I would recommend adding the spice pack AFTER you skim the scum off the surface. If you don't, the floating spices get trapped in the scum and you will also remove the spices and lose a lot of flavor.
This is the kind of video I appreciate. Not 20 minutes long with multiple unnecessary steps to this easy meal. Right to the point!
Blessings celebrating St Patrick's Day here in Spring Valley NY. I'm 62 African American female-(lol). My mom cooked corn beef but like basic pot roast)brown gravy)- as young adult surrounded by many cultures and being nurse at traditional Catholic Hospital I was introduced to the dish- also as a little girl I marched wth my Girl Scout troop in the annual parades. Church Pastor cooked this dish every year for the parishioners and community; that's St Charles AME Zion in Sparkill NY.-( it was apart of the underground railroad.- anyway, for Several years I picked up the tradition and would cook this meal for my neighbors. During my lengthy adventure with covid, I thank God for full recovery. I have picked up the mantle once again. Be Blessed, spread love and joy wherever you can. God is still watching over us❤🔥
Excerpt from my post blog today: "...I actually think it's terribly unfair that so many people believe the stereotype that all Irish people are heavy drinkers. It's just not true - I know hundreds of Irish folks, and several of them don't have a drinking problem." ;-)

Hi hi Chef John! I got the Guinnesses on hand. 1 for the beef, the rest to go with. (Mostly) planning your recipe, ‘cause who else? Cheers Chef John 🍻 :))

I have had the most terrible day! Looked up a corned beef and cabbage recipe from chef John and BOOM! My day instantly transformed! When you said “if you’re drunk, that’s quarters cut in half”. I laughed out loud and my day was made! Thanks Chef John!

OMG! Fantastic! Have NEVER made this in my life, but followed your recipe to the T. My husband even liked it. I have always eaten out on St. Patrick's, but have NOT been happy. This is the BEST corned beef & cabbage I've ever had!! Thanks John, love your little bits of wit. You're my #1 chef online.

I made this last night for St. Patrick's day and I can honestly say this is the best corned beef and cabbage I have ever had. I completely gorged myself on it last night and now I'm having it for breakfast. I had to slightly modify the recipe because I used a LARGE cabbage and a smaller Brisket, so naturally I needed more salt and seasonings, I added 2 cloves of garlic, a dash of accent(msg), loads more salt and lots of fresh ground black pepper. I served it with a dab of butter on top and more salt. Delicious!
I make this recipe at least every St. Paddy's Day and it's always so delicious! Everyone eagerly awaits for it!! Thanks Chef John, it's a winner!
I love Chef John, he is and has always been my go to for most recipes. No matter how many times I've seen this I still come back to watch a few days before making, and I have to watch again while I'm cooking lol 😂 You can count on good flavor he does not let down
It's fun to find Chef John videos less cadence but same format and humor, easy on expectations and love them all. As with recipe videos from those like him producing steadily over a long time -- and me lucky to survive at my job to sustain what I've loved doing so far for 25yrs -- start off straightforward and develop that cadence, that swagger, proliferating joy from successive accomplishment built from unique bricks of experience. Then you find out you've had followers, fans and competition -- and somehow evolve even further. As far as instructional videos go I'm glad Chef John's Foodwishes format has been consistent. And thank you to remind me of myself.
My grandma Betty used to make this every summer and it is one of my fondest food memories from her . . . never made it myself, but now I will!
I just love Chef John's Video's easy to listen to and always with a touch of humor. Thanks for doing these, I've made several of you recipes and they have always been great.
Made this a day late, still tastes good made on March 18th. Used some of the meat to make your Reuben dip which was a hit at our bbq. Whenever I need a recipe, you are my go to man for good food and humor.
Thank you! Best simple vid on the subject I've seen.
Thanks for this simple recipe. My mouth is watering. We're making it this Sunday for Paddy's Day. But the Irish did do something similar. I smelled cabbage in many houses when I lived there.Too much usually.
Chef John, you and Harry’s Garage are the best KZread channels ever and by far! Thanks
Made this yesterday, and it was great. Only change, I omitted the extra added salt to the water. Didn't miss it at all. Tks Chef John! I forgot to add the seasoning packet after skimming the scum off (which wasn't in the video but do it normally) So I put a small sieve over a measuring cup and put the skimmed liquid in that, then rinsed the spices off to add back into the pot. Worked like a charm.
One of my favorite meals at anytime. You cook your corned beef the same way my mom cooked it. She always added an additional 30-45 minutes on the beef. Yummy yummy!!
I love the simplicity. Thank you.
Thank you, I got your recipe and pointers before having my Mom over for dinner today. Mom usually does it, but being 90 years of age she handed the job over to me. First time I ever cooked the St. Patrick's day meal, came out delicious and tender. Couldn't have done it without your instructions. Love -"You tube."
Love watching these older videos from chef john and seeing how his style has changed slightly over the years but is basically exactly the same as it is now.
I can't watch this without drooling everywhere.
this dish always warms my heart, growing up i felt it connected me to my homeland, and while it wasnt made in ireland, it was made by irish immigrants in america and canada inspired by their traditional cooking. its like comparing american pasta and pizza dishes to italian ones, theyre both unique but both equally authentic in my personal opinion!
I used this method/recipe again and it turned out great again. Thanks again, will use again.
I'm so hungry!!!! Good thing we are making corn beef and cabbage right now! Have a good Friday night everyone!
This is still the best recipe I've found simple on point and oh so awesome been using this recipe for 3 years now I believe
John, this is great! You really simplify the process.
Bless you, Chef John!
This is the best I've ever had. So simple. Thank you.
Love this video I come back to it every year cause I always forget. Chef John the man!!!!!!
I still use this recipe to this day thank you chef John
When in doubt. Always go to Food Wishes! Thank you!
Love this recipe. Simple and perfect.
Am making this for our VFW St Patty's day meal.... CJ if it doesnt go right, Ill hold you responsible!.... Your receipes have been spot on so far... you seem to be able even to teach and old vet to cook.....Thanks
I make this every year! I buy a couple more corn beef and freeze them because sometimes I craving it. Someone gave a great tip about adding season packet AFTER you skim off the scum. I add a little butter when I add cabbage. We eat ours with prepared horseradish and put extra pepper when serving.
This is still the best recipe I've found so far! It's Soooooo Good !!! 😊👍 👍😁
I gave your channel a mention during my live video cast last night. I've learned how to cook things that had eluded me for years, like your corned beef video. Thanks.
I am so drooling right now. Thanks for sharing 😊
My momma used to make this for my dad. One of his favorite meals and mine too! I cook white rice and cornbread as sides and call it "My Black Irish Feast".
I LOVE LOVE LOVE 💘 simple recipes best!
Loved your video and humour!
AHHH! This reminds me of my Grandmother from Asheville home cooking, she is french, Irish, and english. BEST COOK EVER!
Like your style fun ,dry humor , you rock this!
Always loved corned beef and cabbage. One of my favorire meals. Haven't had it for a while. Think i'll cook it during the middle of the week. Thanks for the recipe.
Nice recipe, easy to prepare! Yummy and Happy St. Patrick's Day.
Love you in the kitchen, you are so much fun and you make very good meals. Grateful subscriber.
I made this - it is SO good. Next time I’ll wait until the three-hour point to put the potatoes, onion, and carrots in as they were a bit overcooked. So good though. You’re my favorite chef by far. Thanks for the recipe.
Top of the morning to you ☘️ Thank you, I have been making this recipe since I was 17 years old for my Cuban family in New York City to celebrate St.Patrick’s day - but I never used celery, I’ll try this year 🍀
Thanks for a great video Chef! Short and to the point just the way I like it. Looks delicious by the way!
The best easy recipe EVER!!!!
Just made this today it is amazing different then what I usually do but I like this one better. Thanks!!
That drunk joke made me subscribe.
my ultimate favorite meal !!! making it tonight yum !!!
I am making this as we speak. I am sure it will turn out amazing which is typical for you chef john. Thanks for the recipe!
I ❤️your videos they are to the point and simple and delicious thank you
I've been waiting for you to make this dish, looks delicious. Love Corned Beef and Cabbage
Just made this yesterday - 2 issues... We put the onions, carrots and celery in at the start like was shown in the video. By the time this was done there were no carrots or celery left. They had cooked to mush and just disappeared. They should be put in at the same time as the potatoes. Next - make sure to read the package that your Corned Beef comes in. We drained and rinsed the beef as recommended in the video, but it was recommended that it be used with all the juices as it comes out of the package without rinsing. We ended up washing off a lot of seasoning and flavor. Chef John used a flat cut in the video. We used a point cut (it was all I could find) and it was thinner and cooked faster. It also had a lot of fat. It cooked down to about 1/2 the size we started with and the liquid was very greasy. I recommend using the flat cut. YMMV! Enjoy.

Chef John = Greatest....should have a TV show. I'd actually buy cable to watch him
I was resting my corned beef and my cat jumped on the counter and stole the corned beef. He left me 2/3's of it. And I was lucky to get that. He growled at me... LOL

this looks great. thanks for your videos. i love them.
It's a simple video/recipe but I still look up this video every year lol
I cook it for the first time last night using this receipt. Man was it good turn out prefect , The only thing I can add is he said let the meat rest for 15 min. Be careful, When I set my cook corn beef on cutting board to let it rest after cooking, after 10 mins it look like it was trying to dry out real fast. So I went ahead and cut off a few slices and put the corn beef back into the pot with the stock liquid with the cabbage to keep it from drying out..... Thank you for a great receipt really is a great one and I will cook it again using this receipt.
been looking for a great recipe for this!!!
The way John says "corned beef scum" makes me laugh. lol. Great vid
I used to have a Nice Irish Dish whenever I wanted, then she found someone else. much to my sorrow
This recipe is adorable
As always, I most certainly enjoyed!
Nice job! Yum!
Made this on Sunday with a loaf of soda bread (I had a 3 pound roast). The beef was like buttah and everything was so tender and tasty! This is one dish where leftovers are the best - lunch for a couple of days.
great stuff, love the commentary in this one
Making this tonight! Labour day classic!
Did this last night and it came out perfect. The 3 hours did the job 👍🏻
ahhhh!!! i live in italy now for almost 2 years. that's 2 years without this!! i loved how my mom and grandma would make it. i can't find good corned beef and i can't find the seasonings for it. :( it makes me sad. lol thanks for sharing though :)
