The Historic Cemeteries of New Orleans are historically and culturally distinctive in that they are an amalgam of the French, Spanish, and Caribbean historical influences on the city of New Orleans in addition to limitations resulting from the city's high water table. The cemeteries reflect the ethnic, religious, and socio-economic heritages of the city.
Architecturally, they are predominantly above ground tombs, family tombs, civic association tombs, and wall vaults, often in neo-classical design and laid out in regular patterns similar to city streets. They are at times referred to colloquially as “Cities of the Dead”, and some of the historic cemeteries are tourist destinations.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

A lot of our friends here were very disappointed in the cemetery that it was runned down and not maintained, a mess. I agree. But now looking back on it, I kinda feel a little differently. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think it’s beautiful in its own way. Similar to the very old cemeteries in Scotland or other parts of Europe, it seems naturally wearing away. One has to admit that there is little or no RECENT desecration (none that I have seen yet to date on two big trips here) & no recent vandalism. Now looking back on it, it really doesn’t look that ugly to me. Anyhow… still, it would be nice to see some of those damaged vaults and tombs to get fixed back up.

I was thinking the same thing, no matter how much care is given, eventually all graves will end up that way. It does seem rather natural. Almost more authentic than if it was perfectly preserved. You can really feel the history. At least watching the video. Mid way through I checked what the temperature was in New Orleans... if I was more spontaneous I would have jumped a plane and checked it out tonight lol.

Ron did you know that shells left on graves come to symbolize pilgrimage. Scallop shells were used by St James during his own pilgrimage and then by his followers in Spain during the 19th century.! Today seashells left behind on a burial site often represents a loved ones pilgrimage to the grave little token in remembrance of the journey. As always it's been a pleasure to get to your videos as soon as you post one. Stay safe & in good health. Much love for everyone! ❤

A lot of my family are buried there. Not a Catholic cemetery. My great grandfather was a sexton at the cemetery you see in the background, across the street. I believe it is run down more because it is a very high crime area. Homicides have taken place at the corner, during the day. There is more damage to it since Hurricane Ida. One of our family plots is being sealed soon. It makes me so sad to see it this way. My two older sisters died in infancy and are buried there. For a city that loves celebrating the dead, you would think they would do better.

Awesome Cemetery!! Did you know the 1999 movie Double Jeopardy with Tommy Lee Jones and Ashley Judd was filmed at the Lafayette Cemetery No.1 So sad all of these souls forgotten. Also makes you wonder if the city even has records to where people are buried as in the past if the relatives didn't pay the taxes on the crypts, they would sell them and then cremate the bodies. Also I don't think New Orleans EVER cared for their deceased.
I have been to several of those NO cemeteries, and they never fail to amaze me. Imagine what that all looked like back when it was being cared for. I guess now it's just "Oh well, they are dead so it doesn't matter". These were all living people once and deserve to be remembered and their burial vaults taken care of. Sad. Thank you for taking us along with you as you walk thru.
It’s pretty spooky during the day but I can’t imagine the energetic there at night. This one just has a chill about it.

Ron, if you get the chance to visit Louisiana again. Include visiting St Francisville. It is an amazing place with 31 cemeteries. I used to travel extensively throughout the US as a MRI and Xray systems repairman. (40 years). Often taking in cemeteries and Civil War battle sites. Both are offered in St. Francisville. Another beautiful cemetery is on the island of Oahu. The punchbowl Veterans cemetery.

I was surprised when I visited a New Orleans cemetery. After a period of time they push your bones aside and make room for the new.
So sad to see the deplorable condition of your final resting place I'm sure the families are long gone but someone should be held accountable for the disrespect of these crypts.😢😢😢😢.
Majority of cemetery is in poor condition, from the walking paths, to the vaults. It has the appearance of an abandoned, long forgotten city of the dead. It is creepy as hell during the day, can't imagine the energy at night. Talk about possible hauntings??? Never miss your videos, always professional, wonderful stories. You are doing what I've always dreamed of; traveling country seeing the architecture, stories of our history.
I was thinking the same thing, Ron. It's very sad there to see it crumbling away, but it does make me feel better that some of the crypts have flowers on them, so someone must be visiting family. I can just imagine what all those crypts and vaults would have looked like when they were new. They would have been beautiful. Thank you for showcasing the people who are buried there.
Wow, this cemetery is definitely old and it's so sad to see the condition this place is in. It makes me feel like a wrecking ball is going to be called in one day to demolish whatever's left. I feel like they don't take any pride in their cemeteries out there, just burry them and forget them. It makes me appreciate even more how well cemeteries are taken care of around here. I suppose there are some here that are neglected but I've never come across any. I'm glad our souls don't stay in our bodies when we die, this is one reason why. RIP to all.
I like the entrance to the cemetery. It gives a spooky vibe.

Yes, lots of workmanship. I really like the rock vaults.
I can't imagine looking out on that as one of those homeowners. I think I would be imagining all kinds of noises and apparitions. LOL
Grave robbers are the lowest of low people. That should get them a spot reserved in hell. It’s really sad that this cemetery is that unkept. The people that were alive picked that spot to rest in. Never would they imagined what it would be like today .

A lot of people are commenting negatively that this place is run down, but I guess I see it differently - that it is kind of a time capsule, wearing away naturally, no vandalism, no desecration’s, Maybe similar to what you would see in Europe, it’s actually not a bad thing. Well - that’s my opinion.

I love videos of cemeteries!! Sir the way you narrated the video it’s like you are talking to your friends 😊
A lot of clouds above the graveyard and some stones are starting to decay along with others being damaged. As another subscriber said it looks like it was filmed in black and white film which Ron said it was not. Together with all those elements it makes it rather eerie.
One of the comments below - ''we are destined to be forgotten''. Yes, we are. And I find this cemetery beautiful in it's way, but I wish there was more moss growing on the graves. How silly of me, lol! I'm assuming the vegetation showing through the openings was due to high winds carrying debris and it was caught in cracks etc. Thank-you for the tour, Ron. Bonne journée à toi! 🙂 (A good day to you!)
I visited Lafayette #2 back in 2014. We met the caretaker, a very nice older gentleman who showed us around a bit. I don't know what kind of budget he had to work with, but it looked like his tools were limited to a rake, some clippers and a wheel barrow. It doesn't get the attention that #1 does for sure, but he impressed me as very dedicated and respectful. I think it is still the responsibility of the deed holders (families) to care for the vaults and surrounding stonework- a kind of legal limbo when they've died off or moved away, and the reason those potentially damaging weeds are not removed. Still, I found it peaceful and as you said, beautiful in its own way. It looks about the same. Thanks for taking me back!
Nothing sadder than a cemetary that is unkempt. Such lack of respect for the dead....

In its own way this old cemetery is very pretty..❤ Folks have to remember that these old cemeteries have been through many hurricanes.
I used to work at Metairie Cemetery... they have people to do maintenance daily... most crypts that are in disarray are one of families who have died off and didn't have perpetual care... and it's a year and a day according to the body... if the body has not decomposed enough to be moved... they will have to decide on something else.
Thanks Ron.

That's the downside to having a crypt, mausoleum. Sooner or later, it might be centuries in the future, it's going to fall into disrepair. Perhaps the flat grave markers, although not as nice looking, is the way to go.
