Haymitch won the 50th hunger games, which was a “Quarter Quell,” meaning they had twice as many tributes. Haymitch humiliated the game makers when he won, so president snow had his family and girlfriend murdered. For the last 24 years Haymitch, as the only living victor, and therefore only mentor of district 12, had to watch every tribute from 12 die. If you know his backstory, it’s understandable that he became a drunk.

One of the things, Peeta did not get his injury because they got bored of him, he got it protecting Katniss when she was hallucinating, the Peeta part, him telling her to run was real, Cato "the bad guy" was coming Peeta stay behind and fought him to give Katniss some time to get away. Also the bread is so important in the book because Katniss saw the act as Peeta saving her and her family lives because they had not eaten in days so from the very beginning she has a soft spot for Peeta because if it was any other guy who was picked to go in the games with her, she would have gone at the games all alone. It has to be said Gale and Katniss are just FRIENDS, some people just assume they are together but they are not, so she does not owe him anything, yes Gale likes her but he does not even come to the realization until like 5 months before katniss goes into the games and does not say anything to Katniss about him liking her.

I've said this in the past, but it's always true: Donald Sutherland makes a really good villain as President Snow. It's kind of the same paradox with Imelda Staunton/Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter: a delightful actor playing such a vile, despicable character.

I know you don’t care since it’s the movies but the movies do Peeta mad dirty, like they take away 80% of his personality and strengths and it’s why I don’t blame people for not caring about him much. Don’t know why they messed him up this badly because he is the personality, very witty and has the audience all over him. Knows how to play the game and saves Katniss life multiple times, which is a common theme since Katniss feels that she’ll never stop owing him, and he doesn’t struggle during training at all. He excels at hand to hand combat and with a knife, whereas Katniss is weak at hand to hand combat but has that range with a bow.

That extra meal when they were almost hopeless literally changed the Everdeen's fortunes and saved their lives. Yeah, when you do the math on it, it's heartbreaking. There have been 23 Games since the one he won, so with two tributes from 12 each time, that's 46 more kids he's watched die, in addition to the 47 he had to outlive in his own Games (which had double the tributes because it was the 50th year of the games). And then there's the history they never fully divulge in the movies, about Haymitch's entire family being killed because the president didn't like the WAY he won his Games. In other words, he's a closed off alcoholic due to DEEP and ongoing trauma.

I enjoyed your reaction! One reason that the districts havent revolted again despite this is that one district couldnt do it alone and there is no communication between districts. The only time people from different districts see each other or talk is when the children are killing each other. The only exception really being that most peqcekeepers are from district 2. The care that Katriss showed to Rue was the first real spark because she showed such care. Tributes sometimes team up, but Katness risked herself to stay with Rue and then give her a little memorial. The second in the book but not movie was Rue's district sending Katness bread. It would have been hard for them to pull together the money for them and they sent it to a district other thsn there own and they even had a kid still in there they could have sent something to instead. Thresh saving and sparing Katness was a rebellion too. And what could they do to her? They could kill her family like they have other "victors" or... well, watch the next one and see. ;)

To be fair, rising up isn't easy. The people are starving. They have no weapons. They're worked to the bone. The capital is already taking their children which proves that they will do anything and they completely destroyed District 13. It's understandable that they feel helpless to protect their children. All they feel they can do is hope and pray that their child isn't the one chosen. Also, context from the book. The three fingers to the mouth then towards a person is a funeral gesture in District 12. It's used to honor the dead and their family. That's why it's so morbid and why Katniss does it when Rue dies. In the book she directs the gesture towards Rue, not the cameras, as she never knows for sure where the cameras are or when they are showing her. But I get that the movie had to make some changes and couldn't add every detail

  • @Skye_Writer
    @Skye_Writer3 ай бұрын

The reason that the people have rioted over this is that they have spent the last 74 years being beaten down. They are all basically starving. In the books Rue talks about how she rarely has enough to eat at home, and Katniss responds that she would have thought being from an agricultural district Rue's family would have more access to fresh food. Rue asks, "Do you get as much coal as you need just because your district mines it?" and Katniss realizes that of course every district has it as bad as her district does. Everything that gets harvested or mined or made is sent to the Capitol first, so that they get everything _they_ need/want first, and then the Districts get the leftovers rationed out to them. Disctricts 1 and 2 are on the best terms with the Capitol and are the closest districts, so the "career tributes," the kids who actually are allowed to train with weapons and be ready for combat come from Districts 1 and 2, and to keep those districts on their side, the Capitol gives them the best and the most of the rations. Everywhere else, they are starving, they have to rely on the government rations to get by, which means their names get added to the reaping bowl...and only families who still have kids between 12 and 18 can do that. If your kids are too young for the reaping or if they are already grown up, you have no one in the house who can get that extra food for you. Katniss and her family were starving because her dad died when she was 11 and she wasn't of age yet to sign up for the rations. And no one has any weapons. This is why Katniss has to keep her bow hidden in the woods. Only the Peacekeepers are allowed to have ANY kind of weapon, and you saw what happened to the rioters in District 11; that got put down real quick.

Something the movies talked about in passing is the fact that your name gets put into the reaping once a year from the time you turn 12 to 18; by the time you're 18, you'll have your name in the reaping 7 times. Then you can also put your name into the reaping an extra time for tesserae (a years worth of grain and oil) each year for each member of your family, and it's cumulative too. So by the time Katniss volunteered (she was 16), she had her name in the reaping a total of 20 times (5 for each of the years she had been of age, then 15 more because she took tesserae every year for all three members of her family). She refused to let Prim take tesserae too. Gale came from a larger family, and he was older than her; he was 18 during THG, he has 5 family members including himself, and he put in for tesserae for his family every year so by the time of the 74th Hunger Games, he had his name in the reaping 42 times. The fact that Prim's name was called on her very first reaping when she only had her name in once was just horrible luck.

It always blows people away how much better it is, because the first one is good enough you just hope the sequel is about as good....but it manages to take it to a whole nother level. It's the film that convinced me I needed to read the books, and I'm glad I did. Backstory Haymitch also showed them up and they killed his girlfriend and family, then he had to mentor many tributes from his district that always died until Katniss and Peeta. So yes you never win the game and there are consequences if you show them up. What saved Katniss and Peeta in a way was how her story of love made them capital favorites and her sacrifice for her sister made her a favorite so the president didn’t want to make her a martyr.

Not sure if anyone covered this but the mutts at the end are created out of the fallen tributes DNA. In the book katniss noticed that they have the same eyes and the same color for as the tributes hair. Also Cato has a suit on that cannot be sliced so the scene where the mutts are attacking him in the book last longer and finally katniss shoots him to put him out of his misery and he begs her to do it. Last note as others said they did Peeta dirty in the movies. He is Katniss's rock and keeps her grounded. She is strong and quick in battle but he helps her stay sane and not lose herself.

The movie don't make justice to Peeta. In the book Peeta's mom is abusive, she hit him for burning the bread, at the next day at school Katniss saw Peeta with a black eye. The bread that Peeta throw to Katniss was and heavy and expensive bread full with nuts. It's believe he burned on purpose to throw it to Katniss. And they were eleven at the time. Katniss was dying of famine and thinking about prostituting herself to have money to feed her little sister, that bread was the hope and motivation she needed to live.

Peeta is one of my favourite male characters ever ngl he is soft and that's the beauty of it. The author purposefully switched traditionally gendered characteristics and activities for Katniss and Peeta. So she's the physical protector, a hunter who has trouble expressing her feelings and he's a kind hearted romantic who bakes and paints. And as a woman it was very refreshing to see a male love interest just be a genuine kind and selfless person. There's a lot of symbolism attached to these 2 that are a bit more obvious later on, especially in the books. The only huge disservice the movies did tbh was butchering the bread scene which was pivotal for Katniss. That bread he burned on purpose not only saved her and her family from starvation but most importantly gave her emotional strength to carry on. She associates him with hope. I still don't understand why they didn't hire a couple of younger kids for the scene (they're 11 in the book), CGI little Katniss to look emaciated, and let the viewers figure out the flashback. What a lack of faith in public's media literacy lol Instead Katniss looks sad in the rain lol And they were pushing the love triangle (way less of a thing in the books) just because it was a popular thing to do in YA oriented media and that's another thing that annoyed me with these movies. I do hope you continue because it's a surprisingly deep franchise that actually had things to say beyond the edgy violence (which is how I frankly see Battle Royal) or Twilight levels of "plot" or "romance".

I went to watch this movie with my partner when it came out and i was not happy to see it (was kind of dragged to the cinema), but she had loved the books and assured me id love it, by the end of the movie i was in tears a few times, and was eagerly awaiting the next movies we knew were coming. this is epic series 1-4. after, its typical hollywood sadly imo. Looking forward to the rest with you. Peace from UK

The basis of the hunger games was an intellectual exercise to come up with a punishment so horrible that your enemies would never dare oppose you again.

About the bread: He actually burnt it on purpose, knowing his mom would make him feed it to the pigs, and that he'd be able to leave some for Katness. He also knew he'd get beaten for it, which he was.

Rue’s death will always be one of the saddest moments in hunger games. I cried my eyes out when I read it and when I saw it. You can feel the pain and guilt in Katniss, holding this innocent child who never should’ve been there, none of them should, and watching her slip away. And then when Katniss put flowers on her body, it made everyone realize, hey these are kids and this is wrong. Rue was the start of Katniss’s flame for the rebellion.

Glad you reacted to this movie, I wondering when you would. I also was wondering how you’d react to Cato (the skilled and crazy white boy). The fact that you were in the US Army, I KNOW for a fact that you came across gung-ho dudes like Cato during your service. LOL 😂

U are so WRONG about Petta. Petta figured out quickly how to play the game. He uses his strongest weapons, his mind and personality. Petta is smart, kind and thoughtful. Everything he do is strategic and use for the good of someone else other than himself. My advice when watching these movies, try looking past the surface.

Great movie and another great reaction. I can't wait til the next one. One suggestion: If you could turn the volume on the movie up more and turn your volume on your microphone down that would be better. I could barely hear the movie and then when you spoke I had to turn it down. I love your excitement but my eardrums didn't lol

By keeping the districts fighting each other in the Games, the Capitol keeps them from unifying in a revolution. It also tells the districts "you're screwed, we can MAKE you send your kids to get killed and there's nothing you can do about it - so surrender and OBEY".

They don't fight back because they don't have the right nor the money to bear or own arms. This is the reason its important to not allow only folks in power to have and control weaponry.

By the way if you want to look up who plays Effie trinket online her name is Elizabeth Banks and Blakely I've been seeing her in oil of Olay commercials she's actually quite pretty she took a major downgrade playing Effie butt cheeks in mind when she was like in this movie as you move on in the series she grows up a lot in this series
