It's an old Roman Catholic Cathedral. The crypt had originally contained the preserved remains of previous Bishops. The skull shaped glyphs indicate burials.

I agree - most likely Catholic due to the location. But as I mentioned above - it could have been Episcopalian too. They're very much alike.

I grew up Catholic while going to a Lutheran school, got married in a Presbyterian Church, and I've been to services at Lutheran, Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopalian, and non-denominational churches, and honestly, they're all similar enough that if I wasn't paying attention to Communion, and maybe on my phone for the rest... (okay, so Catholics have more holy water and incense and processionals and things), I'd be hard-pressed to tell you which was which, except for Baptist. Also, I wouldn't be on my phone during Mass, because it's rude, but anything for an example =P.

It is too small to be a cathedral and it did not appear to have a place for the Bishop's "throne". The term cathedral comes from the "throne" itself; "cathedra" in Latin means seat or chair (in this case the chair of the bishop). There is almost always just one cathedral in a Diocese and it is almost always a large church in a large city. Some dioceses have a "pro cathedral" or a second church for a bishop if the diocese is really large and he must spend time in both areas of the diocese--but these are rare exceptions. The little room behind the altar area was the sacristy where the church linens and the clergy vestments and vessels / candles, etc. were kept. You could see the remainder of the large "cupboard" which had long drawers to place church linens in. I doubt any of the tombs were the graves of bishops. It is more likely that they were tombs of families who helped found or build the church. The first stained glass window appeared to be of St. Francis of Assisi and the second--not completely seen--may be of the Blessed Mother. What ever happened to this parish church that it was abandoned? A new building somewhere else that removed and used the bells, crucifix, statues, etc.? And the graves abandoned to possible looters? Where was this old parish church located? The stained glass windows alone--if they had not already been vandalized by stones--would have been worth a lot of money. Very sad.

Leslie, my dear friend, ONLY YOU could view a fecal-covered, broken organ in an abandoned centuries -old church and say "it's covered in bird poop but it's still beautiful!" You are definitely one of a kind!! And may I agree 100% ..... Builders and specialized craftsman in general were certainly skilled! The time it must've taken to do this....amazing! And what kind of church would have skills and such IN the floors!? That place is a bit creepier than others I've seen you go into. Disquieting. Be well and safe travels.

@Rose Treiger Wow! I've read almost all the comments and it seems we are the only one knowing that!!!! It's sad he haven't taken the time to clean the inscriptions and filmed them. I'd really like to know which church it is to do some deeper research. Authorities might have said they were doing archeological investigations here but it clearly looks more like they came to take/remove something important or that they didn't wanted to be found by the people. ;)

At least it makes living not so boring and I get to see places I otherwise wouldn't. My Mother used to take me to graveyards when I was a kid. Some of my happiest memories of my Mom. skull and cross bones used common in that time era in the religious faith . That man is Dust and dust we shall return . That our time here is short compared to eternity. In The New England states The Skull and cross bones can be found on many of the graves before the 1750s and can after wards be found with angel wings with faces . each stone told a story for the generations to come . What you have uncovered in Ireland is amazing as many of the catholic crypts Priest and Monks were Buried in the Church as each one that server or group had passed on to their Reward. Your so lucky to have that kind of Historic Knowledge where you are from and its a Gift to find it and come across it . I can not believe that it was disturbed 20 years ago as you never disturb The Priests or Monks Tombs or do what they have done . You were well protected in your discovery and documentation even if you have no Christian Belief . Awesome Video . Guys .
