    I've noticed a lot of people in the martial arts community underestimate many martial artists simply because they've "never been in the ring". A person can develop amazing power, speed, accuracy, timing and toughness without ever formally competing in the ring or in the cage. Bruce Lee had an extensive amount of all of those things. I do feel that people who actually fight for real are gonna be the best fighters, but it's never a guarantee when going up against someone like Lee who put so much time into his training. Another good example is Joe Rogan, he hasn't done very much competitive fighting and not for a long time as far as I'm aware. But I would totally bet on him versus a lot of professional UFC fighters honestly. Just my opinion.

    Joe Lewis was voted in 1983 the greatest Karate champion ever with Norris and Bill Wallace second. You could argue for any of them. But, Joe Lewis, who pretty much started modern kickboxing, said that Bruce was by far the best martial artist - "by far." You can see it on video. Lewis became his student - not vice versa. Norris, also a champion, never wanted to say if he or Bruce was better, but he was extremely complimentary about Bruce's abilities. Jim Kelly, also a karate champion (and in Enter the Dragon) also indicated that Bruce was the best. Bill Wallace said maybe someone like Sugar Ray Leonard was faster. Well, that's pretty good company. Like most things we can never know for sure, but, certainly he was an unique martial artist who changed the sport - even without competing, for everyone.

I know guys that are nowhere near as good as them and they leave the dojo covered in bruises. Steve laughed and said that a lot of acting is playing a type - McQueen himself chose roles to highlight his strengths - and to keep his dialogue short, sweet and quotable Chuck took that to heart, and knew his skills would attract the attention of children as well as adults. The anti-hero, hard-drinking, womanising archetype was big at the time, and Chuck decided to go against the grain. "When I got into the film business, my aim was to adopt a positive persona, of a guy who fights against injustice. And it saved me, because my acting was atrocious to say the least!" So he's always played the old fashioned "cowboy' type...respectful to women, never cusses in front of children, has a code of honour he follows. Bruce Lees movies were the fist to work in the US theatre market, and became the prototype for later martial arts movies. That cemented his fame as the genre really never got huge. Norris was in the first batch of the action movies (usually heroes with guns that fight sometimes). That market got huge for a while, was crowded and Norris was a little overshadowed by higher budget movies from Sylvester and Arnold. Cobra, Lone Wolf McCaid, Delta Force and cameos in Expendables are the Norris movies I can name.

    A large part of my memory of the past martial arts before my time was from all the old Black Belt magazines my teacher had, magazines from when Chuck was champ as well as an amazing group of great fighters from the 60s through the 70s, while the 80s transitioned into a different era and we'd never have that large comminity of brutality again for Asian martial arts- Korean generals were still active, Judo was rough, Japanese masters were guys with limbs of steel, hands and feet like a mace weapon lol, Karate folks were real solid, a lot of folks were coming back from the Vietnam war and were extremely rugged, very hardened. There was a lot of contact sparring competition too. And I would look toward the back of the magazines to see the listings of tournaments held and who competed and did what and there would be little articles and write-ups about some of the competitions- I remember it was common for blood to be drawn and I remember the competition was fierce- fighters prided themselves on being hardcore- there was a high percentage of very realistic, effective and usable Asian martial arts, before the McDojo thing got out of control etc. I'm pretty sure it wasn't usually full contact but that semi-contact was still very rough, fighters were conditioned well back then too so their version of "semi-contact" was still rough. I've also been through it myself- the old school way was still prevalent, sparring with no equipment, contact sparring but not full force, also to the face but pull back/no contact to the face. Of course we still got hit in the face but there was always enough skill so that no one lost any teeth :)

    Let’s forget Chuck Norrsi for moment. Bruce was highly regarded by everyone in the martial arts back then even though he didn’t actually fight competitively. For someone to receive that kind of respect DESPITE not fighting in tournaments , well it says a lot about his ability, wouldnt you say? Joe Lewis - who won more heavyweight hjampionships that Chuck Norris at that time and who actually went on to fight in full contact bouts - has said Bruce punched like a heavyweight and was the fasted guy he had ever come across. Lee’s style was.a combination of pratical techniques gleened from various martial arts. Put all these pieces together and I think it is safe to assume Bruce Lee would have done very well in MMA and would have been just as good as Chuck Norris if not better.

    Hi Ramsey, I have some questions if and when you are able to answer. I'm looking to start training Martial arts, specifically bjj and later muay Thai, but due both to quarantine laws and financial issues, I'm not certain when I'll be able to start training. In the meantime, do you have any books, DVD or other media you would recommend for a beginner to gain at least an understanding of the fundamental techniques and / or concepts of the arts? I understand that I'll not be able to learn the art through books alone, but anything to give a head start or edge would be appreciated. I also wanted your opinion on grapple dummies for training grappling alone, as I may not have someone to train with outside of class time, but I want to spend as much time training as possible, as I'd like to advance as far as possible and eventually compete in one or both Arts. Thank you in advance for any insight, and I apologise for the length of my comment. Love your videos by the way

    Fun fact: Norris only competed in touch/point karate because full contact means he would shatter his opponents to oblivion. No contact means he would stare at his opponents until their minds melted. Chuck chose the safest path for his opponents with point karate so although they could get hurt, no one dies. See, Chuck is nice and considerate.

    Ramsey, when Bruce Lee's movies came out there was a cultural explosion wanting Kung Fu style movies. This was a large factor in Bruce's popularity and legend, let's be honest. As far a Chuck Norris goes, he was in "actual" fights and was world's champion. Let's not belittle that, MMA did not exist during that time period and was not en vouge, so apples and oranges. I grew up during the 80s, while not a Norris fanboy, I can cite several movies and there were quite good in the action genera. Hero and the Terror, The Octagon, Missing in Action, A Force of One, FireWalker (funny as heck), Invasion U.S.A, Lone Work McQuade, etc... Long and short, several dozen movies to his credit....and yes he most likely would have been able to take Bruce due to his combat experience. Simple practice vs speculation.

    You're wrong and not giving Bruce enough credit.. Bruce trained extensively just like in military how to survive in real combat, street fighter. Bruce manhandled Chuck in a full contact. Billy Cheung and Bustillo were there. And the apology letter from Chuck to Bruce. And in that letter, Chuck acknowledged Bruce was the superior fighter. Just because Chuck trained in Military combat doesn't go far if the opponent like Bruce has higher IQ, much faster, vast knowledge in different skills and disciplines. Ramsey Dewey is not thinking, Bruce if competed would train and adapt to modern style fighting.

    I did love the fact that Bruce Lee’s choreography was so different from other stylized martial arts movies of the time, ala Shaw bros stuff ( although I love those movies as well). But Bruce definitely brought a sense of realism that was unlike anything else. To me, the fight between Bruce and chuck in Return is still my hands down favorite of all time. It was so Epic! I also liked a lot of the Norris movies as well. A force of one, the octagon, good guys wear black etc. I guess I appreciate each artist for their particular contributions. Hey coach, you ever see Billy Jack? I think I was about 4 years old when I saw that movie, and it was the first time I had seen the martial arts on the big screen. I think a lot of folks forget about that film. I recently watched a couple of the fight scenes from that movie and I think they were pretty good for its time. What’s your opinion on the Billy Jack stuff?

    Long comment alert, Mr Dewey. Coincidentally, I was JUST re-listening to your video last night of “Who would win in a fight: Bruce Lee or Muhammad Ali”. So part of this current video’s answer is obvious: Norris would win. Bigger guy, more experience fighting under actual pressure, etc. But when it comes to onscreen, I’d say Lee. He really knew how to sell his movements (but not so great at selling received strikes a la Stallone / Balboa). He was graceful, fluid, and light without seeming weak and submissive. His kicks reached full extension most of the time and retracted back like pistons and both his (slowed-down) hand strikes and kicks were lighting fast. And he was chiseled! Norris on the other hand kind of lumbered along. There was weight behind his blows but going from real to cinematic fighting without a solid target to land on took him down a notch visually. Still, it was a nice contrast: Lightning vs the bigger (and harrier!), more muscular dinosaur. If not for this difference, it would be more like Scott Adkins vs Michael Jai White or whoever: Muscular, fast, & acrobatic vs muscular, fast, & acrobatic. Still good but less contrast.

    When Bruce Lee heard that Chuck was telling ppl that Bruce wasn't his teacher Bruce got pissed. Chuck Norris was scared so he wrote Bruce a very apologetic letter. You can find the letter on the internet. I'm not gonna link it here cuz youtube would think i'm a bot. Bruce was a far superior fighter despite their size difference. If he wasn't so good Chuck Norris and Joe Lewis wouldn't have become his student. And Chuck would've schooled Bruce instead of writing him an apologetic letter.

    The strange thing is that in the book " The Legendary Bruce Lee " (if what I say here makes any difference at all) Chuck Norris talks in very unambiguous and respectfull words about Bruce Lee. It may even sound as if he thinks Bruce was more skillfull than himself and way ahead of his time. He even mentions that the long conversation they had after a demonstration in Long Beach California was something that he didn´t involve himself in very often, but that he did in this case because he felt that Bruce had a lot to offer both mentally and physically. If that is true and Chuck Norris actually said this and it is not something made up by sensation-journalism then Bruce must have been damned good when we consider that Chuck Norris was at world championship-level for that time.

    Chuck Norris was a Karate and Taekwondo world champion several times, so he widely proven how much skilled and strong he was. Bruce Lee never had a career in martial arts, never took place in tournaments. This leads us to conclude he was less skilled in real fighting because he never trained for this purpose. Anyway, from a technical point of view, I think Lee was much better than Norris: faster and smooth movements, higher precision and coordination. I won't say Norris doesn't deserve his champion titles, of course. I would be crazy to sentence this. Anyway, I think also in a coreographed fighting Norris proved to be clearly slower and less smooth than Lee. Lee kicks were faster, had a better extension and agility. Summing up I would say Norris proved to be a better fighter in real life: the ring speaks for him. Lee was a better martial artist as he proved on the set. So, my answer is... If Lee trained himself to fought in real full-contact tournaments, woud have been better than Norris also in real life fightings? It is really, really, hard to say but... likely yes. The cat? Well, he would have killed both without any training!

  • @RamseyDewey

    @RamseyDewey

    4 жыл бұрын

    Breathing is key. Usually stiff fighters aren’t breathing. Focus on exhaling with the movement- especially punching. Exhale percussively with the punches, and the body will automatically breathe in at the correct intervals. Another reason fighters have a hard time relaxing in sparring is PTSD from taking too much damage from hard sparring. With those guys, you have to retrain their minds with light sparring. And in addition to breathing, a huge reason for not being able to relax is inexperience. Fighting is super stressful by nature. It takes a long time to adapt to that level of combat stress.

    Chuck Norris is not to be disrespectful to, he was one of the greatest martial artist in his prime time, he and Bruce has opened lots of martial artist eyes, they both was good friends, they sometimes trained and sparred together so Chuck had a great understand of Bruce's style of martial arts that why he worked with him.... Chuck know that Bruce was very good with his crafts and styles, they both work hard to own their status in this world and that's something worth respecting them for. Now when it comes to movies yes Bruce had a bigger impact on the world because he was the first to introduce his styles of martial arts that looks more realistic that anyone can catch on to, and was eagerly wanting to learn and developed, because it was mix martial arts at birth. And Bruce was at his best he was always learning and adding new styles to his martial arts he introduced some of the greatest speed, techniques on earth that not have been seen before his time and we all love him for that.... thanks master Lee. When Bruce passes master Norris went on to make some great movies, still about martial arts and on survival so he will always be remembered as one of the greatest of them all. Every great martial artist i believe have something to teach and something they did that many people love.... and so respecting martial artist is my way of life. Ramsey, you are always respectful, diplomatic, but honest in your answers. When Bruce Lee was alive, Joe Lewis, Mike Stone, and Chuck Norris all "trained with" him. While these guys were taller and heavier than Lee, it is unlikely that they were faster. The only person of that era that most people know that would have beaten Lee would be Gene LeBell, a mountain of a man who had tons of experience.
