I think he was referring to his own idea that the afterlife is contained within this life. I think it has something to do with some Jewish beliefs that there actually is not life after dying. So by saying "we all believe in afterlife", he is saying, "we all believe in life." He isn't quite clear about it but he does really quickly say what he means and if you are aware of those Jewish ideas then it is a bit easier to tell what he is trying to say. Very very "sneaky" just like the rest of the.... religious communities.

He isn't referring to "consciousness after death" if you listen carefully he does explain that although briefly and not clearly. In his second time speaking in this video he even says that Jewish doctrine doesn't teach the existence of afterlife. So he is pretty much arguing in the affirmative for something he doesn't and actually isn't really supposed to believe or at least something for which he isn't supposed to hold any specific belief according to his religion. Religion makes people do nutty things like debate christopher hitchens on a topic you don't even believe in. He's crazy. Another thing often associated with the religious.

I deeply regret not being a fan of Christopher Hitchens's while he was alive, and I'm even more embarrassed to say that I misunderstood him for many years. Getting to know him these last few weeks as I've engulfed myself in his work has been transformative, and even to a very personal effect, like coming to know someone who was always a friend, but that I was simply too damned ignorant to realize. I haven't had it in me to watch these debates and lectures where he is nearing the end of his life, and now that I tried watching the first few minutes of this one, I can say with confidence I'm still not quite ready yet. I look back on his appearances with awe, and sometimes I laugh, a man among men. I wish I had a 10th of his intellect. He opens with a bit of double speak. When he says "we all believe in afterlife" what he actually means is "we all believe in life" if you listen closely he does define what he means. This is why christopher opens with the analogy of pushing too hard on an open door. The rabbi admits in his opening statement that he doesn't believe in an afterlife. Although he does admit it in a slightly unclear way. Perhaps to play both sides of the argument hoping not everyone will notice. Although it could also be related to the way he has learned to speak about the topic while not contradicting his Jewish faith. A Jewish faith, which as far as I know, doesn't actually have any dogma as relates to an afterlife. It may in fact be Jewish dogma that there is no afterlife.

I wish people would put more effort into the live they're living now rather than worrying about what life could be when they die. This is the only life that we KNOW exists. Fearing death is natural but it's no reason to make up impossible situations just because we have no explanations. Forget the afterlife, admit we don't know what happens and start concentrating on what we do have.

I think the basis for the belief lies less in arrogance than it does in fear. We don't want to have to face up to the idea of a world that not only continues beyond our lifetime, but is more or less ambivalent about our passing. Hell, I'd be thrilled by the prospect of existence beyond death, and I'd wager most people would as well. Doesn't mean there is one, but it is a convenient, comforting belief with an intrinsic appeal to a species aware of their own mortality.

I think it’s debatable whether or not traditional Judaism even affirms the existence of an afterlife as the Rabbi asserts, certainly it doesn’t affirm it “enthusiastically.” The Pentateuch only ever mentions dying people as going to “Sheol” which is usually translated as “grave” but could possibly refer to a Hebrew conception of the afterlife that was probably similar to what other Fertile Crescent societies at the time believed in, which means it didn’t have different places for good or evil people but just one spiritual realm to which all the dead are consigned. Of course there are plenty of other rabbis and scholars who agree with Shmuley too and have some passages and long-held rabbinical traditions and sayings that they cite which insinuate the existence of something analogous to heaven and hell.

The one positive about hitchens not being here anymore is I think the woke society of today would drive him insane. I would though like to have listened to his opinion on Israel hamas because he wouldn’t pick a side. He tear shreds off both sides in a debate. That’s why he’s impressive.
