Creating Abstract Art Using an Intuitive Painting Process | Watercolors and Mixed Media | 2024 - 3

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What is intuition and more importantly, what does it mean to create intuitively? In this week’s video, I explore this topic and then I move on to creating a little series experimental little painting using what I consider my intuitive creative process. I’d love to invite you to join in the fun, create your own little painting or series of paintings while exploring this subject and what it means to you. Happy creating!

I sometimes think many people are simply afraid of intuition. It can not be domesticated, caged, controlled, locked away. This scares the daylight out of some. Intuition also has something of the divine. And that's probably the pinnacle of being uncontrollable... Important video. Thank you!

What you say is so true! ❤️ Intuition is so misunderstood and sometimes what we cannot understand or explain with logic is dismissed or thought to be "bad" in some way. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on intuition ☺️ And thank you for being so kind and supportive of me (here and in other comment streams 😉💕). Your kindness is a gift I value 🤗

Intuition is definitely an important part of artistic expression. I feel art really does feed and help our higher mind express itself and develop. When we talk about getting into the flow is where you have tapped into your intuitive higher mind and that part of you is open and working

I always paint using artist intuition. Especially when my painting is going sideways. In many cases I start painting a flower but end up painting a landscape or abstract. Those are the paintings that usually come out the best. My art professor in college used to call them “happy accidents”. You just let your inner artistic child run wild.

Thank you for speaking to us about intuition. I am normally a very intuitive person, until you start painting. I keep telling you to stop it's perfect, and you keep painting, the painting becomes more beautiful I say stop and on it goes. You get the picture. When I think your work can't be more pleasing it WOWS me. Thank you.

My favourite parts of your videos are your hesitation to commit to a mark (which to me is a reminder that you are listening to your intuition), and the anticipation when you set down the circle template. I often hit pause at that point and ask myself 'which circle would I commit to making??', and then am delighted to see which one you choose, and if I chose the same it is so gratifying! I tend to go back over my previous sketches to check in with my creative process and see if there are things I would do differently today. Thank you for your videos and your perspective. I always learn something new and that's what it's all about, right?? :)

Wonderful explanation! I personally feel that intuition comes from the higher mind, not necessarily the body. All the experiences that we’ve had in this life and in past lives is all there and if we get in touch with stillness and silence, we can be in touch with that intuition and inner knowledge and love, that is inside each of us. It was so nice to see your face. You are very sweet and I love your smile and I love your honesty. And thank you for your encouragement of my work. All the best.

You are spot on with intuition. Played around with different things throughout my life and was told I was no good as an artist. I quit listening to that and started painting at 73 years old. I'm now 75 and loving my journey. It adds to my life so greatly. I don't have the background or the training to do all that I would like to do. I fell right in with intuitive painting and abstract art. I like the learning part and I'm embracing it as I grow in my talents. And I still go back to---I am intuitive Painter doing abstract art. Thank you so much for the encouragement. You are a blessing.

🥲❤️ And you are a blessing to me! 💕 There is so much to love about what you wrote and I literally got happy tears in my eyes and chills up and down my body reading about you taking back your creativity. No one knows our art better than we know it ourselves and yay for us giving ourselves the space to do what we love. I believe people judge because they carry their own wounds about their own creativity and maybe in some awkward way, they are trying to offer us guidance (misguidance in fact 😉). There is so much wisdom in following the call of our own heart and doing what we love to do despite what others think. Thank you so much for making the time to connect with me and share this part of your journey with me. It means a lot to me that you are here 🤗💕

For me, starting completely intuitively is like priming the pump for a more intentional form of creativity. Intuition is always engaged in the process from start to finish, but it usually guides me to a more intentional creative momentum, if that makes any sense.

💕 Merci beaucoup de prendre le temps de me faire ton partage! yr results make me think of Stephen covey, start with the end in mind...which seems counterintuitive...yet...yr knowing, creative sparks light up each sesh...beyond knowledge, nonlinear, even as tools we use are made knowledgeably... by following along (Prussian blue & burnt sienna), ii noticed how my brush 'took over', yr voice like a meditation, a permission to play...last year ii invested in tools artists recommended & applied them...seeing progress without judgment is motivating even though ii still trip over old hurtful mental scenarios...this year of no-buy (except refills) & undoing comparanoia, & only engaging with joyful creative's like you, makes this journey worthwhile...ty.

I LOVE how your painting turned out. I will not lie, when you were working in a square, I knew EXACTLY what I would do and, you totally went another direction! My intuitiveness was in another dimension and, that's ok!! In high school, I used to doodle squares like Zentangle and my own neuropathic art. At that time, I was creating intuitively and now, it has progressed and I'm just enjoying the flow of it and I do walk away for a day or 2 if all of a sudden the flow has stopped. You described intuitive feelings very clearly and I liked the idea of a pool of experiences and knowledge for sifting through without rational processes getting in the way. Hi Bernice 💕🤗 Ah that blank piece of paper can be daunting indeed! That's why almost literally force myself to put that first layer of light color on the paper so I can get the process started. ☺️ Pick some colors and just promise yourself to play and have fun making some discoveries! I believe this will help release some of that pressure we feel from having to create a certain outcome. Whenever I hear myself say I'm going to try, I hear Yoda's voice saying: "Do or do not. There is no try!" 😂 Then I giggle and I remember to keep moving forward. It's by doing that we learn and discover all the ways we are capable. Sending lots of love and great big cheers your way! 💕🎉 You've got this sweet friend! xoxo

Thank you Gabrielle. I have learned so much about intuitive painting from you. Before that I was very much into photography and was not always pleased with my results. I always felt there was something missing and now I realise it was because photography is so 'mechanical' and you have to get the settings right to achieve a good picture. With art now I can just be creative more by using my intuition. I find a few of my photography fiends look at my art now and they just don't get it! They have no concept of being intuitive.

Hi Julie ❤️🤗 Thank you so much for making the time to connect with me like this and share part of your journey 💕 I imagine it was a typo when you wrote "photography fiends", but the little "Freudian" slip was at least a little fitting 😉 (Everyone seems to be an art critic, but not everyone is an artist interestingly enough.) My friends and family don't always get my art either 😂 And though this stings a little, I remind myself it's not as important for them to get it as it is for me to get it. ☺️ It seems you've made peace with this too and that's a good thing. When I concern myself too much with what other people think, creating is so much less fun for me. I just don't feel it the way I want to feel it. You know your magic lies in your intuition and that's a beautiful thing 💕

Hello my friend, I love seeing your sweet smiling face! I always enjoy it when you do these types of paintings! I want to do another one, and I need to remember to treat each square as it's own little painting! 🎨 I've been pondering the thought about intuitive art. As you know I paint and I also make cards. I never go into a project with anything in mind, or knowing what I'm going to do. Every year I make snowflake Christmas cards, I make each one individually and unique. I take way too long pondering options to make them "perfect." Is that being intuitive just because I start with no plan? I don't usually start painting knowing what I'm painting other than maybe it will be an abstract, or geometric in some way, or leaves and flowers. So in that way I am intuitive, I suppose, but I don't usually make the next step, without thinking it through (which I think would be being intuitive). I love abstract painting, I pick colors I want to use and then I just start dropping in paint and water with no starting plan. When I make marks, I think about it, instead of just doing it. So my question to you is, do I paint/create intuitively? I honestly don't know. 🤔 I don't think I do, because I don't just let go and do whatever comes to mind right then. 🤷‍♀️ Your last note to me sounded very hopeful, and that you've got a great team taking care of you! 🙌 You've still got struggles ahead, but are doing everything you can to help yourself! Thank God that we have our art as a distraction and a source of joy! Have a good week my friend! Stay warm (how much snow do you have?), I love you 🤗💕 and happy creating! 😊

Hi Lori 🤗💕 It's always so much fun to read your comments and connect with you!! I do think you are very intuitive and then (like me) you are a perfectionist who might get in your own way at times 😉 I say this because the call to perfection meets me in almost every creative process and this is usually when I stall, sometimes (often) procrastinate and start overthinking my process. 😂 There's not necessarily anything wrong with that except that for me, it usually means my process flows less and is far less relaxing. I'll even notice that when I'm not in my flow, I have what feels like a death grip on my pens and brushes - like I'm getting ready to use them to defend my creative honor or something 🤣 When I realize this, I also come to terms with the fact that by not relaxing and letting my process flow more intuitively, I may actually be making some of the physical issues I'm dealing with worse. Hopefully this is not the case for you my sweet friend! 🤗 So, for me, painting intuitively is also about releasing the need to achieve specific results. It's letting go and accepting what chooses to come as exactly what my painting and my body need. In a way, painting intuitively is also my body's way of telling my intuition that I am ready to hear its messages not just in my creative life, but also in my life as a whole. The more I do this, the stronger my intuition becomes. As you know, it's so easy for me to overthink and get myself into trouble in doing so (hence why depression played a major role in my life for so many years). Please know that whether or not you paint intuitively doesn't matter nearly as much as if the process relaxes you and is enjoyable to you. There is no better way to be or to do things. We all have our own magic to bring to the process. 🥰 I'm just hoping to share some of the ways I make the process more free, fun and relaxing for myself in the hopes that it might also do the same for someone else. OH!!!! And, when you sit there (like me 😉) and stare at your paint moving on your paper - whether that is intuitive or not, it is definitely mindful and there's a world of good happening in these beautiful moments 💕 Thank you so much for thinking of me and cheering me on as I continue to make progress on my health issues. It is definitely a journey I still have far to travel on and with each and every little progressive step I make, I definitely feel hopeful and thankful for the health I have. 🙏🏿❤️✨ I appreciate you so much!! Every week, I feel like we could be having tea together and chatting - I love it! And I love you!! Wishing you a wonderful, blissfully creative week 💕🤗

In my husbands culture (Lakota) they talk a lot about “right brain and left brain” ways of thinking and viewing the outer world. They mostly use the right brain which is the creative part of the brain and a way to look at things WHOLISTICALLY. The way they see and interpret everything comes from that way of viewing. To see “the bigger picture” and all parts of it. The rest of us have been programmed out of this way of thinking and now look at the world and situations with our left brain, which is the logical, reasoning side. It is interesting. To myself, intuition is a feeling in my solar plexus. It’s more like a message I get. So, being able to use the right part of my brain when I create is very difficult for me. Plus I was raised by a father who was extremely left brained and that is how we were trained. Only rarely do I get “into the flow” which is kind of like a runners high, or 2nd wind, to me. It is where I have disconnected my brain from my hands. HOWEVER I want to be able to do this much more than I do. I understand everything you said, but is there a way to verbalize how another person does it❓❓❓. Is that possible❓❓❓. Should I go back and listen to your talk again❓❓❓. Some people I’ve watched say playing music, a podcast, talking on the phone or watching tv helps get them into intuivity. I’m at a loss and I would love to hear more. Since I’m more logical minded, I tend to feel like I have to have a step by step plan to accomplish what I want. And I realize it doesn’t work that way every time‼️‼️. Thanks for this very interesting information.

Hi Lynn ❤️🤗 Oh how I love this whole comment / conversation!!! There is so much food for thought here! I am highly intuitive and yet, I grew up being praised not for my intuition, but for my ability to "think well". The parts of me that were more intuitive and creative were seldom recognized and even at times shunned. I really get what you're saying in so many ways. I think there's a road to get to where you want to become more intuitive and it may not be as tricky as you think. I really appreciate what you shared also about your husband's Lakota culture. I love this approach to viewing the world. He may be able to offer you some guidance. And then I think also: you do you because no one can do you better than you. 💕 I really believe it's already in you, it just may need more practice to connect with your intuition if that's something you really want to to. Remember that you're very much a part of this world and connected to everything and every one. Sometimes, even though the world is beautiful, it can also be loud and make it harder for us to hear our inner guidance. For this reason, I personally feel that it's more about finding stillness and quiet so you can with your inner voice (the one that doesn't come from your head but more so from your heart and soul. For me, this voice is generally more gentle, encouraging and quiet and it never rambles on. My mind tends to be more chatty and judgy for instance. 😉) I don't know you so I'm not sure this will connect with you or not, but I'm a people pleaser in rehab. 😂 I'm also highly empathic and easily pick up on other people's wants and needs (sometimes more than my own). I've had to learn to differentiate, recognize and feed my needs because I grew up being taught (sadly) that my needs had to come last. If you identify with any of this, maybe there's a little trail of breadcrumbs for you to follow here too. If not, I apologize for rambling about something not relevant to you. Anyway, I guess one last thing I could mention is just let it happen naturally. Sit quietly with your artwork. Ask yourself questions as you're creating. Listen for the gentle voice inside you that is encouraging you and telling you what you appreciate about your process. (When your inner critic or judgement shows up, that's usually your mind trying to find ways to stop/protect you from doing something that may have wounded you in the past.) Listening to you intuition can't be forced and the more you practice "hearing" your nudges and respond, the more they become obvious and frequent. And if it doesn't happen yet when you are creative, find the quiet spaces in your life where you feel connected to the natural world or the people you love. Oh my, I could go on and on! But, most importantly what do you think is preventing you from connecting with your intuition? Have you asked yourself the questions you asked here? No matter what shows up, know that there is no preferred way of being. We are all different and all beautiful just the same. My way of doing things is just another way of creating and I connect with it but that doesn't mean it's for every one or the best way to create. The best way to create is the way that gets you doing it. ☺️ And just as an FYI, my husband is a total planner and I am madly in love with him 🥰😉 I hope this helps somehow! Thank you so much for making the time to ask you questions and connect with me on this topic!! I appreciate you being here!!❤️🤗

Oh goodness! I'm rereading your comment and I feel like you already get it (right brain or not)!! My intuition is very much like you describe - a feeling from my gut ( solar plexus area) and a message that I get. That runners high or feeling of being in the flow you talk about, for me that's just being fully present in the moment, completely enthralled by what is happening in my painting process and not thinking about anything else. ☺️ Plan if this feels more comfortable to you because there is nothing wrong with doing that!! And at the same time, connect with the messages from your solar plexus if the plan start to fall apart - intuition can also be about recognizing when things aren't going the way you'd like and going to the plan B your gut is nudging you to follow. If we could go out for tea, I'm sure we could chat about this for hours. 😂 We may have more in common that you might think!! 🤗 (I'm definitely approaching your questions and comments from my left brain 😂 - but hey, we need that too! Don't we?!)
