I think you've summed it up perfectly and felt the same way I do. The first one is probably an overall better movie, but I like the second one more. The first one had to do the heavy work of introducing us to the characters, while this one can jump right in. One thing that makes both movies special is that there's no real bad guy. Rocky has a tremendous amount of respect for Apollo the entire time, and Apollo is not really fighting Rocky so much as his own demons. I mean, Paulie is a bad guy but he's not The bad guy. These movies are just about well-developed characters whose motivations you completely understand. And at the heart of it is I think the greatest love story in cinematic history.

Nooooooo. Rocky I was too gritty and authentic. This entered into a Hollywood fluff and pomp movie. Rocky could not have been counted out at the end because he didn't fall by a punch, and it would be considered a slip. It gets even cheesier after this.

Say what you will about Apollo... It was his pride that got him in trouble. But i really love that one moment he drops his image when Rocky asks him, "did you give her your best?". It was almost like he was deflated in that moment. Weathers really did some great physical acting between that moment and his look of utter disbelief in the original. Unlike many films it's hard to totally hate Apollo.

Apollo understood the business side of boxing where Rocky doesn't. A champ's real job is to do and say what needs said to get people to buy tickets. The promoter makes moneyvand the promoter pays the fighters. TV revenues factorvin now, but as champ Apollo still has to pump the match up in the first movie or nnobody outside a 1p block area of low income Philly will care about Rocky getting a dream shot. He made it from a back room brawl to a spectacle to bring in the money crowd that take the five star hotdl suites and pay the big money for the premium seats that get everybody a bigger paycheck. Rocky thinks boxing is just about the bout itself, so he comes off flat, even comedic, in the press. He learns, sort of, but still does not have Apollo's skills outside the ring and in the three-piece suit.

"I just got one thing to say... to my wife at home: Yo, Adrian! I DID IT!" Fun Fact: When Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) is training for the fight, he is sparring with a smaller quicker fighter. The sparring partner is played by real life Champion Roberto Durán. Making Lemonade Fact: Originally, Adrian was supposed to be at the big fight. However, because Talia Shire was working on another movie at the time, the storyline was changed to having her stay home and watch the fight on television. The scenes of her watching the boxing match on television were shot, and then edited into the movie several months after filming once the fight scenes had finished. Incredible Run Fact: Analysis by Philadelphia locals tracked the route Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) took through the city during his training run when all the children ended up running with him. If he took this actual route from his South Philly house to the top of the Art Museum steps he would've run approximately 30.2 miles in one day - 4 miles more than a marathon. Not impossible by any means, but Rocky isn't training or built for that kind of run.

The character of Duke, Apollo's trainer is one of the best characters in the series. For all the people that surround Apollo due to his success, Duke is the only one who genuinely gives a shit about him, hence the "Let it go" speech isn't just about protecting the title, it's protecting Apollo from fights that will damage him beyond just a win and a loss. Basically the same perspective as Mickey doing the blind spot test with Rocky. Also, the opening of the fight with Rocky taking continued abuse, Carl Weather's is 4-5 inches taller than Stallone, so they work that into the fight story of Apollo's range and superior technique being able to pick Rocky apart, while Rocky has to battle to find his openings within that range, the idea of taking multiple hits to land one good one and basically grind Apollo down.

The fighter he was sparring with there was a legendary fighter Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran one of the greatest fighters off all time. He held world titles in 4 different weight divisions throughout his career. His record was 107 wins, 16 loses and 70 wins coming by way of KO.

Good review. This is my favorite of the series. 3 and 4 are also really good. 5 isn't on the same level. The only reason to watch it is to make up your own mind of whether you like it or not. Scoring is done by round. The winner of a round gets 10 points. The loser gets 9 or fewer. Usually, if there are no knockdowns, and it was reasonably competitive, they'll award 9. At the championship level, if the judges view the round as even, the 10 goes to the champion. But the underdog might get the round if the champ has a lead of a few points.

I grew up left-handed myself but, when I dabbled in the idea of boxing in my teens (inspired by Rocky of course), I would adopt a right-handed stance - that means jabbing with the left and swinging with the right. I don't know why but it felt wrong the other way around. Thus a southpaw is not necessarily left-handed I'd say (since I wasn't right-handed). I believe Adrian had no idea whether Rocky was left-handed or right-handed for writing in the first film (likely having never seen him write), she only knew he'd been talking about being a left-handed fighter and was referring to that.

Back then, in school, if a kid was left handed the teachers just forced them to write with their right hand. I don't think Rocky got a whole lot of schooling as it was easier for kids to drop out and considering he struggles with reading, whatever schooling he did get was likely halfass and just enough to get by. And since he was signing his autograph in the hospital he likely learned his signature to cash checks and the like. My dad dropped out in the third grade (he's the last of the Silent Generation so older than Rocky) and he never learned to read and write beyond that and signing his signature for his paychecks. So it's not too out there for Rocky to write with his right hand.

The points system you have 3 judges they look at # of hits and the quality of the hits. So if no one gets knocked down in the round each judge will score 10 points for winner of round other one gets 9,if there is a knockdown winner gets 10 other 8. At end they add them up but the judges do not compare or talk about the points they keep it to themselves

The actor Paul McCrane would become better known a few years later in "RoboCOP" as the henchman that gets nuked with toxic sludge and splattered on a car windshield. Lol.. he also went on to play the arrogant surgeon "Rocket" Romano on "ER".. I think he gets his arm chopped off in a helicopter blade if I remember correctly? Lol. 23:59 yes there is. In a fight 3 judges will judge on who won a round. They look at most punches landed and how they defended themselves and take in the fact if someone got knocked down. In the end they tally up the score and that’s results. There would be 3 types of decision wins. Unanimous, majority (1 judge says it’s a draw while the other 2 agree on a winner), and split (2-1 on who won). There’s sometimes draws. A traditional draw where 2 judges each pick a winner while the other says it’s a draw. A majority draw is where only 1 judge declared a winner while the other 2 said it was a draw. Also if a fighter commits an infraction the referee will pause the fight and instruct the judges to deduct a point. A second and it becomes 2 more points. And a third ends it by disqualification (example Andrew Golota vs Riddick Bowe

What I love about the first two movies is that Apollo isn’t a villain. Antagonist sure, but he’s not evil or anything. The first fight is just business for him till Rocky drops him, then he comes back from that and goes to war. And his motivations for the second fight are even more understandable, suddenly the whole world forgets he’s the greatest boxer on the planet or they think he was just carrying Rocky. He’s defending his honor and anyone can identify with that. Future Rocky antagonists get almost cartoonish in their one dimensional bad guy role but Apollo felt like as real of a person as Rocky does.

I don't think it was better or worse than the first, but I agree that I enjoy this one a bit more, especially since I'm older. The first was Rocky measuring his self worth by his accomplishments, while this one was him measuring his self worth by providing for his family. I also liked the concept that he fell into money and quickly blew it, because it's a reality for most people, whether it's a cash prize or some schmuck getting a credit card, people can relate to the struggle. I'm on board for the rest of the journey. 3 is a little meh, but don't let it discourage you from watching the rest.

Based on the locations in the film that Rocky ran past, someone was able to plot out on MapQuest the most likely path he took for his run at the end of the training montage. The route was just over 30 miles long, which is around 4 miles longer than a full marathon, so it is unlikely that Rocky would've actually run that in training. There have been fans of the film that have held fun runs where they run the entire 30 miles.

24:00 Boxing is usually done on a 10-point scale. There are 3 judges and each one gives who they think won the round 10 points and the other boxer will get 9, 8 or 7 points depending on how well they did in comparison. So the first round might have been like 10-7 or even 10-6 for Apollo since Rocky did not really do much fighting back at all. Lots of the later rounds were probably 10-9 since they were much more even but Apollo was so far ahead in points from those first rounds Rocky needed that knock-out to win.

I always figured Rocky was ambidextrous, which is probably why he adapted fighting right handed so well. I just found your channel. Enjoying the Rocky journey.

I have a small issue with the ending of the movie, it's not that Rocky won, but there was a little bit of a stretch with the rules of boxing. Rocky shouldn't have been counted out along with Creed. By rule the only way that you can be counted as knocked down is if your opponent punches you and you fall. Rocky wasn't punched, so his fall should've been counted as slip and Creed should've been the only receiving a count. There should've been no chance of a draw there. The only way I can see where the ref made the decision to count Rocky too was due to the ref warning Rocky before the round that if he got in trouble, he would stop the fight. Rocky did slip but because he didn't immediately get back up the ref may have thought that Rocky hurt himself when he slipped and fell, or that he had used the last bit of energy he had left and wouldn't be able to continue. So, he used the 10 count to as a way to determine if Rocky could continue fighting.

If you said you liked this better than the first, I wouldn’t argue. I think the first is the best, but this is excellent. The 3rd is where it becomes cheesy. The first 2 almost feel like one continuous movie. At the centre of this movie is Talia Shire’s Adrian. She’s what keeps it together. He’s doing it for her. He gets the crap beat out of himself not for himself but for her. If she wasn’t behind him, he wouldn’t have done it. By the 4th movie, he probably would have done it without her. That’s what makes the first 2 special. They’re a continuous love story.

And all you can think about is the fight?” Like there’s a serious life issue going on dude. There you can tell Mick threw away a regular life for a profession he never went forward in himself. No wife or children of his own. All boxing and than running a gym where nothing but bums (except Rocky) went in (Mick talking about some dude being a contender yet Rocky was the only one to make it out of that gym). Like Mick there’s more than just a professional sport. There’s a life outside. You almost have to respect Apollo’s insistence on not just running away from Rocky and coasting to an easy win on points. It was better for Apollo to go for it head on and lose than take the easy way for a cheap win. I never considered Apollo to be a villain (before I saw 3 obviously). "Why is he writing with the wrong hand?" You'll find it's fairly common for people from Stallone's generation and older to write with their right hand, even if they're left-handed. It's because everyone was taught to write with their right hand. Whether this is a holdover from the "dexter vs. sinister" religious basis is up for debate. But it's definitely how it played out.
