Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, Canadian classic prog rock guitar teacher on KZread. I grew up on classic 70s prog but abandoned it in the late 80s. Prog seemed dead and my orig. prog band was told by labels we were too prog. So i went onto grunge, pop, then folk, then strictly acoustic solo guitar etc...staying loyal to my staples like Yes and Rush, BUT 2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery that SO much great prog went on that I'd totally missed out on. So join me as I catch up on 30 years of prog!

Absolutely a masterpiece! I'm a huge Muse fan, and what keeps me hooked on their songs over the years is the fact that I can always discover something new in their music unexpectedly. Whether it's background voices or melodies I've never noticed before, it doesn't matter that I've listened to their songs a lot. I really enjoyed this reaction video. I'm definitely going to watch more of your videos. It's great to see how invested you are in your listening and how you absorb every detail. It's like reliving the song all over again. When I heard it 3th time and then one of the live performance, I think it was 2015...then It hit me: I was 30 yrs old, and heard my share of music - I dont image world without music, I was fan of rock bands, composers, rappers. I was always guy that listen to albums, not only singles. I knew Muse before. But then after 5 years or so I found something to listen entire albums. And that night it hit me. Citizen is best song in the world. I finally found my top 1. To this day, It lost this power of novelty, but 3 years ago, it was perfect to me. And remains on top 1 spot since then.

I see a fellow Elder fan, might aswell share some bands I've painstakingly found to satisfy my Elder urge. Elder still beats all of these but that's expected. Weedpecker is an obvious one but theres also Camel driver (Interphase), Samsara blues experiment (anything from long distance trip, singatas my fav), Toundra (more post rock but same atmosphere, check Strelka) Grotto (very obscure but cosmic whispers is very Elder inspired). And one to keep an eye on: Huntsmen, need some time to mature though. (has some growls and Yes inspired cleans but instrumentals are very elder, Colossus is good.

It turned out to have a great first half up to the end of the guitar solo, but unlike Citizen Erased where the 2nd part was so, haunting, relaxing and beautiful while having one of if not the best lyrics in "Wash me away. Clean your body of me. Erase all the memories. They will only bring us pain. And I've seen, all I'll ever need" The Globalist failed to captivate and pull me in the same way. Most felt the same way.

As I get older I ask myself why do I try and stick a label on music & categorise it as this that or the other genre. You get into the realms of what's the definition of 'progressive rock', 'metal', 'pre-Raphaelite harpsichord' music. Does it matter? I don't think so, if you enjoy it, enjoy it.

Sounds a lot like Mars Volta. Not very complicated. Been spoiled by Tool and Marillion lately. Looking forward to you doing some Marillion in the Hogarth genre. Anyway good choice.

You're saying it as if something has to be complicated to be God. While some of the best music is minimalistic.

That's why I prefer Muse over almost anything. Not unneccessarily complicated and always 100% to the point.

Do you think you could check out Octavarium by Dream Theater ? You're a prog fan so I wouldn't be surprised if you've already listened to quite a bit of their catalogue

Fantastic reaction! This also happens to be one of their best, most consistently good live songs. If you ever get a chance to react to one, I'm partial to this one from 2015 just because the solo is so face-meltingly good kzread.info/dash/bejne/dZ-KsrSadbS0kdo.html

Oh my, I'm not a fan of this track at all. Too heavy on vibrato for my taste (I don't like vibrato at all in general) , and instruments too clunky/distorted most of the time. You seem refreshed so, that was enjoyable. 🙂

A lot of newer live performances address the issues you have with the song in my opinion, vocals are much more polished. I recommend the 2011 Reading performance where they played the entire album all the way through to mark its 10 year anniversary.
