowd wouldn't boo or cause any problems, but as he made his way to the ring (as Rocky), the whole building gave him a standing ovation and began a "ROCKY, ROCKY" chant. The crowd was never told to stand up or to chant - they had done it completely on their own, and according to the filmmakers, by far the biggest cheer of the night was for Rocky, not for any of the real fighters.

16:04 it's unrealistic, but maybe not as much as you would think. Rocky movies are often about whatever is going on in Stallone's life at the time, but also based on real things that happened in boxing. This story is taking inspiration from George Foreman, one of boxing's greats, who came out of retirement and won the Heavy Weight Title at the age of 45, against a 26 year old, even while he was overweight and looking nothing like he did when he first won the belt in his early 20s. And more recently Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. had an exhibition fight in their 50s. The original Rocky was based on Chuck Wepner, a nobody in the sport, fighting the legendary Muhammad Ali and doing way better than anyone expected.

My take on the movie is this: It may seem unrealistic for an older person (Rocky is either 60 or close to it in this movie) to box, but it’s not unheard of. I’ve seen a 70-year old in a boxing match before (it was for a benefit or something iirc). Also fighters have broken their hand and kept fighting before. Eventually it becomes numb. As for Rocky’s relationship with Robert, they’re distant but in a very realistic way imo. Neither of them really did anything wrong and there’s no animosity there. They just grew apart because they lead different lives and went down different paths. They’ve always kinda struggled to relate to each other because they’re so different. Rocky was always a boxer and more the physical, athletic sort, whereas Robert was more book smart and creative. And like you said, they no longer had Adrian there to bring them together so they just drifted apart. I do think it was a nice touch for them to reconcile over Adrian’s grave. They clearly have love for each other as father and son, but they’re just so different. The battle of this movie was definitely about Rocky’s grief over Adrian. Every movie so far has been about Rocky’s various inner struggles (self-doubt, the doubts of others, fear, revenge, inadequacy, etc.). Now his battle was grief, and it stands to reason he would go back to the only way he knows how to get past it. I totally would go to Rocky’s restaurant and listen to his stories all day. I’m sure the food would be amazing.

Okay, so the whole thing with Rocky and Rocky Jr. (I don't play that "Robert" game): this all came about because of the state of Stallone's relationship with his son Sage. Sage was having trouble carving his own way through life for pretty much the same reasons as in the movie and it caused a rift between Sly and Sage. When Stallone finally got this movie off the ground, he offered the Jr. part to Sage, but he turned it down, saying "No more Rocky for me." So Sly goes off and makes the movie and when it premieres, he begs Sage to come to the premiere. "I want you to see what I have to say to you," Sly told him. And Sage came. And when the movie was over, they reconciled and were close again until he died. And Sage was especially proud that his dad had made, in his words, "a compelling film." Stallone's career had died and he went into "Rocky Balboa" thinking it would be the last film he was ever going to make, so he put everything he had into it--including his directing, writing, and acting fees, essentially doing the movie for free--and the end result speaks for itself. The film reinvigorated Stallone's career into where it is today. About Rocky's brain problems. What happened to them? MGM. Back in March of 2006, there was a sneak preview showing of RB in Philadelphia and the folks that saw it there told me it ran about 2 1/2 hrs long. MGM told Stallone, "We're not releasing a two-and-a-half-hour Rocky movie. Cut it down to an hour forty-five." So Stallone was forced to eviscerate the movie... and with all those cuts went everything dealing with "Rocky V." This movie revealed that due to better technology we have today (well, then, almost 20 years ago now), Rocky didn't actually have brain damage--he just had a major concussion (that apparently lasted at least five years??). And so that was how Stallone dealt with that. When he was doing the talk show rounds for this movie, the brain damage thing was still on everyone's mind and the hosts would ask about it and Stallone would explain this very thing every time because he had to take it out of the movie. There was a whole saga about the making of this movie and what Stallone had to go through and get around to make the thing. It culminated in one of the heads of MGM--pissed off that Stallone had went around him and got the movie made anyway after he'd said no--leaking a DVD-quality master of the movie to the internet the night before the film's release so that it would tank the movie and "put Stallone in his place." But RB, much like Rocky himself, beat the odds and went on to become a low-budget success, earning 100 million domestic on a meager 25 million budget. MGM would go on to tell Stallone they never made any profit from the film. Stallone's contract stated he would get a percentage of the profits. As far as I know, he still hasn't seen a penny from this movie. In the screenplay for the movie, instead of Max Kellerman, the third commentator was Clubber Lang! And surprise of surprises, Clubber is the only one who believes Rocky can win. And he's constantly calling the other two "fools" for doubting Rocky. It also leads to this brilliant exchange before the fight-- "Clubber glances over at Rocky and waves. PAULIE: Why's he smilin' so much? DUKE: Heard he found God. ROCKY: That'll do it." Unfortunately, then Mr. T was filming his short-lived reality show and wasn't available to do it. :-/ I don't know if it makes you feel any better, but Stallone totally steals and walks off with "Creed," so much so that they had to cut a bunch of great scenes he did so he was doing it less. I put said scenes back into the movie and it's the only way I'll watch it. Lastly, if you go to Philly, DON'T run up the steps. It is a fool's errand. The whole point of Rocky running up the steps was to show how strong he had become during training. But us normos are all like "Pfft. I got this." Don't do it; mosey up those steps like a sane person. It seriously messed me up for the rest of the day when I did it. I cannot discourage people from trying that enough.

And I would have SQUEED to see Clubber back as a commentator! I’m so glad Stallone and Sage reconciled before he passed. I didn’t know he had until after I watched V. How very sad, no one should have to bury their child.

George Foreman shocked the world when he won the heavyweight championship at 46 yo. And he did it the same way they trained Rocky for this fight, no speed, just sheer power and heart. So the idea of this happening isn't as far-fetched as you first think, there is a precedent for it. 😎👍👊

I believe Stallone won an award for best supporting actor in Creed. The second act twist, you won't see coming. The basement: I'm an on/off gymrat. 40 isn't olde olde, but also I can't train the way I did in my twenties. Recovery might be fine, but I DEFINITELY take warming up a little more seriously. Why do I keep coming back to weight training? Beyond wanting to perform an unassisted toilet squat when I'm 70, well. There's still something in the basement. Still something to prove to myself. Hurtin' bombs: after I was a victim of SA, Duke's words rang in my head. That feeling of being weak pervaded my psyche for a time. "Heavy duty, pile driving punches that'll hurt so hard they'll rattle his ancestors." I wanted to feel strong. (Thankfully, that acute feeling of weakness has passed. Still like feeling strong, as always.)

I can attribute the brain damage inconsistency to a few things. One, always get a second opinion. The doctors could have been wrong in Rocky 5, or the diagnosis could have been less severe than they originally thought, or the testing might not have been advanced as it is in Rocky 6. Two, it's only recently that we learned about brain plasticity. The brain is more adaptable than people once imagined it was. I don't know the real excuse, but that's how I reconcile the brain damage issue. I like that you mentioned at the end of the video that people die in real life. The Rocky movies always resonated with me because of how relatable they are. I highly recommend watching the first two Creed movies. I haven't seen the third one yet, but the first two are really a continuation of this world.

I know you’ve said before how you’re not sure about the Creed movies, and it’s your choice of course, but I think you should give them a chance. Rocky is an integral part of the first two of them, and they actually continue his story and the series. I don’t see the Creed movies as a spin-off but rather a continuation that is intertwined. They breathe new life into the series. Plus they have some of Sly’s best acting in the series, and Rocky is the sweetest old man. The third Creed doesn’t have Rocky in it, but it is also a great movie (with one of the most emotional scenes in the series imo). I hope you’ll give these excellent movies a chance.

Fighters have broken their hands in matches before and continued fighting. I'm reminded of one, it was Micky Ward vs. Arturo Gatti in their third match against each other. I forget which round it was but Gatti broke his hand when he accidentally punched Ward in the hip (just like Dixon did here). When he got back to his corner his trainer asked him what was wrong because he could tell Gatti was in pain. Gatti said my hand broke. His trainer asked him what Gatti wanted to do and Gatti told him "I gotta keep going." He ended up winning the fight. There is a movie based on Micky Ward's life called "The Fighter" it's pretty good. I recommend checking it out. Ward vs. Gatti isn't covered in the movie, but their three fights against each other are considered some of the best fights in boxing history. Especially their first one.

Originally Adrian was going to be in the movie, Talia Shire had agreed to do it and they worked out her pay. Stallone felt the script lacked a good reason for Rocky to step back into the ring and felt Adrian's death would be believable motivation. Plus Adrian didn't have much to do in the script at the time outside of the "fighters fight" speech which was originally going to be delivered by Adrian. He talked to Talia about it and she was openly supportive of it. Stallone still made sure she received her full pay, Listing it as pay for the archival footage. on the other side of things According to the actress who played Little Marie in the original film and deleted scenes of Rocky 5, Stallone had promised her the part and she had cleared her schedule to do the movie. She sued and they settled out of court. So either she misunderstood something since they recast the role or Stallone decided to go in another direction and failed to inform her.

I'm sorry if I'm repeating something that someone else mentioned already, but.... As to the "why".... Sylvester Stallone once said that he had written several drafts of the script where Adrian was alive and Robert (Rocky Jr.) was in the Air Force. Rocky expressed the desire to fight again and his family were justifiably perplexed. Sylvester didn't find that emotionally engaging or interesting. He said that if we as an audience were going to get back behind Rocky as an underdog, then he would have to be at a place in his life where he felt like less than zero. In order for that to happen, the most precious part of Rocky's life had to be gone. Now, he isn't just wanting to fight to prove he still can. Now the desire to fight is born out of a deep place of grief and rage. Figuring out how to deal with the worst kind of trauma. Figuring out how to heal and move on to a new part of life. He has to get rid of the "need" to fight. The "beast" inside, the "angry stuff in the basement." This has become my favorite film in the core Rocky series. It's all about the heart, the last thing on a person to age. If you can be grateful for your blessings in life and "keep moving forward" through whatever you face, you are rich.

5:48 I like Paulie’s part in this. He’s realized how bad he treated her and can’t fix it. He’s the victim of the military & government not supporting their soldiers once they leave service. He seems like a person that is haunted by his past. Both of them aren’t moving on. Rocky is expecting everyone close to him to feel the same way he feels. It’s fine to remember the past but don’t force others to do the same if they don’t feel like it. 9:15 it’s different from the last movie. This one is his son wanting to have his own life but is always referred to as “Baby Rocky” and gets asked why he’s not a fighter like his dad. 12:44 how did he pass his tests? His brain was scrambled after fighting Drago plus he’s been right eye blind since the second movie. 21:22 this July 2024 Mike Tyson (58) will be boxing Jake Paul (27) which if Rocky & Dixon are playing the actor’s actual ages then they have almost the same age difference (Rocky 60 & Dixon 38)

I saw a picture and I swore that man had just walked off the set of Rambo: first blood part II. Rocky was in very different shape than we'd ever seen him before in this film. In a year he had totally changed his body. Not just at his age but at any age that is just incredible.

For me as a long time Rocky fan, this movie was a brilliant end to Rocky's story. Yes there's the Creed series but those are a passing of the torch, but this is where the OG story ends.

No, sadly, they don't. I didn't really explain it well, but what I meant was more thematically I didn't understand the choice. But once I realized it symbolized something else entirely I got it.

The did film two different endings. One where Rocky got the decision win and the one that made it into the movie. I think they always intended for Rocky to lose but they didn't want spoilers from the live crowd to leak online so they filmed both.

Stallone shot four endings for the movie! 1.) Rocky loses decision. 2.) Rocky loses K.O. 3.) Rocky wins decision. 4.) Rocky wins K.O.

Will Buckle up, because Sylvester Stallone is actually writing another Rocky film. You can see recent interviews he is discussing a new script he has been working on for a few years now. And saying that just because it's being written doesn't mean it will ever get done. But he's already got plans to do another Rocky film. And you may have also heard there is a rocky prequel coming out.

Your calling Paulie a complex character shows you see into things more than most. Most people just love to hate him, and that's that, so you're an outlier, which is a good thing. Can't wait for you to watch the deleted scene. :)

I actually saw the scene just after I filmed. It’s a shame they cut it, it was so short and did a lot for ole Paulie. He’ll never not annoy me, but that’s just how some people are 😆 and it doesn’t make them bad. Thank you for being here!
