Holt Cemetery is a potter's field cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is located next to Delgado Community College, behind the right field fence of the college's baseball facility, Kirsch-Rooney Stadium. The cemetery is named after Dr. Joseph Holt, an official of the New Orleans Board of Health (famously involved with city health issues concerning Storyville, the Red-light district of New Orleans) who officially established the cemetery in the 19th century.
Holt Cemetery is one of the Historic Cemeteries of New Orleans.

Ron you were talking about wooden caskets and deteriorating quickly. My ex-wife is a Greek citizen and she told me about funerals in Greece and how different they are from here. She said that when you die the bury you in a casket but there is no bottom in it just slats so you don’t fall out. They also do not use makeup or embalming. If you are killed say in an auto accident and your body is damaged they don’t fix it up. They fill the casket with flowers to the point that only your face is visible. I know this to be true because she would get Greek newspapers and there would be pictures in the paper of deceased’s people. Just thought you might like to hear some info on other funeral rights practiced in other country’s.

@@estellegabriel505 I’ve seen the flower thing in the Greek newspapers my ex read . Keep in mind that my ex is 75 years old and maybe they did that at some point in her life. My ex was extremely religious so I don’t think she would ever lie. It was me who ruined the marriage, biggest mistake of my life. I also saw a special that some years ago in Greece after a period of time they would dig the person up and drink wine out of there loved ones skull. That’s sickening to me but I remember it, one of those discovery type shows. My ex was from Agrinion.

Considering that I have had chickens for most of my short-lived life I, like you, would never turn my back on an unfamiliar (or even familiar) rooster but he seemed sweet enough- probably thought you had food or was seeking protection from the crow. Loved the tour, though it is such a shame to see graves, if not the whole cemetery falling in such a state of disrepair.

We have a way here in Iceland to prevent that much collapse, when the filling of the grave has started and all funeral guests have gone they push the showel of the machine used to dig and fill down into the grave until the coffin breaks then it will not create as big hole when it collapse more. I yhink its clever as we are not going to use that body anymore

Where i use to life the old graveyard had a peacock roaming around, a true graveyard friend. The person who owned the peacock had tried many ways to keep him off the graveyard but the people visiting kinda grew fond of him so when he couldnt get him to not go there when he was out he was allowed to go around there. Gentle soul that peacock when he passed the town made a special plack for him that is still at this graveyard till this day. This rooster probable just as much of a graveyard guide as any other creatures that leave on or near graveyards haha.

I live in Germany and we have a completely different cemetery system here than in the US. The cemetery in your video shows a problem when graves are really created for eternity. After a few decades there is no one to take care of a grave. Often it certainly does not last decades. And then a city must permanently take over the costs for the maintenance of the graves.

Many cemeteries these days require that, no matter what a casket is made of, they be buried in a vault. This prevents the ground from sinking and they can run heavy equipment across the graves without fear of collapsing. That side door on the crematorium is for removing what is left of the media burned to cremate the bodies. You can see the firebrick lining. Many fireplaces have external doors to clean out the ashes.

Thats what their called and he had baby ones he was a young rooster. The older ones get attitudes some of them do depends on the hens. But their spurs get real big and long and can do some damage. Then after awhile they loose them and grow new ones. Dew claws ate what cats and dogs have. I used to have chickens and roosters, I miss them they were so entertaining. Now I have 12 cats and two horses, I love animals. Thanks Ron

I wonder why every cemetery in New Orland's seems to bury their dead on top of each, meaning super close to each other. other. It's strange to see some pretty nice stones among all the damaged ones. I feel like cemeteries should give family members peace and tranquility in the surroundings that their loved ones are buried in, but I don't see any of that in New Orleans that make me feel that way. It's still really great to see cemeteries in other areas like this. It sure gives me a greater appreciation for the beautiful cemeteries around Chicagoland. What a difference..... Ps - the rooster just wanted his 5 minutes of fame. They're proud like that 😅

Exactly I feel like NO makes sure it keeps the "tourist" cemeteries jist fine unless a storm does them damage but these smaller ones get ZERO ATTENTION.and then seeing new graves being done makes me sad ...😢...ptobably buried next to spouse from purchasing years ago but cemeteries should NEVER BE FORGOTTEN and have such damage. Ron did mention they have money invested in repairs and I am sure the work is tedious but it is still sad. Not as bad as SWEET OLIVE which was an UTTER DISGRACE

Funny how the rooster kept up with you. The crows were loud. That old tree was really beautiful.

I was sitting in the parking lot one day, waiting for my daughter to get out of school (Delgado). I thought I’d go and take a look inside the cemetery because I have relatives there. A few feet in and I turned around because I was the only one in there and I noticed some of the graves were open. My grandfather used to go and clean it. There was a newspaper article about him.

Hi Ron. Can you imagine operating a crematorium in these days ?? Wow. Talk about unwanted pollution !!! Seems the rooster was making sure you left " his " area. One attacked me when i was about nine. I ended having to defend myself. I had a 2x4. It didn't. I won😊 take care and God bless to all.

I really enjoyed this cemetery walk, Ron ! The conditions in this cemetery were variable but by and large, it was an uplifting experience to follow you around. People are doing what they can to keep it manageable and the hand made and decorated graves were Ok by me. It represents people doing what they can with what they have and that is touching in my eyes at least. Loved that gorgeous old tree with the Spanish moss hanging on it. Think of all the human activity it has seen over the years, it would be great if it could talk! As for the rooster, what a handsome specimen he is and I suspect he was relatively friendly. Maybe some visitors feed him on occasion. I suspect that the crows can give him a hard time , maybe territory squabbles?? Thanks again for taking us through this cemetery!

This was a fascinating and amusing video. Chickens roam around many areas in New Orleans, so I'm not surprised you encountered Mr Rooster. I guess it's a bit like Key West in that regard. They seem to be very adept at taking care of themselves. As for Holt Cemetery, I had no idea it existed until you posted this video. I've driven past that area many times, so this was a real eye opener. I guessed it was near City Park because the moss draped live oaks thrive in that area. Loved the seriocomic aspect of this one! 👻😆🐓
