Please don’t be so judgmental of Haymitch. He is fucking traumatized. My guy won the hunger games in a year with DOUBLE the tributes (so 48 instead of 24) and had to mentor and watch two tributes from district 12 for years, each time knowing they had no chance of winning. No matter what he said to them. He is depressed as fuck and I don’t blame him. He has to watch kids go through the same trauma he went to and also die. That’s gonna fuck you up.

@franzessie9697 honestly I think the movies did a good job of taking us on this journey through katniss' eyes. We rarely see stuff from a different perspective. Remember katniss didn't like haymitch much either until CF. You start off trusting no one just hoping katniss can survive and by the end of the trilogy you realize there are good people that she can trust to fight the system. Most of the things missed were exposition that is hard to translate in a movie. By the end of the trilogy I think you can better see the whole picture so when you go back and watch it you can understand motivations more

In the books, you find out that tributes from Districts 1 and 2 actually train their entire lives and volunteer to go into the arena because they see it as an honor and a way of gaining fame/glory. So when the Career Pack is cheering while chasing after Katniss, they fully see it as a fun sort of cat-and-mouse game. They’ve had so many years of victors coming from their districts that I don’t think they really fear the reality of what the Games mean.

So the story with the bread actually is very important. Peta family own a bakery and he was supposed to throw the burn bread out for pigs, but he saw Katniss, pretty much dying bc she and her family didn't have food at all for a few days in a row. He basically save her life there but his mother beat him for it 😭 And Peta seems like a bad player coz he soft and stuff, but he's actually pretty smart and play amazing game by playing at people emotions and manipulate them as he want. He's the goat Also books are so much darker then the films. Like for example Peta loses his leg at the end of the games and Katniss loses her hearing in one ear.

The reason Gale's name is entered so many times is because his family is so poor, they have to use the system called tessera. The capital set it up to target the poorest people in the poorest districts. Basically a child will enter their name one extra time a year in order to get grain and oil to feed one person in their family. You could put your name in for every member of your family. In the books they talk about Katniss putting her name in three times every year since she was 12, for herself, her mother, and for Prim, so the family could eat. Gale did the same to feed his family. She had 20 entries at 16 and he had 42 at 18.

They train in their districts for the games before they enter and then when they are lethal with their chosen weapons they volounteer for the games and they are basically brainwashed to think that killing is fun and that the games are just a competition to bring honor and riches to their districts and not a death game. The system is mentioned very quickly in the movies, but not fully explained. We know that your name can be in many times, and Katniss tells Prim not to buy food with more name tickets in there. But it's glossed over imo. So, your name goes in once the first year you have to take part. Then twice the second year you take part. Basically every previous entry stays. You can also buy a year's worth of oil and grain, but you have to put your name in one extra time. You can get food for family members too, and every year supply is one more ticket. So say you have three siblings and two parents, that's 6 extra tickets to feed the entire family, every year. And those entries stay with you too. So that would make it 7 tickets your first year, (1 for the year, and 6 for food), but 14 for the year after, (the 7 from the previous year, the 1 from this year's entry, and 6 for food). The third year means you have the previous 14, plus a new one for that year and another 6 for the food. So the poorest families who need the food the most will have to put their children's lives at risk to be able to eat. And kids with a lot of siblings might have to put their name in a lot of times for food. It's not really been explained in the movie yet, but Haymitch is the only person from district 12 who won. He's super traumatised from having to be in the games, and he has to mentor two kids every year, and watch them die. Basically reliving his own trauma in the process. The career tributes are as much a victim of the whole system as Katniss. They are just lead to believe it's a great thing to be reaped or volunteer and it's super cool to die for their district. They're trained their whole lives, they don't really know anything else.

From the wiki on why their names are in more than once. Once of age at twelve years old, a potential tribute's name was entered into the reaping one time. The entries were cumulative with each passing year, so when a possible tribute was thirteen, their name was added one more time and again at fourteen and so on. This continued until age eighteen, when a potential tribute's name was entered seven times. For the residents of the various districts, any child between the ages of 12 through 18 could apply for tesserae. This supplied them with a year's supply of grain and oil. They could choose to do this for each of their family members as well. However, each tesserae they signed up for put another slip with their name in the reaping ball, which was also cumulative for each year they applied for tesserae. As such, sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen had her name put in the glass ball twenty times, having applied for herself as well as her sister and mother for five years since the age of 12. Similarly, Gale Hawthorne, who had five family members including himself, did the same for seven years and thus had his name put in the glass ball forty-two times. The amount of tesserae taken was larger in Panem's poorer districts, such as District 12 and 11, but much rarer in the more affluent district of 1, 2, and 4.

I hope it's not a spoiler or yes, but in my opinion the team of Kat and Peeta complement each other well, Peta is excellent at dealing and fighting with politics, while Kat is an expert in combat. Soooo Slay 💋

I read the books in high school, in fact the first book was part of the English Curriculum, where they divided the class into the districts and you earn points through getting top marks, various challenges like seeing who could throw a paper airplane the farthest, a general trivia contest about random history, science, geography etc. I won the contest for my team since I have terrific recall skills to retrieve information like the population of another city in Canada down to the 1000 since I read somewhere once before. I earned alot of points for that and I got the biggest bonus for having the most detailed and accurate timeline of the events of the book, down to who died on which days etc. My district one and our reward was that at the end of the novel study part of the course, we had a party and got first selection of the snack food. We also got to see the movies on release day in movie theaters. From book to movie adaptation, it was pretty good though but Peeta definently does not quite match the personality and cleverness he had in the books. The funny thing is one day I left the first book at home by mistake and my mom read the first few chapters and then bought me the whole book series that day since she knew I loved reading and found the premise engaging. My favorite book series(Percy Javkson) had God awful adaptation for the two films it got. The only thing that the first film got right was the character names, they made up their own plot with the only similarity was that they end up in Los Angeles towards the end. They also killed the main rival in the first movie but he is alive and working against the protagonists for all 5 books.

The reason Hamitch was so reluctant to help them was because since district 12s tributes never make it out of life. He doesn’t want to connect with them so when he sees them die, he won’t be as sad.

I’m also really excited for the new one, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, coming out in November. The book was amazing and Francis Lawrence (who directed Catching Fire and Mockingjay Part 1 & 2) is directing it so I think it gonna be brilliant 😁😁

They made a few cuts from the books in the adaptation. One notable thing was how much more the environment and animals were there to fuck with the tributes. The game makers were able to literally control the weather. Often times it would endlessly rain on the tributes, there were more environmental hazards, and more of the hybrid animals, like the mocking jays and tracker jackers. Along the animal line of thought, in the books, there were 9 dogs that showed up initially that all had the district numbers on their collars. When Katniss looked into one of the dogs' eyes, she said she could swear they were Rue's eyes. She then thinks how the losers were sent home in pine boxes, but they were always nailed shut.

It's so weird that you would choose this because I JUST watched all four films for the first time last week (over four nights) mainly because all four had turned up on NetFlix at the same time, which is kinda rare so I jumped at it. Re-watching it again with you so soon afterward is a great way to sum up the whole experience (the same way it was with "Wednesday") so I'm hoping you do the other three as well.

Funny fact but the guy who plays Cato auditioned to be Peeta but lost out to Josh Hutcherson. It's not super surprising since out of the main three, I think Josh was the most mainstream actor for the YA age group at the time since he's a child star.. Before this, Jennifer was mostly in indies and while she got critical acclaim, ,most people outside of the film world didn't really know her. She also did XMen First Class but she got this role while she was filming for XMen and at the time she was more highly anticipated for this movie.

Okokok. Your cutaways and edits and sound clips are the absolute best. I just subscribed, but I’ve watched quite a few vids in the past week. Enamored and addicted. Then I realized the source of one category of sounds clips on this vid that made it all make sense… Sicario has one of the sickest sound cues/scores of any movie (series) I’ve ever heard. And you’ve incorporated it perfectly with your sense of humor. And it’s awesome, luv. As are you. Cheers from Detroit, MI. And Happy Holiday’s to you.

Peeta does seem a little sketchy at first but thinking of the Hunger Games as a reality tv competition makes it make a LOT more sense. Survival skills help but the audience need more than that before they'll 'call x number to vote', so Peeta inventing a romance plotline for sponsors to buy into combined with Katniss' skills would do a lot for 12's overall chances (and by 12 I mean pretty much just Katniss lmao, Haymitch and Peeta were both plenty willing to sacrifice Peeta for her sake)
