CMRR - The first train to Hurley Mountain Road since 1976 - 11/16/14
Catskill Mountain Railroad volunteers have now repaired track to MP:6.23! This is the very first move over the Hurley Mountain Road crossing since 1976! This accomplishment is the result of many dedicated CMRR volunteers working to stimulate Ulster County's economy again!

What an amazing job and a wonderful video. There is something so magical about an old rail line being used after sitting idle for many years. Thank you very much for sharing this moment, you made my son's day!

Rail is on the comeback around the world, great to see an old disused railway coming back to life, great work all you people who made this happen, a credit to you all,
Man, I would love to see what this looked like prior to them clearing the tracks. And rails should never be removed in my opinion. They need to preserve rail lines for possible future reactivation. Once gone, it's too difficult and costly to replace.
Update, end of September, 2019: NEW WEBSITE: @t. NEW TRACKAGE: The CMRR is now running on all available track, from MP3 at Kingston to the east, all the way west to MP @, Route 28A at Stony Hollow. All track has been upgraded by mostly volunteer workers, and any derelict-looking cars are either off the property or have been restored! Unfortunately the 28A crossing was paved over by Ulster County, but CMRR is trying to get it reopened as the track is still on the ground further west to just before Basin Road (around MP10). Unfortunately, the county has removed the rails west of there, but restoring the track to just past MP 11 would bring CMRR to Glenford Dike, a beautiful scenic destination on the Ashokan where the tourist ride could terminate. In the meanwhile, if you're reading this is 2019, some great fall foliage runs, pumpkin trains and the Polar Express are all scheduled for the rest of the year. Come on up to Kingston!

Thanks for that update. I went onto their website and see that they are running trains again over 5 miles, starting in April 2020. The carriages on their website look to be in great order. It would be wonderful if they were able to get a steam loco. However, it is amazing to see how much rail volunteers achieve. Like most rail fans, I think it is exciting to see any line come back from the dead.

I was last up that way and rode their rail back in 2013 (?) - it was the summer after that hurricane devastated that area and up in Vermont. Thinking of coming up again this summer on the way to Montreal.

True or not? The torn up track have marooned some of your equipment at the other end of the line? What of the fight to get track replaced?
What a tribute to all of you dedicated volunteers and your hard work on behalf of the whole community. A great example to others.
Nothing like the sound of an ALCO RS-1 winding up. That whistle is great.
LOVE that old ALCo RS-1, with the six-cylinder (inline type), McIntosh and Seymour turbocharged diesel engine, and the Hancock air whistle!
I rode this line in the 50's it's wonderful to see it operating again! GREAT WORK, THANKS!

Love old railroads. Train horn is great; sounds like an old steam whistle. Great work.
I am a great lover of trains and I think that this is just awesome!
Ooooh! Hancock air whistle. Wonderful!
Wonderful to see the line come back to life, although some of the track looks in need of attention. I hope that they were able to restore these old passenger coaches.
Nothing but LOVE for this!
Would have been interesting to see a "before" video to see how much they had to clear out. Looks like quite a bit based on all the mud on the side and in between the tracks. Nice to see it used again.
Awesome video!! I love seeing old rail lines coming back to life!!
That track is actually in pretty good shape!
Fantastic to see these old lines reopened👍👍 Here in the UK back in 1963 we had what was called 'The Beeching Report' whereby huge swathes of our rail network was closed. Most are gone forever but some have been kept going by private enterprise. Covid put hellish pressure on these enterprises and some are struggling to stay afloat. I wish you all well in your endeavours, power to your elbows lads and lasses 💪💪🏴
Very nice, great work guys.

Great job in clearing the vegetation.

This is great way to repurpose old track. I know there is a huge debate between rail trails and perseving the lines, especially in iconic places like the Catskills.

An excellent video. ♡ T.E.N.
Though she looks good, I would highly consider investing in a second loco, possibly an RS-2 or a restored EMD E/F7, and then restoring your original loco's mechanicals and electronics. I know diesels can go for decades, but seeing that kind of smoke come out of the exhaust tells me something isn't right. As it stands, for a steamer, the railroad could see if Steamtown, USA, in Pennsylvania could locate an engine for you, perhaps even help restore it. Regardless, I am so happy to see this short line be run on again! I highly appreciate keeping the memories of these old rails alive!

Kingston doesnt want business from what 8 surrounding states? New Jersey, new Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania ect....people come from all over to come spend their money in kingstin. And the stupid mayor only cares about a walking trail. You need exercise park your damn car and walk to work. Or how about get a membership at a gym? Instead theyvratherthey rather ruin the railroad....even As an adult I really love and enjoy this. It's sad what they do to stop the CMRR. A higher ranking official from the state government should step in and help out. Delgado? Whoever it is...???

Don't expect common sense to be prevalent in some elected officials, that's why we were given the vote, let him discover tracks at the local schools,it should be obvious he feels like he can force his desires on you.
Wonderful
one coach was kept for restoration and the rest were sold to other tourist railroads for restoration. they were pushed to the end of service track to get them out of the way.
Those old passenger cars are pictured on Google Earth as "abandoned railroad cars". I've been perusing KZread for abandoned RR videos and went to G.E. to see where you are located. Best of luck bringing this back to life!
Interesting video, you guys have been busy. I have a question - was the road bed originally cinder or stone?
miss you guys and train
The old Alco sounds great, just like an Alco should.
Even though it's been over a year, you guys indeed do a marvelous job bringing back the "real" tracks and not turning the track into a walkway track! Awesome job gentlemen! And it truly takes a dedicated team to do this! Locomotive 401 how old is she? She looks in mighty excellent condition!!

Are the passenger cars in the consist abandon cars that you collected or are the part of the MOW Equipment used to clear the line?
That whistle!
Cool video 👍
I like this genre ( locomotive off road)
Wonderful! Wish I could have been there to dig and clear the right of way. Air whistle? Why not horn? Good to roll lightweight car over the rails, then heavier cars. If a rail fails the problem is easier to remedy. Nicediting! Thank you
Good job, guys. Can't get one of these at Walmart

Those tracks are in really good shape for being abandoned so long...
You guys have done more work on your track in a short period of time than Conrail and CSX have done in Massey yard in 40 years

What did they do with those old coaches? Turn them into razor blades?
For the 1st time since 1976.
Hey that 401 alco ya got there I have in ho scale on my layout only it's in white stripes and says New York central but same number board
Looks like high speed track
Their using about half the ties as normal, so that means less load capacity?
Looking at Google Earth, the satellite image says 2016 and it looks as overgrown as the ground photo taken in 2012. Is the right of way around this crossing clear now, like it is in this video? Looks like you folks put in quite a few crossties in the vicinity of that grade crossing. What came out, looks like the ties came out in pieces. Amazing how fast the track structure falls apart without maintenance, isn't it? Good job!

very wonderful. is this locomotive some type of Alco? the shape reminds me of one because where I live there is the Nevada northern railway, and I am a volunteer there. For 7 years and counting! Anyways, we have two Alco's, an RS1 and an RS2. Also, the horn sounds like a steam whistle, and I know I've heard one before, and I've heard the name, but I can't remember it. Anyways, Wonderful!
@desertbob6835

It's an RS1 that's on very short time. That 539's only running on 4 or 5 cyls, from what I can hear and see in the exhaust. This whistle is a Hancock, standard equipment on the NYNH&H.
They have the cars go first. That's smart. Its better having one derail than the engine!
looks better than the abandoned rail road here me and a few friend cleared a 8 mile section of track not hard just few trees but horrible track have 2 cars at one end when we released the brake the car rolled about a 1/4 mile before it fell between the rails
that gondola needs another coupler.
The ties seem far apart, am I missing something ?
I am surprised those old coaches did not disintegrate as they were being pushed!
