THESE TOURS:
The Historic Cemeteries of New Orleans are historically and culturally distinctive in that they are an amalgam of the French, Spanish, and Caribbean historical influences on the city of New Orleans in addition to limitations resulting from the city's high water table. The cemeteries reflect the ethnic, religious, and socio-economic heritages of the city.
Architecturally, they are predominantly above ground tombs, family tombs, civic association tombs, and wall vaults, often in neo-classical design and laid out in regular patterns similar to city streets. They are at times referred to colloquially as “Cities of the Dead”, and some of the historic cemeteries are tourist destinations.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

When I was in New Orleans...I learned the meaning behind the saying... I WOULDN'T TOUCH YOU WITH A 10 FOOT POLE...they use a ten foot pole to push back the remains to make room for the newly deceased family member!!! So interesting...thank you...

The step graves, also known as copings. They are not dug very deep in many instances due to the high water table which is typically 3 feet below ground level. Wooden caskets are only permitted in step graves. Whenever an internment occurs where remains are already present (1 year and 1 day rule), the casket is exhumed if intact. The skeletal remains are removed and typically bagged and replaced in the bottom of the grave. The new internment is then completed. If you look at the top soil--gravel, on some of the older step graves you may see evidence of skeletal relics, vertebrae relics are easiest to spot. If you wish to see how a step grave or tomb are prepared for a burial, come to the cemetery early in the morning and you can witness preparations taking place. The tombs typically have two vertical tiers (vaults) . Beneath the lower vault there is a 3 foot deep void below where an additional internment may take place as well as where remains are placed after removal from either of the upper vaults during internment of a new death. It is not unusual for the lower void is flooded with water due to the high water table in New Orleans. If you haven't check out Odd Fellow Rest Cemetery, it is a must see. Oven wall tombs, Cast iron vaults and caskets. Located at corner of Canal Street and City Park Avenue.

When I lived in New Orleans I wanted to visit the cemeteries but I never did. They remind me of the cemeteries in Puerto Rico. I started watching your videos about 6 months ago and it got me into visiting some families and friends that are buried in Chicago. I got to visit the grave of my grandmother that died on December 22, 1975 and buried at the Elmlawn Cemetery. It took me 47 years to visit her grave and it was very emotional for me. The section where she is buried most of the headstones were covered with grass. But hers was cleaned and I know no one visits her. I did cleaned a Veteran’s headstone and put a flag. I’m going back and place flowers and flags for those that are forgotten. Thank you for sharing! ❤️

When my grandmother was buried in Lafayette No. 2 (New Orleans) in 1995, I got to look inside of her dug up grave. They dug out half of one side and dug very deep. Maybe 6-7 feet. She was the last to be buried within that plot. Several others were buried there before her. You could see “layers” of dirt. Each layer looked different in texture. I don’t know how else to describe it. So I would assume they “stack”.

Your cemetery tours are always calming and relaxing. When I used to visit NOLA often, I spent a lot of time in the various cemeteries. An elderly neighbor told me where her grandfather was buried and asked me to make a rubbing for her. Her son got me the paper from a local cemetery. Wouldn't you just know it! He was in the tippytop row! My daughter stood on a 55 gal drum trash can and could barely reach it. It was worth it. The lady was delighted.

I looked it up and this is what I got, pertaining to Louisiana-- Any cemetery or other person digging graves for underground interments shall dig sufficiently deep to allow for at least two feet of soil to cover the entire area of the casket, unless the said interment is in a burial vault, coping or lawn crypt.

My mom was the caretaker of many family graves and my sister and I grew up going to many cemeteries with her to clean them, weed them and plant flowers. When I go back to Michigan to visit my sisters we make the rounds and put flowers. My oldest sister does the clean up now. Teaching my daughter the family history that she’s been able to use in school during history class. Especially her great, great uncle fighting in Russia during WWI,My dad serving during WWII,my first cousins fighting in the Korean and Vietnam wars. So many people have no idea the history that lies in cemeteries.

It's so interesting to see these cemeteries down there, but I would never want to be buried in them. They look so overcrowded, and I like my space 😅 maybe it just appears that way because they are all above ground, but I also kind of miss the grass too. I think it adds so much serenity and beauty to the landscape. I agree with you that the best kept up cemeteries are Catholic ones. I'm looking forward to seeing the Catholic cemeteries in Arizona when you get there. Thanks for the walk Ron, always interesting and enjoyable!

I'm going to be buried at the VA cemetery. They really take care of them there. Ron this would be a great segment on this whole burial process. I'm like you I have loads of questions. Like are you buried in a casket or box and then what happens to that when someone get buried after. If you don't have a "Family " vault are just random people get buried in the same place? I would love a mini docuseries on this. From how does one plan all the way to after a year and day or when someone gets buried with someone else.

New Orleans had a very large population of Irish immigrants and many of their names are on these gravestones. A clue is that the Church is St. Patrick. I don't know if this relates to the 'steps', but New Orleans houses in the old sections were built up to the sidewalk and no porches. Families would sit on the 'steps' and visit with neighbors and friends. Probably not related but the steps do provide a place for a cemetery wanderer to rest.

Graves only have to have 2 feet of soil above the casket/vault in the US. However, in NOLA, the water table is so high, if you dig down a few feet the ground becomes soggy and the coffin will float. They just have to be covered with soil if buried. There really is no minimum.
