Cass Scenic Railroad Appalachian Fall Foliage
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Deep in the Appalachian spine of West Virginia lies the small town of Cass, home to the world-famous Cass Scenic Railroad. The railroad is home to the world's largest collection of geared Shay steam locomotives, three of which we witness in operation on the CSRR, along with geared Heisler steam locomotive #6 on the railroad's Whittaker Trips. Then we go for a ride as Western Maryland Railway "Big 6" brings us to Bald Knob, one of the highest points in West Virginia.
Don't forget to comment, like, share, and subscribe for plenty of great railroading action from all over the USA! Follow us for more photos and video at / dyprod

That first section with the three 3-Truck Shays is awesome!! And then to see the Heisler running is beautiful!
Rode this railroad with my late wife and friends in the 90s. It was a great little trip that I strongly recommend.

Great place every time.
What a fantastic railroad this is. Bet the views on it are to die for, the rolling stock is something special - a working three-truck Heisler! - and it brings money and tourists into the town. Awesome.

Heisler? Oh, so that's what the other odd locomotive in this video is called? I recognized the Shay locomotives, but that other one, with the cylinders mounted at angles on each side of the boiler, is new to me. I would seem to me that either a Shay or a Heisler locomotive could be made extremely versatile if it were given a transmission with multiple gears, like a motor-car. Of course, that's also something else to break down.
@ArchTeryx00
5 жыл бұрын
@@redstripecougar4186 Well, cars are designed to handle many different types of conditions and tasks. There's SOME specialization (like trucks vs. cars) but there isn't that much of a difference. The geared locos - Shay and Heisler/Climax locos - were specially designed for one purpose: Extremely high torque on narrow gauge lines. They were designed to haul HEAVY loads up very steep grades, often over temporary or rough track. Adding a transmission/gearbox wouldn't have added any flexibility to their function, but would have added a LOT more machinery to break down. And they already were maintenance nightmares! They remain what they always were - a way to haul really heavy shit up really steep slopes really s....l...o...w...l....y. But they sure make for an awesome show for a tourist railroad!

Big 6's whistle is just... M Y S T I C A L
I worked 2 summers as a stoker both on #5 and #7 when I was in my early 20's. To this day, best job I ever had. #6 the middle Shay in display is the largest shay locomotive in the us. A true beast.
@everettmeehling1835
4 жыл бұрын
6 is actually not just the largest in the US, but the world. She was outsized only by the C-150-4 series shays, such as the WVP&P no. 14 which was based at Cass. All of which are gone. Out of curiosity, as someone whos fired coal fired steam engines before myself, do you have any knowledge on how firing shay 7 compared to shay 4? Since the two are both C-70-3 series shays, but hardly identical.
@bproudd
4 жыл бұрын
@@everettmeehling1835 sadly, I never got the opportunity to fire #4. However, I can tell you every locomotive is different and tick in different ways. #7 was temperamental when at %80 or below our working tonnage, she preferred to haul heavy. She also preferred coal ON DEMAND, instead of in advance like many do. I chalk that up to the thinner fire box. #7 also had a lower pressure relief then the other shay #5 I fired...... which would always surprise me inconveniently. As for #4, I only remember the gripe that she was slightly under powered during the spruce grade but quite frankly they all are during peak season.
Beautiful scenery! Beautiful sound!
Can't say I can recall seeing anything like this in Australia. Complete with nice, stylish photography to make it all the more interesting.

Folks, this is an awesome "bucket list" trip for anyone. It does get rather cold and blustery on Bald Knob, or you can take the shorter trip to Whitaker and back down if that suits you better. You can even rent a local house from the original era of the mill town for a weekend for a group. As I said, it is a great unique vacation idea.
