Finally learning that just because there is a space where decor can go doesn't mean it needs to be there has helped cut down on visual clutter.

The cool thing about this exercise is that I realize that I’ve finally gotten to the point where I love the decor items that I currently have. So I’ve just moved items around and my decor items feel refreshed again. Thanks for the inspiration!

I'm the type that thought if there was space against my wall, something needed to be there. And then if something was there, something needed to be either in it or on it. Since I started watching you and Dawn, I'm at a happier mental place knowing that empty space is nice! And you helped me realize that having too many things makes a room look cluttered and really are not necessary. I rent so there is nothing on the walls - don't want to get charged for putting holes. My clutter is mostly bins and not STD's .... that's NOT the STAD that you are thinking - shame on you! We call STD's S&$t to dust LOL. But your series is really helping me keep clearing those pieces out as well to get ready for our move. Side note - years ago when my husband and I moved into our first home together, his Aunt gifted us a small elephant as a sign of good luck in the home - so I totally get it. You should take this opportunity and turn it into a game. You can sneak it into your mom's house and see how long it takes her to notice it.

Taking all my decor down for house prep and showings made me realize how much of it was just there because it had been there for so long I didn't see it anymore! I've been loving the minimal look with everything packed away, but I'm hoping I'll discover a few treasures when I unpack in the new house!

Hah! This inspired me to do a bit of the opposite. I drastically cut down on my possessions when I left the ex and moved to a different state. I really don't have a lot of decor. What I do have are a dozen Dinotopia prints that are framed and have been sitting in a pile in the corner instead of being hung up where I can enjoy them. This inspired me to get them off the floor and back into the walls where they belong!

I know you're going to remodel this summer, but all the old light fixtures in your dining/living rooms are what we've been buying for our remodel to make our house look old! 😆 Be sure you resell those because people are definitely looking for them, especially the shades. Thanks for the encouragement!

I've got toddlers and messes happen quicker than I'm able to clean the up. I know that I've got to purge. With less stuff, there'll be less opportunity to scatter said stuff. Saying and doing the purging are another subject. Breathe, and repeat "one day at a time". 😂

I remember having to remind myself “one day at a time” while I was getting my house in order. Decluttering is the most worthwhile thing I’ve ever done for myself. The house still gets chaotic but my husband and I can pick it up in 15 minutes at the end of the day. You got this! And be kind to yourself during the process. 😉

One day at a time indeed! I too have small children but since subbing to this channel, each day has gotten progressively easier. I have less stuff, less to clean and i feel more on top rather than chasing my tail all day long and feeling overwhelmed. Im a homeschool mum too so things have to be organised pretty well or it gets too hard.

I think this is the first time I’ve seen Decor as an area for decluttering, but it’s so needed. I even have to look critically at my plants to make sure I love each one enough that it’s worth the time it takes to keep it watered and dusted.

I grew up in an era where you held on to things regardless. As I have been purging through my house in this last two years, I have realized I am only keeping the things that I really use and that I really enjoy. A lot of heirlooms that have been passed on to others and some heirlooms that were donated for someone else to love. That brings me joy!

Decor is one of the hardest things to decluttered for me. I’m a crafty person and I always think “well maybe I could diy that”. It usually always ends up in a closet and I never actually do anything with it. I got rid of quite a few things today and feel so much better having the space. Decor isn’t a sentimental thing for me, but it still brings guilt because of the money that was spent. But the money is already gone and I can’t get it back, and I’d rather have a clean home that a bunch of junk I’m not using. Thank you for the inspiration!

  • @tngirlz4622

Totally hear you on the ‘guilt’ decor items - we inherited a carload of them from my husband’s family. I have them stored in boxes in our basement. Just because we were given them and told, ‘now, don’t get rid of this,’ doesn’t mean it has to be on show in our home. I actually have very few decor items, and almost all are wood or metal, a holdover from when my kids were small. I wanted nothing breakable in any room they played in. The advantage to having just enough to keep the place from looking bare is that I can dust a room in a few minutes!

  • @Sphynxzy8

I like that you included the sentimental, guilt item. I have definitely held onto some things that I don't love, but they belonged to a family member who has passed. I have found it really difficult to part with them, so I took pictures of the items, and finally donated a few things, and I love that I still have the memory of the item, captured in the pictured, but they aren't cluttering my house, and pulling away from the decor I like.

I've come to realize the more decor I have the more I have to dust. For the last few years I've been resisting buying just because it's on clearance at home goods and instead purposefully looking to decorate. I've been leaning more toward unique and/or handmade things because they're more meaningful:)

I have realized that though I like decor, having anything on a surface invites other items onto that surface... Especially items placed there by other members of my household. Getting rid of decor particularly on hot spots like the kitchen counter has really helped keep piles from forming in my house.

The other day, we were decluttering books. I have in my guestroom floor to ceiling/wall-to-wall bookshelves. They are filled with books, records, and some decor. I had been ongoingly decluttering books, in anticipation of downsizing. Easter morning, I went through my three book shelf section of books. I wanted to get them all together, to see if that is left I wanted to keep. I got them all together. Pulled out eight more books to put on my free Facebook page. Consolidated the rest into one full shelf, and a couple of items on other shelves that had open spots, because they had already been decluttered. I found quite a handful of decor items I purchased on European trips. I put them all together on one shelf, but they’re small and hard to clean around. I want to keep them all, so I’m going to move them into the entertainment center in the living room. There are sections with tinted windows you can see through. I’m going to make a little montage on a plate or container lid, so it’s easier for the cleaning lady who helps me once every four weeks. Thank you so much.

Because we just did a massive remodel here, we had the opportunity to go through so many things. As we redecorated the space, I took items from other rooms etc. I also donated 2 large boxes of things that we held on to in case we needed them. Now that the remodel is finished, I am happy with the choices I made with the items we kept and used. I did however remove 7 more decor items today. These were items I found in the spare bedroom closet and have no place to put them. GONE... Thanks again for all the inspiration

Same here, my „decor“ consists of three pictures (in nice frames, that we took ourselves), a clock in the kitchen and some art my child made in Kindergarten, that was too cute to declutter without attracting attention. And that’s for a whole apartment. We do of course have some Christmas tree decorations, but those are just for the tree and some fairy lights for the garden (two small strings).

Decor is something I’ve thought about a lot for a while. We mostly have plants but do keep a few other items too and I’m a bit fed up. Not with the items themselves - they’re thoroughly curated and loved - but taking care of them. I’ve been thinking of just gathering them up and putting them all away for a bit, and then taking some of them out on occasion to really cherish them, and then put them away again. Not unlike Christmas decorations! I honestly think that’s the way to go for us.

This one is easy for me, as I am decor challenged and only have treasured items; beautiful bowls, my grandmother's button collection, etc. I decided a few years ago that I didn't want mass produced decor in my house. I waited months before putting anything back up because I realized I didn't really like what I had hanging (most of it had been on the walls for over 10 years) and I was mostly keeping some of it because my MIL had given it to me. I would also like to call out that in the United States if you’re looking for an agency to come pick up all the items you want to bless others with, you can call your local Salvation Army and they will schedule a free pick up. You just have to give them a list of what you’re donating in general. For example; 3 bags of clothing, 10 boxes of household items and a bookcase. Do basic box descriptions and specific furniture descriptions if you have any to donate. And Steph, I’m of course all in on the daily drawing.

They are just collecting dust up there. She loved candles. I have candles I love, and getting rid of them won't make me not remember how special she was. It was so so hard, but I just did it really fast haha. It can be so incredibly mentally tough!!! But I feel free. I haven't snatched them back out so that's a good sign haha! Hi Steph! This is a tough one when you have a spouse who wants to keep ALL of the things! Plus his decorating style is completely different! Think visual simplicity with natural, peaceful looking decor like plants vs many favorite nascar knick knacks, signed photos, blown up snap shots from 20 years ago, guilty antiques from decease relatives, etc etc etc. I understand that this is his house too and he should get to display favorite things, but there are sooo many that it's hard to manage. Any tips? On a funnier note, my mom used to have this old green pear clock. It's not something any of us kids would put on our walls, but she had it in every house and we couldn't bear to throw it away after she passed away. So my sister and I started this goofy tradition of wrapping it up at Christmas time and giving it to one of the siblings to "keep" for a year. We are a joking kind of family, so one year I wrapped about 10 boxes with scavenger hunt clues in them and made my brother work really hard to find this amazing gift. He wrapped it up and gave it back to me the next year! 😂 Maybe you could wrap up your glass thing and gift it back to your mom. Lol!

Would it work to give your husband one specific area or room in which to display his items? Really, those types of things belong in a man cave or workshop, not in the dining room. As for the antiques, if you aren’t attached to them, I’m sure they would sell.

I think meaningful, purposeful displays of collectables look much nicer than haphazard, random pieces mixed in with other stuff that looks cluttered, so fingers crossed he will agree 😁 He won't part with the antiques, even though they aren't especially sentimental to him.

My daughter and I are still going through some of her decor and toys which were displayed. It’s a slow process she can’t decide what to keep. We might have to quarantine it for 6 months and see what she misses and still likes after that long.

This is one of the hardest areas for me. But I am making some progress and have a box that is full already! I know once they are out of the house I won’t miss it at all. Thanks again for all your hard work year round, but especially this past month as you have worked so hard on your whole house. It is very helpful for people like me to hear you talk it through. Like the lanyards. It makes it real to us. I see you have the same issues we have and that there are real solutions. And I am (sadly) surprised by all the light bulb moments that occur as I watch your videos. HOW DID I NOT REALIZE SOME OF THIS BEFORE? I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ 😔. Day by day my house is getting better and better. This isn’t a race for me. I haven’t even touched my basement. Stairs are an issue for a bad knee. So hopefully this summer I can concentrate on that. But you’ve taught me that’s ok. Just get started and keep at it. Eventually I will get there. I am seeing progress. So I know what you are telling me is true! Thanks again Steph!

I feel your elephant pain! I have a couple of decorative plates tucked away in my basement that were from my grandparents but I am really not a decorative plate kind of person. My husband is, and not only did he have some of his own hanging on the walls when we got married (hunting dog puppies with dead birds!) but he has inherited an entire collection that completely encircles his grandmother's kitchen (fortunately they are still in her old house.) When we moved into our current house, I packed his away for the move and they have never seen the light of day since then. That was over 20 years ago, but one of these days he is going to go through his mess in the basement and find those plates! ;)

I finally got rid of all the candles that don't burn well bc I was so tired of scraping down the wax and trying to fix them so I've been there and definitely understand that. Now I just have one from Ikea that burns cleanly. I do not burn it often but it's nice not to have so many that do not burn well. I also decorate with plants and I love it so much better than decor that people have given you that you feel guilty about donating which now I don't feel guilty about that at all!! It's much more fun to fuss over my plants and groom them. And, I have noticed that they thrive so much when I tend to them and remove the dead 🍃🍂 and trim them... it's so much more rewarding than decor that just gets to be something you are tired of looking at. Go us!!

I have been getting rid of most of my seasonal decor (ie. Thanksgiving, Valentines, etc). If I can’t fit them into one box, I sell them. We simply don’t have the storage for multiple boxes for each holiday. It’s surprising how much we collect over the years. 😊

Here's a tip for the extra bits from scented candles ... though it may not work if you have little kids (sorry Steph!). I put some bits of scented candle/wax "melt" into a non-tippable bowl and put it under the driver's seat in my car. Now the car smells great! And it lasts for months. I had a little ceramic bowl to use, but probably a small pet dish with rubber feet would work best. Also, proud of myself because the cat got me up early this morning and I used the time to clean and reorganize my pantry! Now I have empty space. :-)

I don't have much in the way of decor, so there isn't much to declutter. I am more of a minimalist and a declutter bug by nature. But, I did just tidy up the top of my china cabinet. Someone taller that I, set our three oil lamps up there after we were thru with them this past Autumn. I'm short and need a step latter to reach! So, I left them there. Well, today after your video, I decided to, get 'er done!! And boy was it dusty up there!! Now its all clean with minimal decor that I definitely want and like there. Makes me happy to look at it!! Thank you for another of your motivating videos! They cause me to take a deeper look and and take action. Love and hugs. 💝🤗🌸🌿

Got rid of a lot of inherited items that are just not things that I like. I'll eventually get around to getting a few more things that I like to put in our home.

We just gave away some decor that we have had since we got married (almost 16 years ago) because it just felt like clutter and we'd kept it because we thought we had to since they were gifts. It really does feel good to let go of things that no longer hold value.

4 years ago we started a remodel and I took all my decor down. And I have only put a few things back. Most of it I gave to our local thrift store. Recently some friends came over for lunch, and she asked "where's all your decor - your shelves are empty!" (I have two large wall units, one of them built-in in our living room). I thought about it later, and decided that I was going to take it as a compliment. I do have a few pictures I want to rehang but I don't have any nails and I keep forgetting to buy some, so they sit on the floor below where they will hang. I'm thinking of them as unique decor.

I took down the seasonal decor and refreshed the items I had out so they look new. I don't have much decor around my house. Most of it is in my home office and they are sentimental items that I like looking at during the day as I work. I also have a collection of Mary Englebreit ceramics that I love in my office. That will stay! Thanks Steph for a fresh look at my decor!
