Scotland - Geography, Culture and Economy

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿A country on the north-western edge of Europe. A mix of islands, highlands and lowlands. A country of romance and unique traditions, very different from their imperial neighbour to the south. A nation of three different languages, its culture has survived and flourished across the millennia, delivering some of the greatest and most innovative minds found anywhere. This is the land of whiskey and haggis, Nessie and oil, golf, tartan and bagpipes. This land could only be Scotland.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿In this second part of a 2-part special Scotland documentary we look first at the physical geography of Scotland; its situation within Europe and the British Isles, the broad division of islands, highlands and lowlands, the climate of Scotland and the types of natural vegetation found here.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿The human geography of Scotland is a mix of English and Celtic (Gaelic) influences, with English, Scots and Scottish Gaelic languages being spoken today. The largest city is Glasgow, followed by the capital Edinburgh and then Aberdeen.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Scotland lies as an autonomous country within the United Kingdom, having its own parliament in Edinburgh and able to enact its own laws in certain areas not reserved by the UK government. The Flag of Scotland is the cross of St Andrew, a white saltire on a blue field, while the coat of arms of Scotland is a red lion rampant on a golden shield.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿The Scottish economy is an advanced mixed economy typical of highly developed nations. Oil and whiskey (whisky) are its chief exports.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Scottish culture is very rich, being a blend of English and Gaelic (Celtic) cultures. It has 3 notable UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Skara Brae, The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh, and the Forth Bridge. Bagpipes and tartan play a central role in ceremonial music and dress within Scotland, while the haggis and deep fried "anything" feature on the Scottish menu. The Loch Ness monster ("Nessie") has been a legend for centuries but documentary proof of its existence has eluded all.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Scotland is the origin for an astonishing number of innovations, such as the steam engine, antibiotics, refrigeration and colour photography. Famous and notable Scots include Adam Smith, Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Anthony Conan Doyle, Sean Connery, Billy Connolly and James Clerk Maxwell.

1 Like the prophets of the Bible, in April 1993, I, Kacou Philippe, a man who had never been in a church, I receive in a vision, the visitation of an Angel who commissions me for a Message destined to the whole earth in fulfillment of Matthew 25:6 and Revelation 12:14. This is the account of my conversion, as well as the three great visions of the call and commission as I received them: 2 I came to conversion on April 24, 1993 according to Daniel 10:4 to 11 by a vision in which I saw myself standing on the sand of the sea and then on top of a high pyramid and then again on the sand of the sea in another place and I saw an old military truck coming out of the depths of the sea and leave behind me. I turned and I saw that it contained living people. They were women and one of them was mixed-race. 3 Then two doves came toward me and went back over the waters. And there was an eclipse, then a man having the appearance of a Cloud and holding a sword came down from Heaven with a Lamb and the earth was illuminated again. They stood on the waters and the Lamb began to speak to me in an unknown tongue. The sound of his voice came into me and I fell dead. My soul went to stand on the waters with them while my body was lying on the sand of the sea. When He had finished speaking to me, my soul came into me and I became alive again but I no longer saw Them. 4 Then a crowd of people came toward me from the right side and I asked them if they had seen the Angel and the Lamb. They said, "No!" And I said: “But, how did you not see the Angel and the Lamb and all the things They have done?” They replied, "We have not seen the Angel and the Lamb and we have not heard the Words the Lamb pronounced, but we entirely believe It because what God gave and that the devil took, has now been restituted to you ". I looked up and I saw a ladder set up between the sky and the earth, above the waters and angels ascended and descended. And the vision ended and I felt what I know today to be the Holy Spirit and I wept and I believed in God on the spot. [Kc.64v3] [Kc.130v9] 5 The following day at around 3 p.m. while I was sitting with my family, I was transported again in vision into a totally desert country and I saw eastward Words that were coming down from Heaven carried on Clouds. It was after these two visions that I got up and went to church for the very first time. [Kc.137v37] 6 In a third vision, we were sitting in an examination room for the Advanced level test and the examiner was distributing the test-papers. I said to myself, "But what am I doing here? I do not have a good school level and what am I going to write?” And later, It was said to me: "The same way that Mary conceived miraculously, without knowing any man, the same way that Moses received in details what happened at the creation, you too, you have received the Words of eternal Life on this April 24, 1993 and it is decreed by God. At the appointed time, you will understand and you will teach what you did not learn in order that whoever believes has eternal Life". [Kc.9v34] [Kc.30v1-3] 7 NOW WHAT DOES THIS MESSAGE OF THE LAMB SAY? This Message says that we are no longer in the evening time but at midnight. However, it is the same age and the same Spirit of Elijah, but a "New" Message which is a high scope of the one of the evening time. Zechariah 14:7 is therefore different from Matthew 25:6.

American, here. The Mrs. and I took her mother to Scotland for 2 weeks. Let me say that Scotland is glorious and achingly beautiful. The food was amazing, including lamb, taters and neeps, not to mention the salmon. I even had 3 helpings of haggis. Almost every day it was ~70F and sunny, and we were told we were very lucky. I'd have to say that the weather and vibe in Scotland (to me) is comparible to the Pacifiic Northwestern USA. Everyone we met was delightful. The land is steeped in history, and it really blew my mind. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Born an Aussie of English parents. As boy, I grew up in the company of many Scots who made great impressions upon this wee lad. Throughout my life, I could often be quoted as saying that if I were not an Aussie, my one desire would be to be a Scot. The pipes cause my blood to rise and my skin to goosebump. If I thought I had the right to wear a tartan, I'd have a kilt in my wardrobe. Alas, I've looked extensively and cannot find an ancestor (even a distant one) from whom I might inherit that right. Lang mae ye lum reek.

I live elsewhere in the UK, but what a fantastic film/video about Scotland and the Scots. The only thing I’d add is that, in my humble experience, they are the most welcoming of people. I think the openness and willingness to share with others may come from a long memory of hardship. They are hard working and often very wealthy and yet it is frowned upon to brag about wealth up north. Scots are are a very unusual and different people who are well aware of their history, their capabilities and above all, what freedom, fairness and equality actually means. They taught us southerner’s a thing it two (nearly everything really) and I think this video illustrates that narrative very well and the collection of influential Scots at the end is very moving because we all know who they are, what they are like and why they couldn’t be anything else other than Scottish. 👏

I agree wholeheartedly with your statement. All though they are just books and a TV series which some will take lightly, the history the author has researched and included in the books is excellent. And the TV series has brought that history to the screen. I do understand how hard it is to watch the "Wentworth Prison" episodes. I have watched the episodes now more than once and it still is very hard to watch. But if anyone will brace themselves and watch you will see acting than can compare to no other. I cannot imagine where an actor has to go to in their minds to protray such a horrific situation. Sam Hueghan as the victim was outstanding. If you can bring yourself to watch, pay attention to the his facial expressions. He established himself as a great actor. I did read where he said it was hard and stressful to do the scenes. History shows life in the eighteeth century was hard and for a highlander death was an every day occurance.

Fantastic video. So comprehensive, well done and really respectful of our country and culture. Only one inconsequential detail which is now incorrect - the forth bridge no longer has to be painted continuously as new long life paint has been developed and in use since 2012, meaning they finished painting it after 122 years. Phrase is still in use anyway.

Me mum came fae jis ootside Aberdeen wie her kin tae Canada in '69. I've never been yet, but I feel so drawn to Scotland. Maybe being born in New Scotland (Nova Scotia) and my blood being what it is does it. Been living in Canada far north for almost ten years now, working outdoors. Either foolhardy, or good genes! I dearly miss seeing my older relatives from Scotland come visit us. And I miss my grandfather. The banter at the table. Crazy tales "fae back hame." Was married in a kilt. Planning to graduate college (better late than never!) in a kilt. Every vehicle I have owned has St. Andrew's Cross on the front bumper. I learned to make my own haggis, and used to make my own spice mix for oatmeal. The wife and I are really hoping for a visit and tour once school is done. Loved this two-part series. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Cheers!

Great Video. I had the pleasure to visit at least a small part of Scotland with my two sons in 2015 to play golf courses around St. Andrews, including the Old Course. The golf courses were quite an experience for we three, being Americans who are used to playing on manicured courses. I rather enjoyed the Haggis and Black Pudding each morning for breakfast at our small hotel in St. Andrews. Those 2 dishes are quite similar to my experience as a southern Indiana farm boy, with Swiss and German heritage. We called the Haggis by the name of Headcheese, and the Black Pudding was Blood Sausage. Of course we tipped a few grams of the local Whisky each evening as well. The history and the present day Scotland are magnificent to behold. Cheers! jca

Nice video, there's couple bits I think worth highlighting. The mention of tartan sounded like the use of kilts and tartan weather naturally established into family patterns, but the family named tartan was a fashion creation in London, which the clan cheifs liked the sound of and adopted. Original, as with most things traditional now, tartan was just any pattern as kilts (full kilts more then the short kilt) were workwear and functional rather then a statement of family/nation As the union with England is covered a in a few parts; the economy section would have been good to include how it was the driving factor for Scotland in creating a union after it lost a 5th of its national wealth in the failed Panama colony attempt as I think that's on overlooked but key part of Scotland's history with the UK.

  • @Geodiode

    @Geodiode

Thank you, that is useful info about Tartan and clan ownership. Regarding Darien, this is discussed in Part 1, although many Scots take issue with my treatment of that affair and the Union with England (which was very complex and difficult to condense in a short video about the country's history as a whole).

Nice and concise, the pictures fill me with the desire to visit Scotland. My family was from Ireland but I heard many stories of how sometimes the men went over to Scotland to work and we did have relatives from there. Thank you for the information. Especially appreciated how you explained the connection to England. Never knew or understood how they were connected. Again, a clear and easy to comprehend history. Thank you.

Now I have an urge to move to Scotland, it looks soo calm and full of natural beauty and intersting human activity both ancient and modern. I also like rain and despise the freezing cold winter and hot summer in the continental climate where I have uncomfortably spent life so far.😂 This really made Scotland seem like a very nice place to be!

Great Video. I do love my country and proud to be Scottish, so many beautiful places up north, white sand beaches. It has so much for such a small country and so many Scottish inventors did miss out a few important people like Alexander Fleming who created penicillin and saved countless lives in world war one and Dolly the sheep, the first cloned animal.

This is fantastic! Thank you so much for presenting Scotland like this. Born and raised in Seattle, I nevertheless feel an extremely strong connection to my Scottish roots. In fact, although I don't if it's true or not, my parents touted me as being a direct descendant of Rob Roy MacGregor on both sides of the family. (I can exonerate us, by way of the Mitchel Library in Glasgow, and will, as soon as I can find my feet as a professional book writer.) Also a descendant of Clan Farquharson on both sides of my family. Can't get enough of Scottish Highland Games and Clan Gatherings, love bagpipes of all kinds, and the one time I had haggis, I thought it was delicious... in which case, perhaps it wasn't authentic? I've been to Scotland twice now, and can hardly wait to get to go again.
