So, here we are on June 18th, 2021. Looking back- so much has occurred..........the P.C. ran its' last ride...Conrail struggled, but quickly jumped ship. The rails rusted...the ties rotted...Mother Nature and a storm named Irene ravaged the corridor in spots. The R.O.W. was seized for back taxes by Ulster County...the Washington D.C. based group and VERY wealthy lobby group Rails To Trails Consortium became involved, and rails were ripped up. A walking trail was layed down where once mighty trains plyed the landscape. Groups were formed, rallys were held, folks on both sides became financially and emotionally involved in the BEST way to utilize the corridor. .......And, now, more rails are being threatened with being removed further West- in the Big Indian/ Pine Hill region. $1.3 to $2 million dollars per mile has been "spent" putting in a fairly low to medium use trail with very low monetary return to the county and region. Where will this end? What will become of these and other rail corridors? Remember this: once History is destroyed....it is indeed gone forever.

Russ...you are correct that once the rails are removed, they probably are gone forever.

Great History Video! I had always hoped that the whole line could have been used again for tourism. A couple of short lines existed like the "Tube Train" near Phoenicia, the D&H Line in Arkville, and the Catskill Mountain Railroad. The bad floods wiped out lot of critical sections of track that ended that hope. With all of the regulations today involving any work or disturbance of waterways and/or wetlands, I don't believe that the sections of track and bridges will ever be put back. So sad.

Fast forward 50 years - this green head-trip on a national level effectively prevents a new refinery from being built anywhere in the country. 🤠

I gotta tell ya, if I could go back in time and witness one of these many freight trains going by and to see this line with such activity, I WOULD, cause I sure as hell don't think we'll ever see any freight on this line ever again.

@@kingstoncatskillmountain I get your point, but unfortunately there are too many county residence that hate railroads and complain if the slightest thing happens on it such as someone riding their rail speeder on it.

Conrail: a horrible idea 50 years ago, but today all the foamers go crazy for a patched NS unit. On a separate note, it's comical that 4012 is pulled by a Guilford Geep, which at this point must be in PAR paint.

I tried commenting on this thread but it keeps getting deleted...I gave a brief history of the line and why, sadly, the economics don't support it. I'll try again shortly.
