CRAZY 10+ DISHES in Indonesian Rice Table (Rijsttafel) in The Hague (Den Haag) in The Netherlands

I was so excited to visit The Netherlands and The Hague for the first time around the US Thanksgiving period in late November 2019. As an Asian person, I love rice and I love curries.
So when I heard about the idea of the Indonesian Rice Table (rijsttafel) in The Netherlands, I naturally wanted in. Indonesia was once a Dutch Colony, and while that is mostly a horrible thing for locals in Indonesia, one good thing that has come from that is all the amazing things that happen with food, fusion cooking, and appreciation for different delicacies of another culture.
So now a couple of centuries later, the Rijsttafel (Rice Table) is a super popular thing for modern Dutch people to eat with spouses, dates, groups of friends, or families. And awesomely, the spicier the better for many of them.
According to Wikipedia; Rijsttafel is an Indonesian elaborate meal adapted by the Dutch following the hidang presentation of nasi Padang from the Padang region of West Sumatra. It consists of many (forty is not an unusual number) side dishes served in small portions, accompanied by rice prepared in several different ways.
So we took a day trip to The Hague (most famous for things like the International Criminal Court for War Crimes) and had an amazing Rijstaffel at Garoeda Restaurant.

    Every year, I travel to the Netherlands, and I always set aside a time for a leisurely rijstael. I also enjoy lager beer with the meal.

    A lot of people like beef rendang, fried rice with fried eggs, chicken on skewers with peanut sauce. The saffron rice in Indonesia, we cook it with turmeric to get the orange or yellow color. Netherland also has a lot of Indonesians. Next time you should try nasi Padang (Sumatra), Ayam kalasan (East Java), bak mi Medan (Sumatra), es tèlèr, Soto betwixt (Jakarta) and menadonese food (South of Sulawisi cuisine)

    @@YvonnemeetsFood Luckily I am quite good at cooking it myself, I was a chef long ago... The fermented shrimp paste is called trassi and is a key ingredient! Smells like hell when you cook it, but tastes like heaven!

    I agree that an Indonesian Rijs Tafel is delicious and can’t understand why it hasn’t caught on in the States, similarly to Thai and Indian food have.

    I am originally from Texas, and my mother made what I now know to be ristaffel, but would she called "curried chicken". How this dish traveled from the West Indies to the vast plains around Amarillo, Texas, is a mystery. But, it has become our families favorite birthday celebration dish. We always had chopped green scallions, crushed peanuts, toasted coconut, chopped tomatoes, Indian chutneys of several flavors, chopped fried bacon, chopped eggs were the whites were chopped together and the yolks put on top so that it look like a fried egg and a bowl, white rice, and simmered chicken breast shredded into a bright yellow curry powder flavored gravy. I know that my mother learned this dish from one of the other women in her circle, but I did not know that every family didn't eat it. Whenever we had company for one of us kids this would be the dish we would often prepare. It was so loved that it was the first dish I learned to cook, and now at age 66, I still make this several times a year for birthdays and other celebrations. I have since learned about how many side dishes there are actually available for this meal. Literally, you can find dozens of things to add at the table. The history of this meal is one of Dutch pride in the things that they achieved in the West Indies, and it is delicious. This particular meal the poster is eating looks even better than anything my mother ever thought to make. Thank you so much for sharing this! I think I'll go home and make it tonight!

    i think it is a turmeric rice instead of saffron, because we don’t use saffron in indonesian cooking, anyway really good video!

    The only reason I would go to these areas would be for the Indonesian food. My mother was the greatest cook I had ever known and they way she cooked their food to me it is better than Thai or Cinese.

    We wanted to impress our visitors with food, and brought back from indonesia, it was never indonesian, it is even dutch invention, and yes the spices are from indonesia so that it is combined from both countries

    That is not saffron rice. It's Nasi Kunyit or Tumeric rice.

    It's called nasi kuning in Indonesian or (fragrant) yellow rice. It has indeed tumeric (kunyit in Indonesian) in it. I love nasi kuning too.

    Really liked your video. The dish (rijsttafel) though had some elements in it which should not be presented as they were (in my opinion). Overcooked long beans (Sambal Goreng Buncis) and way to much fat left on the beef (probably Rendang).... The Sayur Lodeh (the vegetables in coconutsauce) looks very poor to me (cheap ingredients). As in many countries in Europe some restaurants entertain less and less customers so they have to cut back on good quality ingredients. There is simply no profit to be made when the original (high) standards are maintained.
