Converting pencils to blue line
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This is my method of converting greyscale pencils to blue line for print. You can choose to do a bit of clean up in Photoshop. In this video the page was pretty clean so no clean up was necessary. As always this is just my process. There is always more than one way to do things in Photoshop.

its crazy watching someone calmly ink a comic book that would become a legend in its time
Great video! Wasn't exactly sure how print the blue line artwork initially. I am very appreciative! Thanks Jonathan!
A decade later and still works like a charm, thanks, man! 0 dislikes speak for themselves. 👍
Awesome tip! Thank you for the help!
Awesome tutorial!😎👍
When I was young we used to ink with red clay and our fingers on the walls of our caves. You kids today and your crazy brushes, lol.
Cool man, thanks for sharing =) always nice to see a vid from the pro's
Thanks, great settings.
Thanks so much for posting this.
This does help, thanks. I'll try this method next. One question, I guess the next step, what kind of paper do you print it to? You mentioned a DC board?
Hi! first thank you for the video, I learned a lot method wise there! one question I do have, is Bristol board a appropriate substitute for comic boards?
Hi Jona! first of all thanks for the videos, just one question, what printer do you use? Regards from México.
cool video, bookmarked your site and about to dive in. I would like to know what type of printer you are using to print 11 x 17 ..
Very cool man! Can you post the setting for the type of blue used? (They were a bit tough to see.)

hue and saturation and colorize... ( hue :180 ,saturation:around 50 -100 ,lightness: around: 40 to 80 depends on how dark you want it)
are you printing out on plain bristol? or are you printing on pre-marked sheets?
Seconding sprinklelouis: what kind of printer, or any printer tips? Most home printers don't print that big, and I've had concerns about the printer ink running when wet with my Canon inkjet.
Thanks for sharing. What is "DC"? Which printer and scanner are recommended? Can Kinkos/FedEx Print and Ship do this?
Thanks for this vid, but can you please also do one for use in Gimp? Not all of us aspiring artists can afford Photoshop yet, lol, myself included. Thanks again and keep up the awesome work!

Actually you can use the same method used by MrGlapion in gimp

@@crakoa1254 I know that we can, but not everyone who uses GIMP knows how to actually do it. The 2 apps are different enough to make it very confusing without assistance.
I have a serious question, why don’t inkers crunch the levels on the artists pencils and so ink or photoshop touch ups instead of going ham on a photo blue page?
is it easy making that transition from paper and ink to photoshop
most of use a brother all in one printer that can scan and print at 11x17. Its pretty cheap think I got mine for about $130
Brother MFC 6490 CW multifunction printer
what were the settings for the blue line convert? The screen is small so I cant see the numbers. Also: what paper are you printing the blue line to? Printer quality/light paper or are you printing it on heavier paper?

Hue: 180, Saturation: 70, Lightness: 55. Make sure Colorize is selected on the bottom right.

I wish there was an app for my phone!!!
When I print a page with this method, I get some very tiny magenta noise along with the blue line art, which I think is quite odd. Is that normal? Is there a way to get rid of the magenta noise?

It's possible it's your printer or you might have it in CMYK instead of RGB. But I'm not Jonathan.

I don't know exactly what the problem was, but I managed to get rid of it. I simply deleted all the white (background), leaving it transparent.

Do you convert your scanned art into grayscale before coloring? Sometimes, I have noticed, the scanner will pick up noise while it's scanning. This could be a problem with the scanner itself as it's picking up imperfections in the art or the paper. I have had blues and magentas/pinks show up in some scans, especially after adjusting contrast, curves or levels. Another trick is to "color range" all your blacks and copying at selection to a new canvas.
Ok so i think I have the technique down. 1. Scan the pencils 2. Convert to blue lines 3. Print to the back of the original penciled page??? 4. Ink 5. Rescan 6. Take out all trace of blue line. 7. Reduce 67% and send to DC. Did I miss anything? Great work. And thank you SO much for taking the time to post these videos.

actually you don't print it back of the original penciled page ...you print over a new artboard
