Phoenicia in one scene after leaving Kingston . Use to hear and see them passing behind our place between Phoenicia and Allaben . Awesome sight !!
Grat Motorcar ride. I felt I was riding with you. Thank you.
Outstanding video great 👍 scenery
.
I would love to hop a free ride
Pretty fast on an overgrown weed covered roadbed. Can’t see the quality of the track. Good luck , I enjoyed the ride.
How cool is that !! Seeing that old RS1 looking so strong!! Great job “ boys” !!!
Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back In Town
Why’s the diesel got a steam whistle?
It’s called a Hancock 47000 these were commonly used on the New Haven railroad but other Railroads! use them as well instead of having a loud horn they use these instead so there won’t be any noise complaints
This would make a great rail bike or rail car riding section. That would help keep it clear while you are trying to get the crossing restored.
Rail cars look rusted vandalized and abused engine looks nice 👍 By the way, why does it sound like a steam locomotive 👀
This is sad when hurricane Irene hit New York State in 2011 people lost homes and businesses and jobs and schools were cancelled for the first day of school in 2011 but in 2011 people came together to help rebuild after hurricane Irene was done to help rebuild homes businesses and schools
Fantastic to see these old lines reopened👍👍 Here in the UK back in 1963 we had what was called 'The Beeching Report' whereby huge swathes of our rail network was closed. Most are gone forever but some have been kept going by private enterprise. Covid put hellish pressure on these enterprises and some are struggling to stay afloat. I wish you all well in your endeavours, power to your elbows lads and lasses 💪💪🏴
Looks great! Seeing the old inactive U&D tracks in the woods on the way to Belleayre helped to spark my interest in railroad history in the first place. It's a shame you guys aren't able to get there anymore Truly would've been an incredible if not magical experience on that final stretch west of Phoenicia when the valley narrows (or rather the character of the area seems to change), the mountains overshadow you and there's only the creek and the road- a real life Polar Express at night in the middle of winter- nothing else like it. But good luck trying to get to Basin Road or Glenford Dike if you're still aiming that far (1 mile trail overlap isn't that much!) so you can at least have a nice scenic vista with the reservoir and mountains that could act as a fitting terminus.
I have to make a trip up there and try that out, looks beautiful!🇺🇸
I was so confused. In the picture it looked to be a diesel, then I heard that whistle and was like ... no... steam. Then I heard the turbo and saw it pass the camera. So was an air powered steam whistle the factory noisemaker on this engine or was it added? There is nothing like the sound of a whistle. It is so alive compared to the diesel horns, and even worse the high pitch noise that the straight electric trains make. We need to reel things back a bit.
It is a Hancock horn from a new haven fl9.
Damn with the Ashokan Rail Trail bring back the tracks. All the money spent making a trail, could of repaired the tracks and open it for service again. Dumb New York destroyed history.
In typical fashion the city of New York and local politicians crippled the Catskills for their own gains, building of the reservoir all over again... Watch the movie Deep Water, not the first time locals or even this railroad has gotten the shaft
get all the petty criminals and welfare free loaders to do the work for free.
Out of sync.
What existed beyond the end of this video? it looks like the track becomes impassible? or was the track removed beyond that point?
Track went about another 12 miles till you got to the esopus creek. Bridge was taken out by hurricane Irene. 😢
It cost way more money to rip that track for the trail up than to rebuild the line… FACT
2022: cherish this video. The state and county pulled the tracks west of Basin Road, and CMRR only operates now to Stony Hollow. But most of the track has been rebuilt from Westbrook Lene to Stony Hollow, and it’s a very fine ride. Hope is to extend to Basin Road.
Woow! This was fun, heavy fun!
Yes. I had a good time doing it.
Great History Video! I had always hoped that the whole line could have been used again for tourism. A couple of short lines existed like the "Tube Train" near Phoenicia, the D&H Line in Arkville, and the Catskill Mountain Railroad. The bad floods wiped out lot of critical sections of track that ended that hope. With all of the regulations today involving any work or disturbance of waterways and/or wetlands, I don't believe that the sections of track and bridges will ever be put back. So sad.
Thank you for the "ride"! I was wondering if that section of track was still there. We had been over the Reservoir Rd. bridge many times. My Dad, Mom, and sister lived in Olivebridge until 1982.
It seems like the track was pulled up a couple years ago and turned into a rail trail.
Beautiful!
That was great! I always wanted to take a trip like that. I lived in Fleischmanns from 1968 - 1971 when that freight line was active. The tracks went from Kingston to Oneonta. I recall a major derailment near Shokan and the repair crews were parked on 28 and had to trudge through 2ft of snow to get to the site. They were there for several days! It's too bad that several large sections of the tracks and some bridges were destroyed by the major floods over the years. :(
Fast forward 50 years - this green head-trip on a national level effectively prevents a new refinery from being built anywhere in the country. 🤠
It would be great if passengers could get off the train at Basin Rd. to walk on the rail trail, maybe even having a choice of trains back to Kingston. The track is up an embankment, so a "tourist hub" might be tricky.
Stairs up from parking below is the current proposal.
Looks like a ghost train going through there
Thank you 🙏 to the AShokan DEP police department and town of olive police department and local fire departments who help all of us through hurricane Irene and hurricane Henry
Nice one 👍
The wine keeps going a lot further than the dike. It looks like they even put in a brand new bridge and it goes all the way to Phoenicia. Is this not the case ?
No. They ripped up the rails from basin road to the end of the reservoir.
Tbh y’all deserve an actual terminus
What a beatifull line the CMRR haves 😍😍
We can only go to 35:45 in video because the county ripped up the rails from that point.
3:30 Now we know where the aliens have been staying
Say no to rail trails
Too late, I think they have been removed between MP 11 through 19.
I am surprised those old coaches did not disintegrate as they were being pushed!
A little 50 tonner?
So what happened with the extension out to the dam? I'm guessing the trail advocate punks got thier way and tore up active money making tracks?
Yes, everything from Basin Road in Hurley to New York City Rd. In Boiceville has been removed and turned into trail. However everything after that point remains untouched, although some of the tracks before Phoenicia were washed out by hurricane Irene.
My most fervent wishes to their good luck then, New York state has been a bitch to them.
@@GooseinTheCabooseProductions New York State is anti business this is coming from a former New Yorker !
I..@@GooseinTheCabooseProductions
@@GooseinTheCabooseProductionsit is actually the County. 😮
I tried commenting on this thread but it keeps getting deleted...I gave a brief history of the line and why, sadly, the economics don't support it. I'll try again shortly.
That track is in horrendous shape how much money to fix it?
A lot of it is in pretty good shape. Light inspection trains ran up there only a few years ago.
@@countrypaul but the leftists will kill it you know that
@@ernestpassaro9663, careful of stones you throw; I'm on the left and passionate about seeing the CMRR on as much track as they can get. This is about pro- or anti-rail folks, and apparently the county and towns are looking favorably on CMRR now that they've seen how much new money they're bringing to the area despite their former opposition. I'm only reporting thirs-hand, but that's the buzz I hear.
@@countrypaul anti rail folks are the liberals or leftists who are in power there who despise progress!
@@countrypaul they should try to drum up some freight customers and reconnect with csx or Norfolk Southern
They need to start running freight again to make up all the money they lost due to those idiots tearing up their trackage!
Typical lawyer masquerading as a railroader !
That music sucks !
Why th e clanking bell???
Would love to get to get to ride this line on bike rail.
