Brazil: History, Geography, Economy & Culture

Taking up half the continent of South America, Brazil is host to vast array of landscapes and biomes - from the steamy Amazon Rainforests, to the savannah of the Planalto Central, and the lush Atlantic Forests. 🇧🇷
One of the largest countries in the world in terms of land area and population, it is a unique blend of cultures from Europe, Africa and the native land itself. The history of Brazil is one of colonial exploitation and slavery, that, despite the efforts of enlightened leaders such as Dom Pedro II under the Empire of Brazil, today sees corruption and social inequality hold back what would otherwise already be a major global power. 🇧🇷
Despite its colonial past Brazil worked hard to enter the modern age in the 20th Century under presidents such as Getulio Vargas, and a new capital at Brasilia began in 1960s after a massive modernistic building program under the architect Oscar Niemeyer. The economy continued to expand despite political repression under the dictatorship of the 1970s and 1980s, with companies such as Embraer joining an elite club of international aerospace companies developing large aircraft. Brazilian politics has never been quiet and the current president of Jair Bolsonaro continues to divide opinion both at home and abroad. 🇧🇷
A global giant in agriculture, it has become self-sufficient in terms of energy needs, and its manufacturing size is now only second to the USA in the Americas. Rio de Janeiro is one of the most iconic and famous of all world cities, while giant São Paulo beats even New York in size to be the largest city in the Americas. Indeed Brazil's population is truly massive, over 200 million call themselves Brazilian, and live in diverse cities across all of the States of Brazil, from Curitiba in the South, Belo Horizonte in the centre of Minas Gerais, to Salvador Bahia and Recife in the North-East, and lastly, unique Manaus in the heart of the Amazon. 🇧🇷
This is the country that brought Samba, Carnival and Bossa Nova to the world and we look at the development and history of this globally influential rhythms. It is the country with the greatest of all national football teams, with players such as Pele and Neymar household names. 🇧🇷

Aguardo a parte 2 😊😂❤

One thing which gives me so much pride after having seen things from the outside after living away from Brasil for so long is the fact that we are so multicultural and ethinically diverse . From Iapoque to Chui (northern most to southern most) Brasil is incredibly beautiful. I am so lucky to have been able to drive the vast majority of BR1 (101) from Natal to Pelotas. From Beaches to mountais, waterfalls that rival anything seen anywhere in the world. The food is varied according to where you are. The people are warm, friendly, welcoming, passionate, opinionated, loud, crass, and giving. The past has made us Brasilians and we are very proud bunch of people regardless of where we may live in the world, and even if we have a second citizenship-being Brasilian will bleed through even if we live in white and nothing but white Antartica.

Thank you for this video. Next July I hope to spend a month in Rio: for the music. I know that Sao Paulo has more, but it's too expensive for me. I will be 71, and from Kodiak Alaska. That's why I chose July: it will be cooler then. I have been in love (from afar) with Brasil since I was 12, and I'm very excited! This video was really excellent as an introduction. Of course there was much more you could have covered, but it would have taken FAR more time: so you did a terrific job considering the time constraint. Wish me luck!

São Paulo is also the most economically powerful city in Latin America, São Paulo is also known for being a mega-diverse city, there are people of various races and creeds. São Paulo is amazing.

As a Brazilian I would like to congratulate you for a very good summary about Brazil. Well researched, accurate, it is very good indeed! I would make just a minor observation, really minor: regarding culture, it is undeniable that Rio has been the cultural capital of the country. And in all fields of culture and cultural influence. But this started to slowly change since the capital moved to Brasília. With the consequent economic decline of Rio, São Paulo came to prominence, each time more so. It became the biggest city, its economy boomed and became the biggest in the country and later in South America. To make a long story short, nowadays São Paulo is the new cultural capital of Brazil: It has the best and most influential universities, the best museums and art exhibitions, much more important musical concerts and shows, much more theatres than Rio, more venues for cultural events, fairs and shows. More bookstores, more publishing houses, more art galleries, more art events, more famous orchestras and ballets. It has also more museums of all kinds, including the best art museum in South America, the MASP. And so on! Some old cariocas still think of Rio as the cultural capital, but all indicators point to São Paulo as the differences both demographic and economic between both are each year more pronounced! Culture follows suit, naturally!

It's an immersive program where we take a virtual tour around the world, spending 2-3 weeks in each of the dozen or so countries, exploring the language, demographics, geography, and culture. They even give you a passport and play money in the various currencies each nation uses. I'll list them here in order: USA Mexico Canada Brazil Norway France Germany Kenya Saudi Arabia India China Japan Russia Australia Antarctica (obviously not nearly as much anthropology going on in this unit but the last 2 weeks of every year are mostly lighter in material to give everyone a chance to review) And we learn about the various biomes as we go for the science portion, so it all ties together.

Regarding to the Amazon, it is important to mention that developed countries destroyed their natural resources centuries ago and considering the Amazon as a global resource is hypocritical and refers to colonialist views of the past. It is also worth mentioning that Brazil has energy generation sources based on hydroelectric plants, different from the thermoelectric plants of the developed countries.

This is a really good video, thank you for it. I just wanted to state a fact, after the abolition of slavery, the royal family was making plans to give the ex-slaves lands so that they could live and survive, knowing of this, the rich and powerful farmer owners (coffee barons) allied with the army and gave them loads of money, who them performed the coup de etat. The monarchy was extremely popular along the population, who did not want the transition into a republic, there was a dictature state that lasted nearly 35 years (i think) and public/popular simpaties for the monarchy was brutally surpressed.
