Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, Canadian classic prog rock guitar teacher on KZread. I grew up on classic 70s prog but abandoned it in the late 80s. Prog seemed dead and my orig. prog band was told by labels we were too prog. So i went onto grunge, pop, then folk, then strictly acoustic solo guitar etc...staying loyal to my staples like Yes and Rush, BUT 2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery that SO much great prog went on that I'd totally missed out on. So join me as I catch up on 30 years of prog!

Those oscillating waves washing over at the end, feed seamlessly into the next song Micro Cuts on the album. Both have themes of both unintended and deliberate breakdown/corruption of some capital word "Self". Also the riff I read came from Dominic, or at least the drum pattern originally morphed into the riff. You can think of the rough, course & jagged self we're born into as that pattern, but it gets slowly eroded away into something smooth by the end of this song. Great time listening with you as always!

I like that you got the “surf guitar”. Matt’s father was a member of the British band The Tornades which had sort of a surf sound. I also liked that you found this to be a beautiful song. I agree completely. Great job sir.

I second the request to listen to the albums in full, in the album Citizen Erased has a seamless transition into Micro Cuts (which you also already listened to)....it is soooo good. One of the many reasons why I feel like time passes by so quick when listening to the album, since the flow is continuous.

I think what you were looking for with the boxy comment was "claustrophobic" maybe? Sort of how the song travels from being very "claustrophobic, close, and focused" to being very well.."open" and "Free". You hit the nail on the head with a lot of my feelings the first time I listened to it too, the ending really got me the same way. Super emotional and pleading.

Citizen Erased always had been one of my favourite tracks from Muse, and one of the most underrated one in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, the usual stuff people brings when talking about Muse (like New Born, Starlight, Uprising) is very good stuff, but sometimes "secondary" tracks have as much as an impact as the singles that sold the album. I really think that some songs are really worth reacting to if you haven't heard them yet, like Plug It Baby, Hysteria (kind of a classic tbh), Stockholm Syndrome. Muse really has that ability to make tracks that are all different from each other while retaining kind of a common thing that make you go "oh, that is Muse for sure".

Citizen Erased is my favorite Muse song. Has been since my first listen of Origin Of Symmetry when it came out. For me, they had just struck the right chord right there and though they still made a lot of amazing music afterwards, I'm still a bit sad they didn't explore more of this exact direction. For more early and "progressive-ish" songs from them, I think you should check out the obligatory "Space Dementia" and "Butterflies And Hurricanes", but then there are deeper cuts like "Hate This & I'll Love You", "Forced In", "Hyper Chondriac Music" and a personal favorite, "Con-Science".

It's a pleasure to see and hear you describe Muse in a way I cannot, I can in-depth describe what they do to me emotionally and spiritually. I found Muse early 1998 and would hang with them back then, even though we were all so young. I knew in my gut they would be enormous.

Great reaction Dean, with a great breakdown as usual. More Muse whenever you are ready!! This whole idea of reaction video intrigues me. It certainly seems to appeal to a lot of people. For me, who’s introduction to rock music came at a time when one of the few ways to pick up on new bands or new tracks that were not out and out pop music and played on the radio was when your mates shared their latest vinyl captures with you. There was a great delight in playing your latest purchase for your friends and seeing how they responded. Now of course you can just send them a link and they can listen to it in seconds by themselves but then you had to take the vinyl over to their house or invite them to yours. Watching you absorb new stuff or listen to things I have not heard either engenders a similar feeling to those ‘good old days’. That said, I am way too impatient to do what you do. When I hear a great track I would just have to get the album and hear the rest. Keep up the good work and as we head into fall how about some ‘Mostly Autumn’ it’s much less heavy but no less good. Try ‘Western Skies’ , ‘Viking funeral’ or ‘Run for the sun’ from ‘White Rainbows’ ( watch out for the Pink Floyd references - NB they started as a PF cover band!) or if you feel really energetic try the whole album (but a warning the album is 78mins long)

Do you feel like it's been long enough that it might be worth revisiting some of Black Holes and Revelations now that you are a bit more familiar with Muse? It really does have a couple of their all time best songs I feel. My favorites are Take a Bow, Map of the Problematique, and City of Delusion and I would really love to see some of your thoughts on those. Supermassive Black Hole and Knights of Cydonia are classics as well.

Really enjoying these analytical Muse song breakdowns. An interesting video you could consider doing is covering one of the very few hard rock songs they have made in recent years and how Bellamy now struggles to belt them out live - but still manages to perform them well. An example would be The Handler which is considered a difficult song to perform vocally. I would be interested to see you compare the studio version with a live version and see what your opinions are. (Here is a good live example of that track to save you the search; kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZZ16qceFZdqYdaw.html ) Looking forward to the album breakdowns.

One of my favourite Muse songs - I liked it on first listen, love it now and I still great feeling from it 15 years later - Origin of Symmetry is one of my desert island albums. It would be interesting to see you listening and enjoying some of your favourite songs/albums to educate us. It'd be interesting as a guitarist to watch you react to Michael Lee Firkins' self-titled debut or Guthrie Govan's Erotic Cakes albums - truly astonishing, exciting and moving pieces of instrumental virtuosity. Rhode Island Shred (kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKyFy7OFfLqpn6Q.html) by Guthrie is ridiculous!
