There's a nice train ride on a railroad by my house that owns an Alco S1 like this one. Love to see this railroad still kickin' in the catskills!

Just imagine for a moment, this railroad was never dis-favored, and all the rails had fresh ballasts and everything. And theyd have a bunch of GEVOs and SD 70s lined up pulling big freight trains. Either way, these tracks are lucky to be here.

amazing that people are (were?) allowed to stand in an open moving train car like this? seems like the govie would have all kinds of safety regulations & whatnot ...

Tell the city and county to stop taking the tracks up. Everyone wants this to go to ashokan reservoir and into the mountains. But the county keeps messing up the tracks. It belongs to catskill mountain railroad not the county to put stupid rail trails. If people need excersize go to the gym lol.or find another place for a hiking trail.

They are the worst. They keep stealing track from them. People come from all over and bring business to Ulster county from many states. It's like they are sabotaging themselves....because the money doesnt come here. Tourists will find somewhere else to spend there money.$$$$$ thanks to the Ulster county government stopping these nice folks. They are the nicest people you'll ever meet.🙏🙏🙏

So much of our railroad history is being lost in this country, when the country was built by the railroads. Why not build the pedestrian walkway along side the entire length of the railroad, a chain link fence about three to four foot would be perfect and the trail could run the length of the railroad.

Most railroads have enough right of way, why destroy an icon that built this country? Too many railroads are lost forever this way.

vettebecker1 ....I agree absolutely..It is a truly sad loss of Americana... whenever and wherever it occurs...Most people are just not CONSCIOUS of the future plight of the old, rarely used rail lines...also, the $ from the sale of the high grade steel, especially in the poorest counties, is too much for the local town councils / govt's to pass up...Your pedestrian walkways seems a splendid solution. It's just a shame that ignorance and apathy will in most cases I'm afraid, result in the loss of nearly all of them, eventually..

They made the Pennypack trail near Philadelphia recently. It was the old Septa railroads that went from Philadelphia to Newtown. It turned out great. lots of good trails and parks. But then again you could have both like the Lehigh Gorge with it's Scenic Railroad next to Jim Thorpe PA. It's truly amazing there.

this will never survive. The City of New York DEC doesn't make money from it, they could have some lawsuit if a citizen gets bruised or scratched, and they have authority to throw around, which is always something some distant bureaucrat loves to do. There will be no significant public clamor to rouse a politician to help out, and he'd have to find a way to use it to raise campaign money. Absent solutions, this old railroad tour will be killed, count on it.
