As a relative of Mercy and the Brown family as a whole, I thank you for telling the truth about what happened to her. It's annoying to hear everybody say that she was an actual vampire, and then continue with these crazy stories about her. My grandfather had to go to the cemetery every Halloween and protect the grave because people would come and vandalize it. Sadly he passed away recently, but can be found diagonally across Mercy's grave: Richard Brown

@@blazineyezasian____ I wouldn’t be able to answer that because this happened in the 1800’s, and I wasn’t born yet; but she had tuberculosis which was an unknown, but not uncommon disease at the time. Coughing up blood was the key piece of “evidence” which led people to believe that she was a vampire.

*Christopher Cromwell* Is it any more insane than taking a 2-month-old corpse of a woman who died in _January_ out of a crypt _in Rhode Island_ and deciding that since the body had hardly decomposed, she was a _vampire?_ I presume Rhode Island gets just as cold as every other New England state, like _all_ those in northern latitudes? That's the same sort of clear-as-mud ruling that if a suspected witch drowns from being ducked underwater, she's innocent...

Very interesting video, thank you Chris. Kind of funny how the locals figured she must have been a vampire because of very little or no decomp after 2 months, never mind the fact that it was in the frozen winter cold in an above-ground crypt. She was probably a popsicle, so of course she wouldn't be decomposing. But, when people get it in their head about something silly, they run with it.

Fascinating story, there was so much folk lore back then, and it's amazing what was done for remedies to the problem.. The place where Mercy's body was kept, was a body storage during the winter due to the ground being to hard to dig. It made sense her body would be preserved, it would be frozen in a preserved state. TB would bring up blood when coughing, often found on pillows, and cloths, which brought the idea they were vampires due to blood in their mouths, and on other items. Thanks Chris, it was a good one.

If Mercy died in January, and she couldn't be buried because the ground was frozen, why was anyone surprised that her body wasn't badly decomposed? She was very likely frozen at least part of the time she'd been in the crypt.

Technically it is not called a crypt but a keep and was used to temporarily store the corpses of those who died in winter when the ground was too hard for burial. Remember back in the day graves were dug by hand so when November, December, January, February and even March the soil was to frozen to penetrate. This was prevalent in the New England area. When spring rolled around bodies were transferred to the permanent gravesites.

I visit the gravesite of mercy brown all the time. There are never flies around her headstone. It's a well kept cemetery because the church is still open to parishioners. Her grave is set in steel to avoid being robbed. Her crypt is now cemented & you cannot go in it. You can open the door buy you'll open it to cement. The cemetery is very haunted though. She comes out at her grave at night, I do have photos. She did just about drain my cell phone battery. I did capture other phenomena there as we walked.

So I just googled a little bit and I just read The stone was already unattached from vandalism and in 1996 it was stolen and it was returned a week later and that’s when the metal bracket was put on. I never knew it was stolen but I do remember it being broken before the metal bracket was there.

But, did like going to historic graves sites( Rhode Island, especially rural like in Kent County has a lot of them. Many right in backyards). It was sad to see the high mortality rate of children.
