The Eight Ages of Greece - A Complete History

The oldest civilisation in Europe. Birthplace of Western Philosophy. The first European alphabet. A place where human sculpture was perfected. A place where democracy was first realised. Where those famous athletic games began. So many accolades for so small a land. Where to begin in telling the story of this oh-so important of nations? At the beginning, of course, and don't stop until the end! In this video I dare to tell the FULL history of this land and its people. It is an incredible story. It is the story of GREECE.

In this full length history documentary of Greece I'll cover the full range of time, from the Bronze Age civilisations of Minoan Knossos and Mycenae, through the dark age that followed and into the Archaic Age that saw the Doric people rebirth an even more spectacular culture of a rich Greek mythology of heroes and gods, ornate pottery, the Oracle of Delphi, and an alphabet that is still in use today and was the father of Latin and Cyrillic alphabets used across the world.
The cultural apex came during the Classical Age of the 6th and 5th Centuries BC, where Athens first experimented with democracy, and the Spartan phalanx held off the Persians at Thermopylae, where Socrates, Plato and Aristotle brought new thinking to the world, creating Western Philosophy, where architecture of temples and theatres reached sublime levels such as those of the Parthenon, and where sculpture of the human form was perfected.
The squabbling polis or city states were eventually united under Phillip of Macedon, but it was his son, Alexander the Great who would go on to export the rich Greek culture to the rest of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East beyond when he conquered the much greater Persian Empire in 336 BC. After Alexander, his conquests were split among his generals, with the greatest being Ptolemy and Egypt, which only ended three centuries later with Cleopatra.
The Greek phalanx, however, ended up being no match for the Roman legions, and the Greek world was absorbed into the Roman world over several centuries, ending in Actium in 31BC. But "Greece conquered her rude conqueror" and the Romans adopted many of the customs and philosophy of their captors.
As the Pax Romana ended in the 3rd and 4th Centuries AD, with the sack of Rome, only the Eastern Roman Empire, centred around Constantinople would survive, going on for another millennium as the Byzantine Empire. But betrayed by their fellow Christians in the Fourth Crusade in the Sack of Constantinople, the empire was so weakened that it was finally picked off by the Ottoman Turks two centuries later in the Ottoman conquest of 1453.
The next four centuries were the darkest hour for Greece under Ottoman rule, but salvation would come with the help of the Western Powers with Greek independence in 1832. The modern Greek state expanded over the next 80 years to its current size today, albeit with the disastrous setback of the Greek-Turkish War of 1919-22. A brutal occupation by the Axis Powers in World War II ended only to be followed immediately by a civil war that left political scars between the left and right for decades afterwards, the low point being under the Regime of the Colonels from 1967-1974. Greece joined the EEC (EU) in 1982 and enjoyed benefits of membership but suffered badly in the 2008 financial crisis and the austerity measures that followed. Despite this, however, Greeks today still enjoy their best quality of life in centuries.

I've always found the history of Eastern Europe to be both fascinating and underappreciated. From Stefen Nemanja in Serbia to Emperor Alexios I Komnenos in Byzantium, it's an adventure learning. I'm from a Chinese civilisation so learning about other cultures as old or older than mine is exciting. Most fascinating is how Greece have survived as individual city states and never lost their culture despite being dominated by both the Latin Romans and Ottoman Turks. That is strength and pride! Lol I seen one of those racist moor videos on here that said that Plato was in fact black lol. People like that get mad that their own culture throughout history isn’t as rich as white peoples lol. But we can’t help that lol that’s just the way things are. I mean man…. They are some crazy conspiracy theorists, saying that white people have hid the “truth about black civilizations throughout history”. And I couldn’t help but make a comment Saying…. You must’ve been really sad during your history lessons growing up, it really hit you right in your soul to learn that all of the most successful civilizations throughout history are of white cultures. And now you have to say “that’s ours and we did that”. Saying stuff like Black people were in America first, Black people built the pyramids, black people taught white people how to bathe. And how to be civilized…. It’s really hard to bite your tongue when someone is attacking your culture lol. But I couldn’t help myself and saying that it’s the year 2023 and most of Africa is still throwing spears at wild animals….. I rest my case. But no it’s all a big conspiracy…. They shove this MOOR talk down everyone’s throats. What’s your opinion on the MOOR’s and what comes to mind when those same people make wild, unfounded, ridiculous, claims like that about cultures of years past? Like you can’t change history just to make yourself more proud of your race… 🤷🏼‍♂️ 🧐

THE GOSPEL OF THE WORD OF ALMIGHTY GOD "is a great last day that He will save man" (God Came to Work on Earth to save Corrupt mankind. The present is not the same as the past. The salvation granted today occurs during the last day, when everyone is separated according to type) Almighty God said Now God is judging you, chastising you, and punishing you, but you need to know that the point of punishing you is for you to know yourself. He is PUNISHING, JUDGING, and PUNISHING so that you KNOW YOURSELF, to CHANGE YOUR DISPOSITION, and in addition, so that you KNOW YOUR VALUE, and SEE THAT ALL OF GOD'S ACTIONS ARE RIGHTEOUS and IN ACCORDANCE WITH HIS DISPOSITION and It is necessary in His WORK, that He WORKS ACCORDING TO HIS PLAN for MAN'S SALVATION, and that He is the RIGHTEOUS GOD who LOVES, SAVES, JUDGES, and PUNISHES MAN. 🙏 If you only KNOW that YOUR STATUS IS LOW, that YOU ARE CORRUPT and DISOBEDIENT, BUT YOU DON'T KNOW THAT GOD WANTS TO MAKE HIS SALVATION CLEAR THROUGH the JUDGMENT and PUNISHMENT HE DOES TO YOU NOW, YOU HAVE NO WAY TO GET EXPERIENCE, especially you have NO ABILITY to CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD. GOD DID NOT COME TO KILL or DESTROY, BUT TO JUDGE, CURSE, CHASSIS, and SAVE. ☀️ UNTIL His 6,000 year GOVERNMENT PLAN is COMPLETED---BEFORE He REVEALS the OUTCOME of EVERY CATEGORY of HUMANS---GOD'S WORK on EARTH is FOR SALVATION, IT'S PURPOSE is ONLY to MAKE it PERFECT---COMPLETELY ---those who LOVE Him and SUBJECT to His RULE. HOWEVER GOD SAVES PEOPLE, IT DOES ALL BY IDENTIFYING them in their OLD SATANIC NATURE; that is, He SAVES them THROUGH ENCOURAGING them to DESIRE LIFE. If they DON'T DO that, THERE is NO WAY they can RECEIVE GOD'S SALVATION. SALVATION is the WORK of GOD HIMSELF, and DESIRE for LIFE is SOMETHING that MAN MUST DO to RECEIVE SALVATION. ☀️ In HUMAN EYES, SALVATION is GOD'S LOVE, and GOD'S LOVE CANNOT BE PUNISHMENTS, JUDGMENTS, and CURSES; SALVATION MUST be accompanied by love, compassion, and in addition, words of comfort, as well as the eternal blessings bestowed by God. People believe that when God saves people, He does so by touching them with His blessings and grace, so that they give their hearts to God. That is, His touching people is His saving them. This type of rescue is done through reconciliation. When God grants them a hundred times, only then will people submit to God's name and strive to do good for Him and bring Him glory. THIS IS NOT GOD'S PURPOSE for MANKIND. GOD CAME TO WORK ON EARTH to SAVE CORRUPTED HUMANITY; there is no lie here. If there was, He certainly did not come to do His work personally. In the past, His way of salvation included a display of ultimate love, so He gave everything to Satan, the brother of all mankind. The PRESENT is NOT the SAME AS the PAST: THE SALVATION GIVEN to YOU NOW HAPPENS DURING the LAST DAYS, WHEN EVERY ONE is SEPARATE BY KIND; the WAY of your SALVATION is NOT LOVE or COMPASSION, BUT PUNISHMENT and JUDGMENT, so that MAN CAN be more COMPLETELY SAVED. 🙏 THEREFORE, ALL YOU RECEIVE is PUNISHMENT, JUDGMENT, and RUINLESS STRIKES, BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS: IN THIS RUINLESS STRIKES THERE is NO LITTLE PUNISHMENT. ☀️ NO MATTER HOW HARM My WORDS ARE, WHAT COMES to YOU ARE JUST A FEW WORDS THAT MAY SEEM COMPLETELY HEARTLESS to YOU, and HOW MUCH My ANGER is, WHAT COMES TO YOU ARE STILL WORDS of TEACHING, and I DON'T INTEND to HURT you or KILL you. ☀️ Isn't this all true? YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT AT THIS TIME, WHETHER IT IS RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT OR HEARTLESS REFINING and PUNISHMENT, EVERYTHING os FOR THE SAKE of SALVATION. ☀️ WHETHER it is NOW SEPARATE EACH ONE BY TYPE or EXPOSING CATEGORIES of PEOPLE, the PURPOSE of ALL GOD'S WORDS and WORKS is TO SAVE THOSE WHO TRULY LOVE GOD. RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT is MADE to PURIFY PEOPLE, and HARD REFINEMENT is MADE to PURIFY them; HURTING WORDS or PUNISHMENT are both MADE to PURIFY and for SALVATION.☀️🙏 THEREFORE, the METHOD of SALVATION TODAY is NOT the SAME DAY. NOW YOU ARE SAVED BY RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT, and THIS IS A GOOD TOOL to SEPARATE EACH ONE of YOU ACCORDING to KIND. ☀️ Besides, CRUEL PUNISHMENT SERVES your ULTIMATE SALVATION---and what can you say in the face of such chastisement and judgment? Have you not always enjoyed salvation, from beginning to end? You have seen God incarnate and realized His infinite power and wisdom; and besides, you have experienced repeated beatings and discipline. However, have you not also received the greatest grace? Are not your prayers greater than others? YOUR GRACES are even more ABUNDANT than the GLORY and RICHES that SOLOMON ENJOYED! Think about this: If My purpose in coming was to judge and punish you instead of saving you, would your life have lasted? ☀️ Are you still alive, sinful creatures of flesh and blood? If my goal was only to punish you, why did I incarnate and start such a big project? CAN'T YOU LOW MORTAL BE PUNISHED FOR JUST SPEAKING ONE WORD? Will I still have to exterminate you after I have deliberately condemned you? Do you still not believe these words of mine? Can I save man only through love and compassion? ☀️ Or can I just use the crucifixion to save people? Isn't My righteous disposition more pleasant to make man completely obedient? Is it not more capable of completely saving man? 🙏 From " You Must Set Aside the Blessings of Status and Understand God's Will to Bring Man's Salvation" Fulfillment of "When I looked up, someone handed me a book wrapped in a scroll. I opened it and I read on both sides the prayers, lamentations, and curses." (Ezekiel 2:9-10). ... "His garment was stained with blood. He was called the "Word of God" (Rev. 19:13). The kingdom He brought down and set up in the highest in the sky so that it can occupy His creation in the universe and engrave on it the entirety of His Holy name "THE CHURCH OF ALMIGHTY GOD" 💐 fulfillment of (Mat. 16:18) "And I say as for you, you are Peter, on top of this rock I will build my Church, that even the power of death will not be able to overcome it.". ... and "The Letter to the Church in Philadelphia" (Rev. 3:7-13). ... And fulfillment of "The New Jerusalem" 💫 (Rev. 21:10) "The Spirit enveloped me, and the angel led me to the top of a very high mountain. He showed Me Jerusalem, the Holy City, which coming down from heaven from God." (1 Peter 4:17) "For the time has come in the house of God for the beginning of judgment in the house of God." 📩 Calling and leading the sheep of God to His glorious Throne "THE CHURCH OF ALMIGHTY GOD"💐 to submit again to His authority so that He will continue to teach, guide and protect even in plague, famine and wild animals will not be moved by it and completely win this final battle with the big red dragon! "They say with a loud voice, "Salvation comes from the Lamb, and from our God who sits on the Throne!" (Rev. 7:10). ... "But you are a chosen race, a company of royal priests, a a nation dedicated to God, a people belonging to God to declare the wonderful things he has done. He is the one who calls you out of darkness into wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9). ... and fulfillment that it will be built above the sky/KZread in (Isaiah 2:2) "In the Last Day, the mountain on which Jehovah's temple stands will stand out above all the mountains. All nations will flock there. " ☀️ 💌

Greece has experienced numerous cycles of growth and decline throughout its five-millennia existence. Brilliant documentary about a people who has refused to be dominated throughout the centuries by almost every major empire the world has ever seen, or at least left its marks on it that still echoes to this very day. The Greek spirit is an unbreakable one, just like the phalanx once was. " ☀️ 💌

Even in Athens, as busy as it was, everyone was friendly and you never felt in danger (just keep your backpack on your chest - LOL iykyk). We traveled down the Peloponnese peninsula, seeing Mystras and Monemvasia. We drove through so many beautiful mountains and fruit groves between destinations. The history in every place we went to was astounding. We also went up to Meteora, and some of the Sporades. Crete was one of my favourites. So interesting to see the clash of Byzantine and Ottoman influence on the island, while they still hold a cultural identity and pride in their ancient Greek past. Excellent video!!

Perhaps some of us are unaware that so-called white people have no history and are incapable of inventing culture. If white people have a history then where is it? I am an historian of world class pedigree and I assure you that socalled white people have only been on the planet for six to ten thousand years according to science and are NOT human precluding them from any discussion of human origins or civilization. This is not a dig. I'm just not on the side of white supremacist scholarship. There was and never will be a time in history when white people will be civilized. They are incapable of it. Their so-called history is based in savagery, genocide, and stealing from Israelites. I e.Black people. White people cannot live without having a parasitic relationship with Black people. 👊🏿🕎🏹⚔️🌽

As a Greek American, I absolutely loved the reverence shown for Greece's history and culture. You have a tremendous ability to boil down ~2,500 years of history into just one hour. One critical thing that I think was missed was the Greek Pontian and Armenian genocide that occurred 1919-1922. The video made it seem like a somewhat peaceful transfer of population but in reality it was a horrific and explicit genocide by Ataturk. Otherwise, incredible recollection.

Now is official In 2007 the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) officially recognized the Greek Genocide, along with the Assyrian Genocide. Cyprus was the first country to recognize the Genocide after Greece, by a decision of the House of Representatives on May 19, 1994, and since then it has been commemorating the victims. In addition to these, the Genocide has been recognized by Sweden on March 11, 2021, Armenia in March 2015, along with the Assyrian genocide, and the Netherlands, along with the Armenian and Assyrian genocide, on April 9, 2015. In addition, there are states in America that recognize the Genocide. These are the following: New York, May 19, 2002 New Jersey, September 2, 2002 Columbia, December 8, 2002 South Carolina, January 10, 2003 Georgia, February 3, 2003 Pennsylvania, December 12, 2003 Florida, April 20, 2005 Cleveland, May 11, 2005 Rhode Island, 2008 Indiana, December 2014 South Dakota, February 26, 2015 West Virginia, April 24, 2016 But also the following Australian states: South Australia, 30 April 2009 New South Wales. On May 1, 2013, the Senate, and on May 12, the Parliament recognized the Genocide of the Eastern Greeks, Armenians and Assyrians. From Canada, the Genocide is recognized by Toronto with a resolution on May 4, 2016, as well as the cities of Montreal, Ottawa, LaSalle, Oshawa, and the departments of Laval and Villeray St. Michel Park Extension, as well as the Municipal Councils of the cities of Vancouver and Regina. " ☀️ 💌

Thank you. This video really goes to the heart of it. That Greek history didn’t stop at the fall of Greek cities to Rome. It continued through the ages, particularly as the Eastern Roman Empire which was Greek speaking and Greek Orthodox. We have to “thank” Gibbons for developing the English academic loathing of later and eastern Roman history - “Byzantine” - which only now is being challenged. Another point is the idea of “Roman” rather than Greek history in Anatolia. Modern Turkish propaganda states that nearly every excavation they uncover in Anatolia is “Roman”. They constantly deny that the cities of Anatolia were Greek, spoke Greek before Roman conquest and continued to be Greek through classical Roman and later eastern Roman periods. These areas remained Greek through the ottoman era and only when 1.5 million Greeks were driven out of Anatolia in 1922/23 (many thousands murdered) was this connection severed. The point I make is that Greek history - all of its stages - has to be defended against those who would deny it and the ignorant tourists who wouldn’t know any better and go along with the idea that, for example, Ephesus was a Roman city or Antioch was a Roman city. I’m sick of finding the internet full of “useful idiots”.

Thanks very much for that detailed commentary, Jim. Many years ago, I read Gibbon Books 1-3 (to the end of the Western Empire), and tried to get through Book 4 in the hope of completing all 6 but he lost me after Justinian... the connection with the West, and what we Westerners *can* connect with was more or less broken at that time, only to be reconnected properly after 1830.

Thank Mr. Gibbons and on my behalf for writing a history in which only British collaborationists participate. How was it concluded that Greek was spoken in the Eastern Roman Empire? If the Greeks were so important in that empire, why wasn't a single emperor Greek? If the Greeks are such a powerful nation, why didn't they choose their own king after the formation, instead they brought Otto Friedrich Ludwig, Prince of Bavaria. Even today, they wave the Bavarian flag and shout that it is Greece. And everyone forgets to mention the Greek genocide and the expulsion of Slavic and other tribes after the Greek-Turkish war.

Some people are not happy with this strong historical remembrance and conscience of the Greeks. They resent that. In a way, I can understand that. Because at times it can be intimidating. Sometimes I myself can‘t believe how old and strong this Greek culture still is. But when you drive up the Lycabettos hill and watch the Acropolis against the background of the Aegean Sea, when you walk through the beautiful landscape of Delphi and see the sacred temples, when you visit the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul and attend the service in the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul, then you will feel this unique sentiment of living history. It is all still there under the shining light of the mediterranean sun. This makes me feel so humble and proud at the same time because humans have done all this. It is the cultural heritage of our human race.

The story of the Revolutionary War of 1821 and the struggle for Greek Independence is considerably more nuanced than what was presented in this (understandably brief) synopsis. Aid from the Great Powers - Britain, France, and Russia - which eventually culminated with the Battle of Navarino and the subsequent recognition of the Hellenic State, was not initially forthcoming. In fact, just the opposite. It only came about after several years of the Greeks essentially going it alone against overwhelming odds. The European Powers were unanimous in their condemnation of the Greek Revolution. For the first six years of a bitterly savage struggle the only external support for the Greek cause came in the form of a handful of idealistic young foreigners - the Philhellenes - who voluntarily (and with the express disapproval of their governments) joined the Greek rebels in their fight for freedom. The greatest of these was, of course, Lord Byron, who with his super-star status in the European Romantic movement brought considerable celebrity to the Greek cause. ADDENDUM (edit): Notwithstanding this comment, I would be truly remiss for failing to commend you on your thorough research of a complex subject, and on your splendidly diachronic panorama of Greek history: kudos -very well done indeed!

Well said, and as you point out. This very-well-documented piece of history was terribly complex and nuanced. I had about 30-60 seconds to squeeze this decade or so of 5,000 years into 1 hour. No wonder people shy away from trying to do what I did, and put all of Greek history into a single hour...

Incredible video, thank you! I absolutely love that you show the Hagia Sophia so prominently, being originally built by the Greek (Byzantines) as a cathedral. Too many beautiful structures in the world are now tainted by the evil filth that is Islam and claimed as their own. Much like the Hagia Sophia. The story of Greece is one of many such tragic examples.
