Chile - History, Geography, Economy and Culture

🇨🇱 A land of extreme dimensions and a tremendous variety of climate zones and biomes, from the driest desert in the world to lush temperate rainforests, scrub and tundra. It's narrowest of all countries in form, a product of being sandwiched between the largest ocean and longest mountain range in the world. Once a property of colonial Spain, it then saw an influx of people from all over Europe that went on to shape the most prosperous of all Latin American nations. Perhaps the most geographically fascinating of all countries, this land could only be Chile!

🇨🇱 In this Chile documentary we first look at the history of Chile, from the early days of the Spanish Conquest and Colonial period of Chile, to Chile's war of Independence. Following Chilean Independence, we then examine Chile in the 1800s including the expansion into the southlands of the Mapuche and then the War of the Pacific against Peru and Bolivia. The 20th Century saw general stability and prosperity until the 1960s and 70s when the socialist Salvador Allende was elected president, but crashed the economy leading to intervention from the USA in the form of a coup in 1973 by General Augusto Pinochet. While Pinochet restored and then boomed the economy, his junta committed thousands of human rights violations against his own people.
🇨🇱 From 1990 Chile has had democratically elected governments, and its economy is the strongest in Latin America, with its mines producing the largest amount of copper in the world, and its state mandated private pension scheme being the first of its kind and most successful globally. It successfully exports a variety of foodstuffs, including Chilean fine wines, Chilean fruit and Chilean Sea Bass.
🇨🇱 Chile's geography is defined by its extreme length compared to its width, the product of being sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and Andes mountains. Lying on a long tectonic plate boundary, Chile experiences the most violent earthquakes in the world. Traversing 40 degrees of latitude, it is home to a diverse set of climate zones and biomes, from the driest of all deserts in the north, the Atacama, through Mediterranean scrub, the Oceanic Valdivian temperate rainforests, and tundra in the south in Tierra del Fuego, Torres del Paine National Park and Cape Horn, the southernmost part of the continent.
🇨🇱 The capital and largest city is Santiago de Chile, with the historic port of Valparaiso being the second largest, and Concepcion the third.

    I keep checking on Chile, because the only person from Chile i ever met was truly friendly and kind. Not the fake kindness so commonly encountered among united statians that wanes after the first meeting but real simple kindness that stayed the same for years and it had no hidden agenda. I count the people who impressed me in my life on just one hand. A Chilean is one of them. There is zero united statian in that list.

    I had my Chilean friends as house guests for four months while they finished up their advanced degrees and became more interested in this country. Plus, Chile has a lot of physical similarity to my home state, California: a similar geometry, a Mediterranean climate in much of the country, and a coastal mountain range and a much higher mountain range separated by a long, fertile valley, etc. They also share a native American and Spanish colonial past and a history of mining and European immigration. I would love to see this beautiful, interesting country someday and as much of the rest of South America as I can manage. (I can’t endure the tropical heat and humidity of the northern regions for very long). Chile certainly is a land of extremes and biodiversity, like California is, with everything one could want in one place.

    I cant even imagine what a 9.6 earthquake would be like. That is the strongest earthquake that humans have ever witnessed in recorded history. The Richter Scale is logarithmic so every number increase is a factor of 10. I must have been awful to live through and probably lasted up to 5 minutes ( looked it up it lasted TEN minutes!)

  • @Geodiode

    @Geodiode

    Жыл бұрын

    Yep, exactly. It's logarithmic. I believe that the shaking in the really big ones (like the Indian Ocean Tsunami event of 2004), is not really greater than that of a 7.0, but they are much much longer, going on for 5+ minutes compared to less than 30 seconds. It measures the total energy released. Still, not one I'd want to live through...

    As a chilean, i must say it is very safe to experience an earthquake here in Chile. Buildings are built to withstand them. I was 14 when the 8.8 earthquake in 2010 happened and since then I could say we're used to it. I think last week or a few days back, i don't remember when, there was a 6 point something tremor (chileans call any earthquake below 7 a tremor, to us a "real earthquake" has to be 7 or more, I don't know why, it's a cultural thing 😅) and nothing happened, the earth just moves, some things might fall but that's it, a tsunami could happen in coastal areas though, but it would have to be a really big earthquake for that to happen. It's really safe here, so I don't get scared. But here, if it were to happen in other countries i would actually be scared because I wouldn't know the architecture. 😂 Greetings, and if someday you decide to visit Chile, be prepared for minor earthquakes but be sure that nothing will happen to you. ❤ trust chileans, we know what to do.

    Chile is amazing. I've been to Santiago and Valle Nevado back in 2006 or something like that and to Santiago de Atacama right before the pandemic hit. I want to visit Padagonia, eighter Chilenean or Argentinean before I die. And easter Island would be awesome too. Cheers from Brazil

    Many thanks for your excellent overview of this beautiful country, easily my favorite among all Latin American countries. I've had the good fortune to travel to Chile on several occasions. These visits have taken me from the far north of Arica and Iquique and the Atacama Desert to Punto Arenas on the Strait of Magellan. Chile is a stunningly beautiful country with very hospitable people and charming customs.

    Chile holds a special place in my heart, as I spent a year there as a student. I remember visiting the south, finding myself in a lush forest with volcanic soil, very singular plants, with the misty "Cordillera" in the background... It felt like a travel back to the Jurassic era. Santiago was bustling and energetic, Valparaíso was fancy and colorful. My only regret is that I was unable to travel to the North... Gives me an excuse to come back ☺️

    the planet Earth is so unique that everything is unique there as much the countries as the peoples, the cities and their inhabitants, the 7 billion eight hundred million and some earthlings are all unique. no superlative is valid since everything is unique. just as the tendency of the human species to kill each other and destroy everything around it is unique in the sense that other animal species do not do that. Chile is a beautiful country and so are other countries.
