Corned Beef & Cabbage Shepherd’s Pie - Food Wishes
This St. Paddy’s Day themed recipe demonstrates my favorite version of corned beef and cabbage, and my favorite version of Shepherd’s Pie, which as you’ll see in the video are the very same thing. By the way, it’s okay to make it more than once a year. Enjoy!

“And to those potatoes, add a touch of butter” Butter truck starts beeping.
I'm a long-time fan of shepherds pie. I will definitely try this dish, and because it was made by Chef John, it's guaranteed to be good.

Shepard's pie is made with Lamb... ergo the "Shepard" bit. Cottage pie is made with beef. Though I wouldn't really call this a cottage pie either, since it has no gravy.

@@BenWillock Personally, I believe that Chef John has the right to name any of his original and geniusly genuine recipes anything that pleases him. His imagination is spellbinding. He saw what we all see and stepped it up, making something original and better than what it was, and now, we, who have tried it, all know is best. Such a conundrum to some that are still in the early stages of learning. Never before have so many known so little about so much! There are so very many words in the English Language can each have, and DO have, multiples of meanings. Then again, Ben, perhaps the word "shepherd" has several meanings, in itself. For instance, there are all kinds of flocks that are shepherded. Religious Leaders shepherd believers. Great Chefs shepherd Cooks to be good Cooks, and, even some to be Great Cooks. Chef John was first an Explorer; then a fine-tuner, in taking the time, and no doubt, repetitive stabs at it, Chef John's Corned Beef & Cabbage Shepherd's Pie is a very great meal, just ask anybody that has had both, the old version and the new. Chef John's imagination put to work, took something that we all love the way it was, and he made it good, then better, and then the BEST. He made it great, in fact! Ben, good, better, best. Never let it rest, until your good Is better, and your better is the best! Most obviously, Chef John is himself a shepherd of good Cooks, like me; and, he Shepherd's good recipes, fine tunes them, and makes them the BEST. "CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE" Shepherd's Pie is a perfect name, reinvented by the Inventor--the Genius, our Shepherd, Chef John.😍
I decided to try this recipe thinking it would be a fun diversion from my usual fare. What I got was one of the best things I've made in a very long time. Awsome.
The first time I made this my family was knocked out. I’ve now made this 2 more times, by request, and for one special occasion I doubled it. It was such a hit! Many thanks chef☘️
You're sure to be the apple of everyone's eye If you make this scrumptious shepherd's pie
I cooked my corned beef and the fixings on Sunday, March 14th. Today I made hash out of the remains. So good.
They do sell corned beef broth at the store... it's just some assembly required.
As a long time radio producer/host, my view of what makes these shorts enjoyable is the writing. The visual end is first rate, and his staying off-camera was a marvelous idea (not because of his looks of course), but keeping focus on the food. You could say he’s the Master of Knishes (recipe please?) with these Food Wishes. They pretty much stand as radio segments because of his writing for the ear, not the eye.
Never did I ever think Chef John would reference a Billie Eilish lyric in one of his videos

I'll raise up my pint-sized mug full'o'Ice, Bailey's Irish Cream, Vodka, and Leprechaun-sized, so as not to curdle, gulp o' Milk mixed in; and lend you a "Happy St. Patrick's Day Pic(on)nic(ky) Toast to You, Shadowfirekarp, and our most very creative, never-to-be tongue-tied, Devilishly Decadent, Chef Extraordinaire!" Although, my most usual out'o'doors, (not indoors), eventful Toast would be, (at a savory, eating and drinking gala event, such as this), a simply desperate and ostensibly loud, "Chairs!" I imagine, Just then, all eyes raise up from their enticing, gastronomically magnetic meals, only to spy young Erin-going-bra- less, bouncing down across from, (of all people), the likes'o'me! All of the juicey Corned Beef & Cabbage Savorers had their eyes fixed and agape, as young Erin-going- braless missed her aim at the tough-it, and flopped down hard on her duff, (with her bowl-full of Corned Beef & Cabbage, clenched so worriedly and dearly in her steady, youthful hands, that she nary spillt a droplet of its' one'o'a-kind, every time, juices. Erin's long, bare, practically hairless legs were just as crossed as my weary 65-year-old, eyes; that are situated in my very own, hard to remember myself being 14-years-old, noggin. It seems, when a very clever and image'ahh'belly tastey original recipe's Creator, cooks up his original, never thought-of before, ideas, he attracts not only adoring throngs of genteelmen but, rather, old and young bouncy women to taste and delight in the fruits of the Chef's truly-genius labor. Occasionally, an Irish Soda. Bread-Breaker's attendance floors you, and you just have to sit down; and delight in the best Irish Cheese grated Mashed Potatoes that you've ever encountered in your life!

This recipe is, hands down, one of my favorite tastes ever! I only share it with very good friends. My husband is Irish American from Northern Ireland. They were Protestant. His mother made the dish with the corned beef, cabbage, carrots, and potatoes in one big pot. Everything became soggy and fell apart. She referred to it as a "boiled dinner". I love Chef John's method.

That's one of the little things that annoy me, calling it shephard's pie when it has no lamb or mutton in it. Like the way misuse of the terms marinade and marinate annoy me. It's tough to be a grumpy old man.

Maybe in America they have Shepherds herding cows as well as sheep.
As soon as I watched this, I knew I wanted to make it. I made it yesterday for St. Patrick’s Day today. It was delicious, stupendous and a big hit. When you are having people over and you can do the main course the day before and have it taste this good it’s a home run. Thank you Chef John!
I am about to get out of bed at 11 at night and go to the store to start making this as soon as possible. You are an inspirational chef and person and thank you for all the food happiness you bring to people.

Of course, use your trusty ricer to make the perfect mashed potatoes. It's the best investment I have ever made in the food arena. I real necessity for us Irish...I don't know how our family didn't know about this wundertool.... I have convinced several of my friends that it's the only way to go for mashed potatoes (or as those finicky French call them pommes purée.) For the $30-40 investment, it's well worth it. I can't make mashers any other way now...God bless the French chefs! God bless Julia, Jacques, and especially Joël Robuchon!
6:24 Full corn beef coverage :D Laughed harder than I should have.... :D Love the recipe and I know what I will be preparing tomorrow!
Hands down the best Sheppard's Pie I've ever had! Thank you Chef John!
My husband, who is the main cook in our family, loves your channel. And he’s made this dish for 2 years running to the delight of us and of our friends. Wish I could attach a photo. It is really delicious and deceptively “light”. I contributed this tear with Irish soda bread but it paled in comparison to the mss as in dish. Kudos!
Always appreciate the Irish inspired recipes for Patrick's Day, buíochas. 👍👍🐑
Hello Chef John! I just made your corned beef and cabbage Sheppard pie for my retired Marine neighbor. He throughly enjoyed it. I also made the Irish soda bread. I sent the second loaf home with him. Made my corned beef in the instant pot. I also sent both recipes home with him.
I love this recipe. Now I have more work tomorrow! Thanks, John...
OMG, this is brilliant. Brilliant, I tell you! Sláinte and Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh, Chef John!
chef John you’ve done it again. I love your Paddy’s Day contributions
I was thinking of making something like this and surprise... chef John for the save!!!
Made this last night as part of our early St. Patrick’s Day celebration. It was delightful 🍀
Our new favorite recipe incorporating all this yumminess into a pie! 👍🙂
Magnificent in every way... could not agree more, looks wonderful
I'm about to make this. Chef John has never let me down before so I'm very excited
You are the Binging with Babish of your corned beef and cabbage!
I love this dish. It's like putting together a puzzle, then you put that puzzle in a magic heat box and it comes out all glorious.
Thank you so much chef!!!!! I just fell in love!!
I made this for the first time for dinner tonight- absolutely phenomenal! Thanks Chef John☺️
I made this last night...it's fantastic! Thanks Chef John!
Corned beef stock is a great idea. I have strong nostalgic memories of the potatoes from that stock. Delicious!
Was a huge hit with my family this year! Thanks Chef John!
That MAY be the best plate of food I’ve ever laid my mince pies on! Wonderful. Bravo!
I made this tonight instead of the usual boiled dinner. It's amazing. I'll be making this every year from now on.
I love this idea! I got my corned beef and cabbage ready for tomorrow! Thanks for the recipe, Chef John!
WOW! Amazingly simple looking! I have got to give this a try! Thanks Chef! ♥️👍🏼
I have such a food/personality crush on Chef John and I don't think I am alone. 😊😂
This looks great! Thanks, Chef John ~💁🏼♀️☘️
Oh!!! I do so appreciate this recipe idea! Thanx from a devout follower - who had to have all teeth removed (car crash results), and must now eat 'food processor' foods! This recipe is so perfect for me - and now? I don't have to miss one of my most favorite meals! as all layers can be ground up, and hold their 'place' while cooking in the oven. Luv you, sir! :)
Just watching Chef John & his magic food hands is always entertaining.
Éirinn go Brách! Widdershins or not, this is such a heavenly dish! Thank you Sir Chef John!

Chef John! You are absolutely amazing 👏 😋😋😋👌
Love this channel...so easy to make these dishes
This Cottage Pie looks lovely!
Amazing! I so doing this NEXT year... already cooking my Corned Beef & Cabbage traditional style
Saw this, made it and it’s absolutely colossal. So good.
Sir, I made this for my Irish parents. Mom wanted to know for sure I would send her compliments to the Chef. Very nice. I included everything but the cayenne. Well done, as usual, Sir.
I love that the comment section of every Chef John video is filled with all these rhymes.
CHEF JOHN!!! oh chef john this is so brilliant and I'm so excited to make it!!!!
Looks simple and delicious! Especially those carrots. I've got to try it.
We had this for dinner tonight and it was spectacular. Thank you
Think you I will definitely try this recipe
So made this up yesterday and then in the oven today. Yummy, those potatoes were fantastic, my husband felt this was better than our regular meal. Made one change I used a tiny bit of milk product, then used some of the broth to get the potatoes to the perfect consistency. Also no cheddar (trying to stay away from dairy). Thanks, I love this, with extra broth to add in the bowl.
Can’t wait to make this 😊 love your recipes 👍
I have tried quite a few of your recipes and they all turned out to be amazing. Definitely gonna try this one.
Made this yesterday 3/17/2021 and it was awesome! I'm not a fan of corned beef or cabbage but this was awesome!! It will be a yearly ritual meal for St. Patrick's Day! Thank you Chef John!!
Made this last week and it is amazing!
I boil 2q water and 1tsp salt then dip the beef in for a minute rolling then dump that off as waste and give it a little tumbling sear then pour in the already heated water+spice+herbage from the side and then go. It gets rid of quite a bit of the very sour foam and cleans a lot of the air taste off the meat. If you want with this specific recipe you can substitute in a couple bags of angel coleslaw. I do that in pressure-cooker stew all the time. Your trimmed fat... slice it thin and freeze it for use on pizza.
Chef John is the master of cooking and humor!
My hunny just asked for shepherds pie. But I have my corned beef in the fridge for our traditional March 17th meal. He is going to be so surprised! And he is going to LOVE it!! Thank you!
Great idea ! Can't believe i never thought of that ! I will try that this weekend ! Happy Paddy's Day !
This came right on M'F time--- Thanks chef!!!!
Brilliant idea!
Just made and dam we enjoyed it. Best part I make my own corned beef full brisket. Thanks Chief John
Omg I can’t wait to spring this on the family
Outstanding! I’m having the grandkids for a traditional corned beef and cabbage, but I had bought an extra corned beef to cook and make them leftover sandwiches to-go. Now I think the casserole is much more perfect.
That looks so good. Great idea Chef John.
Beautiful dish.
You've done it again Chef John ! I made this for our Mother's Day dinner this evening and it was a roaring success. There were several demands for seconds, however, the best accolade came from my 8 year old grandson who said "it wasn't good it was perfect". I should admit to adding a cupful of green beans in the layer with the carrots (only because we usually have them with our regular corned beef dinners), apart from that I followed the recipe religiously. Best of all it makes serving the meal a breeze !
Wooww so deliciouse and full of nutrition..Thank you so much for the receipe❤🌹
Alright! A new recipe twist that looks like I would really enjoy!
Looks amazing!
Made it tonight...came out really good!
Made it for the boyfriend! He loved it, says it's delicious! I'm a vegetarian myself, but always love to cook! This was a great idea to keep everything warm!
This so takes me back to my youth and dad making it, or something similar, on a Saturday
Brilliant as always Chef John. Kinda like a bubble and squeak . Loved and Many Thank you;s.
Wonderful work of art..👏👏👏👏
Try braising the corned beef in Vernors Ginger ale 2 hours fat side up @ 300. Flip, then baste occasionally to create a glaze on top. Keep cooking til tender, probably another 2- 3 hours. Rest, cool and slice. I simmered the cabbage and carrots in the braising liquid, diluted. Assemble as Chef John recommend, or whatever order you like, as you are the Buddy Guy of your Sheppard's pie🙄 Just keep the mashed potatoes on top, *or else... I went with meat/ veggies/Swiss/ mashed. 400 till brown, then buttered the top. *or else you will probably end up with a funky TV Dinner soup! Thanks Chef John, for creating fun, approachable, inspiring ideas that make us all better home cooks! Brian Long time listener, first time caller
Wow. Delicious idea.
My wife and I are making this tonight! Can't wait!
This recipe looks so yummy.
WOW how did I not think of this? I still have some leftover from the other night, doing this when I get home.
Chef John, I'm 58 & Irish so you had me at corned beef, cabbage shepherd's pie with the mashed potatoe topping. We use regular cabbage & after cutting out the core we chop that in 1/2 inch chunks & add that to the simmering liquid to tenderize before we add the rest of the cabbage, we waste nothing if possible, very nice recipe, btw, a good mix of fresh grated cheese is 50/50 Irish cheddar & swiss gruyere
