@@lakeozarkrei3767 I'm pretty sure ABC NBC and CBS came long before fox. Same shit, different 3 letter propaganda tool for lame politicos.
Back when I was a young boy my grandma told me what happened that day. There was no social media (no TV just radio) so when people left work they went to the local bars to socialize before going home to dinner. That was their social media at the time. It was a daily habit for most people. So my grandfather was 3-4 beers to the good when the broadcast was caught on the air at the bar. The whole bar emptied in a flash. My grandfather rushed home half drunk came running in the house grabbed his rifle and screamed aliens are attacking turn on the radio. i think he was pissed he had to leave the bar early when they found out it was fake lol. But it was a story he never lived down. A real treasure to us.
I’ve listened to Orson Welles’s broadcast of War of the Worlds. Very well done and quite entertaining. Of course, it was blown out of proportion as most people didn’t believe aliens were attacking Earth, but it’s defiantly interesting to hear how some people believed the broadcast was real. It’s cool to see the location of where the broadcast began. Thanks for the video Chris, keep up the great work and take care!

The newspaper stories were actually meant to discredit radio broadcasts as they were threatened by radio as a news source.

I’ve been fascinated with everything surrounding The War of the Worlds for the longest time! My introduction to it was via the famous Jeff Wayne album from 1978 (that’s what most Brits immediately think of when you ask them what is The War of the Worlds, in the same way that you’d ask that question in the States they’d say either the Spielberg movie or the radio show). I learned the album was based on a book, read the book and couldn’t put it down, the themes of imperialism and mankind getting itself annihilated before it could learn how to properly preserve itself, and above all the commentary on how man treats his fellow man and his brothers in the animal kingdom, that’s what always drew me back to reading it time and time again, that and the cool alien technology and the suspenseful urgent way he depicts the invasion. Being a kid at the time, I also collect numerous graphic novels based on the story, remember Dark Horse did one that was really faithful to the novel. Once I was old enough and watched the Spielberg movie and was gripped yet again, I have my problems with that movie, but for any flaws it genuinely does a remarkable job at capturing most of the book’s tone, and for that reason it’s one of my favourite films. Then after all that and several documentaries, I got round to listening to the infamous 1938 radio broadcast. And yet again I found myself fascinated, by just everything around it. I have learned since that the extent of people panicking in their millions has been debated, and become something of an urban legend and that the newspapers at the time exaggerated the numbers quite a bit, and that the broadcast when it aired actually had relatively few listeners. But the timing and irony of the broadcast (a fictional story of a seemingly unstoppable invasion, just as WW2 and Hitler’s dream of dominating Europe was around the corner), the genius behind the production of it (the uses of silence and pauses, using real locations as HG Wells did, the lack of commercial breaks) never ceases to fascinate me. Interesting connection as well: Spielberg who made his own WOTW production of course, owns a framed copy of the radio broadcast’s script. The most recent WOTW related thing I’ve done, living in the UK and all, is visit Horsell Common near Woking outside London, the setting of the first Martian landing in Wells’ book, and I could see why he picked it. Very scenic, very eerie place, great for a morning stroll! Anyway I never knew that there was really anything to be seen relating to the broadcast so thanks for making the video!
Awesome piece of trivia!
Yeah it was 1938. People now have little or no understanding of what it was like back then. Nobody ever had to lock their doors at night. It was safe to walk anywhere anytime, especially kids. Radio had programs that the whole family would gather to listen to in the evening and imagine ( not see) the stories. It was captivating and families would be in suspense by the episodes. . Gas was like 10 cents a gallon and mom n pop stores were on street corners. No shopping malls. If you wanted to go and do real clothes shopping you got on a bus on the weekend (15 cents) and went downtown (the city) to explore and discover. It was also real family oriented time when all your relatives would gather on the weekend to have a cookout together to socialize and share. Radio by "Queen" is the best expression of the lost times.

Well back then it would have been very real to those listening to this broadcast. We can look back and see the funny side of this but can just imagine the panic it would have caused. I bought the LP of the broadcast of 'War of the Worlds' years ago now. Used to play it quite often and it really sounds real cause you get quite engrossed in the story also seen the movie a few times too.
Thank you, Chris! ❤️
I remember learning about this in primary school, the whole class had to read the book and listen to the radio recording. I went to school in Tasmania, Australia.
I have always been fascinated by this radio broadcast. In lots of radio areas at the time had the finishing of a baseball game, as it is playoffs time, which caused listeners to miss the beginning "disclaimer" of being a radio show. Also Orson Welles was known to be very into his work. The cast had practiced this show for a few days and he felt the actors were getting too comfortable in their roles. So he purposely handed out new scripts for the actors an hour before airtime. He wanted the audience to catch the fear and nervousness in the actors voice. It worked great! Thank you for showing the locations of this show.
Long since been one of my very favourite tales. Loved the music for years and years and years. Saw the stage play as well. Thanks for this episode xx

Just came across this video. My first introduction to War of the Worlds was the 1953 George Pal film. I read about the 1938 Orson Welles radio broadcast around the same time. I remember watching a television series about War of the Worlds as a child as well. This was around 1988-89. Truly amazing how far the H.G. Wells novel was ahead of its time.
I never even gave that a thought that "we interrupt this program" was pretty serious at that time like NOAA Weather Radio going off saying there's a warning of nuclear attack when there is none. And I know some people say that's a weather broadcasting thing will. they also broadcast other dangers
Great upload Chris love this , thanks for sharing , Brian in Ireland 🇮🇪

What a tribute to Welles talent that people believed and panicked. What a shame they removed the plaque at the old Mercury theater.
That was very cool to see the town they were referring too. Thanks so much. I love your stories and facts you share.
Thanks for bringing this old drama back to life - looks like a lovely town. Can't help wondering if it was repeated how many would still fall for it? It did sound pretty scary if you've ever heard the original. Keep safe! - There are missing planes over Lake Michigan & in several cases even the search plane was lost never to be found - one around St Joe other incidents in the UP on Lake Superior - could make for some dramatic stories & the Lakeshore would be scenic locations once winter departs. @@TugIronChief At the time, there was intense competition between radio and newspapers to be the more reliable source of news. Some newspapers saw this as an opportunity to discredit radio news and therefore ran stories vastly overstating the amount of panic that actually occurred. One reason why there wasn't much panic is simply that not many people were listening to the broadcast as it aired opposite a far more popular program. Interesting note: some people who tuned in late thought the US indeed under attack - by Nazi Germany, something quite possible in 1938.

I dont think people understand the magnitude of worry something so goofy could cause, when there was nearly no way to contact anyone unless you were lucky enough to have a phone, even then you didnt have many resources. Besides this was still a time of modern warfare. It doesn't sound too much different than screaming fighter planes or the massive guns that had come around recently. Aside from the aliens lol Ever since ive had an interest in planes, ive always wondered what it was like for soldiers in the air or anyone on the ground the hear the Messerschmitt Me 262 (the first operational jet engine fighter) ripping through the skies. Now that is alien
People were listening to the Chase & Sandborne Hour on NBC with Edgar Bergan and Charlie McCarthy, which was far more popular than the Mercury Theatre on CBS, and missed the disclaimer. However, Nelson Eddy, the resident singer on Bergan's show, sang a very unpopular song, so millions of people switched to CBS, and tuned into Orson Wells already in progress.
Good one and thank you. Like 🙂
Amazing. Thank you. Is a wonderful trip
It might help to remember that there were two unusual things going on back then. First, Americans were nerved up about the rumors of war in Europe...and 'war talk' was everywhere - ESPECIALLY on the radio. The second thing was the horrific Hurricane of 1938 that slammed into Long Island, then plowed up through Connecticut, Vermont and Quebec, destroying many old trees and houses in Montreal. However, the storm was so big that it just about destroyed little Rhode Island, Cape Cod and Boston (the 'excepted' death toll was 700, but many believed it was much higher). What got people was that there was no warning - not even a hint. A large hurricane had passed over Florida a few days previously and was thought to have dissapated in the Atlantic. So this monster storm hit...with no warning...5 weeks before the "War of the Worlds" broadcast. These things made Americans understandably unsettled and susseptable to ANY news coming down the wire.
Before my time but sure my parents were tuned in to the radio in their NJ residences.
I've heard the original years ago and there definitely was an announcement at the beginning of the broadcast...
