Clockwork: Your Time is Up Review

In today's episode we take a look at a pasta that just might have Jeff the Killer beat in a lot of ways in terms of how awful it is. Also, no John Cena jokes, I promise.

    1) So...being raped and beaten didn't make her self-mutilate in a horrible bizarre way, but breaking up with her boyfriend did? I guess you could argue it's the "straw that broke the camel's back" scenario, or that having the boyfriend was just what stopped her from hurting herself before, but it doesn't really work for me. It just, as you said, seems like poor writing, where the story topped itself early with much worse things happening to her, so it seems absurd when something like this upsets her so much more 2) A therapist wouldn't do that. They're not gonna freak out because a teenager goes on a whiny nihilist rant. Therapists hear much freakier shit all the time, that's their job. This is used to make Natalie seem all edgy and scary like OOOH THE THERAPIST FLED but it's such bullshit. Also, it's annoying how it's also used to blame everything on the therapist of all people, not on anyone who actually hurt or neglected Natalie, and certainly not on Natalie herself and her own choices 3) So, here's the big problem with Clockwork, Jeff the Killer, etc., and the fact that they're so sympathetic and their victims are all horrible assholes----it sucks the scary out of it. Because it's made clear that the only people who get killed are horrible, awful people who very personally earn it from the killer. That's not scary for a reader, because we don't feel it could happen to us. When something happens to someone good or innocent or just normal, that frightens us, because we see ourselves that way. We don't feel like we're bullies or abusers, so we don't have any fear at all that their punishments could ever possibly befall us. If you're rooting for the killer, you're not going to be scared of them.

    If I wanted to improve Clockwork, here’s how I’d do it. What if her backstory was the polar opposite of what we’ve heard of her childhood? What if she had very loving parents, a good brother who was always looking out for her, and in general her life was quite good? Imagine that, as a child, she somehow gained an ability/curse that causes her to see the approximate time of someone’s death, but the numbers are constantly changing, and people can still die when they have plenty of time left. Imagine that she at some point saves someone who still had time from a car crash, only to realize that somehow by saving them, she just drained them of all of the time they had left and added it to her own counter, which has become more static. So now you’ve got a girl who can see that people have constantly changing amounts of time left, and she's caught on to the fact that the more it changes, the more likely they are to die. She develops a severe obsession with studying numbers, and how can she help people stabilize their timers and her own at the same time. One day she sees that her family’s timers are changing constantly, just like the person she “saved.” She braces herself for the inevitable...but it never comes. Days go by, their counters keep changing, but they just go about their business and nothing happens. Meanwhile, she's losing it, her grip on rationality is slipping, and she becomes convinced that the best thing to do is to just stop their counters (i.e., kill them). So she does just that, but realizes that their counters are still going after death. Hers, by comparison, has become that much slower. With that, she loses what fragile grasp on reality she had and makes it her goal to give the ultimate middle finger to whatever force or being playing this sick joke on her by taking the time of as many people with constantly changing timers as she can.

    I think a way to make Clockwork better is this: make Natalie incredibly normal, an ordinary person no one would bat an eye at. Like, she'd have a few friends that she'd hang out with, an interest in art, talks, acts, eats, sleeps, _IS_ normal, and so in the crowd that you would've thought she was Waldo's sister or something. One day, she watches something creepy, or out of the ordinary, like she sees Emergency Metamorphosis (177103 for the Nhentai savvy) or something. She finds it interesting, and she realizes that the fucked up part of the world is something she _needs_ the be a part of, or lest she ceases to exist. She starts watching mature movies, checks out true crime shit, and starts using a big brain meme and slowly starts killing people. First, it's the kid next door, then it's Joshua from the convenient store, then starts murdering people she just doesn't feel like they should exist. One day, she gets caught and sent to an asylum. When she is in a room with a therapist, she starts talking about her feelings of wanting to stay weird that she cannot fathom the fact that what she's doing is wrong. The story ends in such an ambiguous way that it is hard to say if she's real or fake, or if she's alive or dead. I mean, this sounds stupid, but at least this makes everything sound significantly better than what we got.

    But by that point, the original idea of her being called Clockwork would be lost. I figure it should be more focused on time. Have her be a watchmaker who's tired of the ticking. Of the mind-numbing repetition of every day life. So instead, she just goes postal one day and begins to kill people in creative, time and clock based scenarios. She still carves out her own eye, but it's more for symbolism rather than "Oh, look how cool it is!". She does the same to her victims, while also mocking them for being late. Eventually, she'd be caught and forced into an asylum, forced to hear the ticking of clocks for all eternity in silent torment.

    Honestly the worst part of this story in my opinion is the mishandle and abuse of the concept and the horrible issue of rape, because as someone who recently had a close friend who was sexually assaulted, its insulting how the story doesn't deal with any of the nuance and problems the act causes, and how it can hurt a person. It instead uses rape as nothing more then a plot device that begs for sympathy for the main character

  • @FishStickOnAStick

    @FishStickOnAStick

    8 жыл бұрын

    Now that's a real tricky question, and I can dance around it and say that art is subjective so everyone is going to interpret it differently, but I'll try not to cop out here because this is basically a show to teach you how to be a better writer. Much like death affects the narrative progression of a story, rape affects the progression of the character, it affects how they react to situations and people. So a character might feel more terrified just walking around at night than they would before. So if your character is raped over the course of the story, it would be best to introduce them prior, have the rape be after we've gotten to know them, that way it's easier to empathize with them because we give a shit about them and not because "oh no, they were raped and that's bad, I feel bad for them." I also feel like it should sort of take center stage and have a good portion of the character and their actions be based around it, otherwise you'll have it feel like Clockwork where it's just there and almost never brought up again. If you have a character who's raped, but nothing really changes or the audience doesn't notice any changes, it feels tasteless and like it's used just for shock value. If you are going to sort of sideline it, let it be a side character or a minor character who was raped in the past. Having a character be raped as a backstory isn't a bad thing and can be used to explain motivations, mindset and actions. For instance in Telltale's Walking Dead game there's a sequence in Episode 2 where you're confronted by a deranged woman who it is heavily implied through her actions and dialogue was raped, potentially multiple times and potentially her daughter as well. The implicity here is a big part of what makes it work, rape is a horrifying act and to exemplify it, the horror should be underlying in a case like this. It can feel downright shocking when you make that realization after the fact, and in a good way, not a cheap way. Doing research so as not to be tasteless or inaccurate is also a good idea for writing anything really, not just rape. I think what's most important though, is how your character ultimately reacts to the situation. How do they come out of it? Do they let what happened to them control and consume them or do they stand up on their own two feet and try their hardest to move on? Either scenario is realistic, and there's a thousand more that could come out of it. You could write an inspirational story for those affected by rape, you could write a tragedy about someone who lets it eat away at them, you could write outright smut for rape fetishists, or you could write a piece of shit like Clockwork. But don't do that last one. Be better than that.

    from what I can gather from some comments, this story was written because the writer was put through similar shit as a child. Although that IS unfortunate, and people need something to cope, problem is, creepypasta isn't exactly a place to go to in order to talk about trauma. If the writer wanted to tell their story, there's other places to talk about it, there's so many places that would be a safe space to go to for support, but the creepypasta community isn't one of them.

    I actually had an idea for a Clockwork rewrite recently. It's in the *very* early stages, like, 'not even with a proper structure aside from the basic idea' early. So let me know if you like it! Instead of an origin story for her, it's a story about a detective investigating her various murders, maybe written like a case file. The detective carries around a pocket watch. During a confrontation with Nathalie, the detective shoots her in the eye. After she falls into a river, or runs away, or whatever, she comes back and ends up killing the detective, and decides to use his watch as a replacement eye. Maybe as a twisted show of respect for the one man that almost bested her. She constantly mentions looking for 'it.' It is never explained what 'it' is. Her parents are mostly the same, albeit toned down *a* *lot* from the original story, and her brother isn't a pedo, just an asshole. Cut out the whole time stuff, since it isn't even that important, and boom, a maybe half-decent version of Clockwork. New Title: The 'Clockwork' Casefile

  • @WhyYouMadBoi

    @WhyYouMadBoi

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well a good killer/slasher is Freddy Kruger, Through 9 movies, a tv show, and a pop album.It shows how being immortal got the best of him causing him to kill in anyway he wants. He even has the set up of him bein a dream demon so he can get away with it. He looks like he's having fun killing teens and that's creepy if you think of it. Now he's a good character but as a killer he's hit or miss really.

  • @MonsieurMaskedMan

    @MonsieurMaskedMan

    if its doesn't get a big fanbase its a good slasher, because that the slasher is so realistic that we just want to stop him like a real serial killer in the first place, the slasher is so uncanny and unrelated whatsoever that makes us think that we should stop him, for instance think that the stuntman mike character from Death Proof is a good slasher for a drama film he really like to teasing with the girls/victim before actually kill them in an instant car crash

Or pretending Sonya was both normal looking and beautiful and everyone made fun of her beautiful singing voice because they were _sooooo, like, jealous._ Clockwork was deeply uncomfortable and mind-numbingly boring and not scary at all and unrealistic and physics-defying and basically stupid in everything it tried to do, but it _tried._ There was basic general consistency and an attempt at theming, at least. I don't get that from Silent Sonya.

    If I remade the story, I'd make Clockwork a normal person. Her family was just like what you'd see in any given, normal, home. The father is an understandable asshole, the mother is trying her best to help the family out, and the brother isn't a fucking rapist creep. As the time goes on, Natalee goes through life and is going crazy because school is pretty much a hellhole. Through bullying and the fact that no one can do anything about it because of the fact that the bullies are seen as "good kids" to the adults. One day, as Natale is going through the emotions in her room, her thoughts get dark and darker still. But, the dark thoughts ONLY start a while AFTER the bullies and other characters are established. Natale, being a teenager, believes this to be normal, because being edgy and angry at shit is normal in people. One day, as she is talking to her stuffed giraffe, the dark thoughts grow louder and louder. Eventually, the bullying goes from bad to worst and when Natale is in her room, the dark thoughts engalfe her and the next day, she brings her giraffe and a knife to school. She waits in the bathroom and the bullies come in. She immediately corners them and stabs them to death, leaving one alive and making it look like it was the last bully. Back at home, she realizes that she killed a few people and was trying to justify it. Eventually, she tries to bring herself in, but she can't make herself do it. She eventually loses her mind some time later and she eventually starts killing people who, in her eyes, deserves it. Each death is at a certain time, and every time, she has her toy giraffe with her. Eventually, she realizes that the giraffe is a demon and she can't do anything about her predicament and she is now a killer, without her wanting to not be a killer. Hell, that would be slightly better than what we got.
