The Philippines: History, Geography, Economy & Culture

An archipelago of 7,600 islands, where South-East Asia meets the Pacific. The Philippine Islands are the large islands of Luzon and Mindanao, and the collection of smaller islands between, known as the Visayas, with Palawan far to the west. 🇵🇭

Being on the boundary of several tectonic plates, the Philippines is home to many active volcanoes, including the current Mount Mayon eruption and the Mount Taal eruption. The eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 was the second largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century. The Philippines is also in the path of almost every Pacific Typhoon, and Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013 Leyte resulted in thousands losing their lives and millions homeless. 🇵🇭
The climate of the Philippines is tropical, with a Tropical Rainforest climate in the east, a Tropical Monsoon climate in central areas and a Tropical Savannah climate in the far west, and sheltered parts of Luzon. 🇵🇭
Manila is the national capital, and home to almost one-third of the country's estimated 110 million population. Cebu City and Davao City are the two other large population centers. 🇵🇭
Filipinos (known locally as Pinoys) are a unique blend of Austronesian Island people with Spanish names that speak American English, as a result of the Philippines being ruled during colonial times by Spain and the USA. Because of their connections with the USA, many Filipinos or their sons and daughters have gone on to famous careers in entertainment, such as Lea Salonga, Lou Diamond Phillips, apl.de.ap, Arnel Pineda, Enrique Iglesias and Monique Lhuillier. Their most famous sports champion is undoubtedly Manny Pacquiao, the only boxer in history to win a championship in eight weight categories. 🇵🇭
Most Filipinos are Catholic, a result of centuries of missionary work during the Spanish colonial period. Despite colonialism, however, all Filipinos speak one or more of the 180 native languages and dialects, with Tagalog and Cebuano making up half of all speakers. The Filipino language (along with English) is the official language, and is a standardised form of Tagalog. 🇵🇭
More than 10% of Filipinos live and work abroad in an attempt to overcome the difficult economic situation for most in the country. Most merchant ships around the world have majority Filipino crews, while the women find work as domestic maids, nannies and nurses. Many Filipinas look abroad to marry and succeed as many Western men admire them for their famous beauty. 🇵🇭
The economy of the Philippines is about one-third agriculture, with rice being the main subsistence crop. Electronics and high tech have recently made in-roads and are now the largest exports. Government corruption, and poor infrastructure, however, hold back the country from fulfilling its potential, where neighbours like Malaysia and Taiwan have succeeded. This corruption reached its height during the rule of Ferdinand Marcos, and his wife Imelda Marcos, who had a collection of thousands of shoes from the embezzlement of the public purse, while millions lived in poverty. 🇵🇭

I can never remember the flag of Poland except until I tell myself to remember Poland as a country that has no place for others. Only two. Two is not a nice number. 🇵🇱 With white on top and red below, it has a difficult flag to remember. Inverted flag is of Indonesia which has zero similarity with Poland. What does Po -land mean anyway? Does Po have any meaning?

we're not from malay Indonesian descent. the education system has updated the origins of our people to include the more modern theory which is accurate. the Austronesian expansion from Taiwan South to the Philippines, and then out to Micronesia (who are very close to us), Indonesia and Malaysia, Polynesia, Melanesia and Madagascar. there are videos on the Austronesian expansion stage of Philippine history on KZread, and these videos are in our K-12 educational curriculum now.

@derbdep You are right! I found out about this a few months ago. There is a KZreadr called Masaman and he explains the history in-depth. This makes total sense and explains alot of my questions. Alot of the taiwanese tribes are very similar to the igorots and mountainous people's in Northern Philippines and Baguio.

Hi @geodiode. We do have at least a few :) the Laguna Copperplate inscription is the oldest full document from the archipelago dating from 900AD. it was written in Old Malay with heavy sanskrit words, Hindu-Buddhist references and the Hindu Calendar (dated exactly to April 21, 900CE but in the Saka year "according to astromony"- as losted from the document itself). It also includes old Tagalog words. it shows at that time, our ancestors were predominantly Hindus and Buddhists, a typical Southeast Asian feudal caste system, and from the names and titles of the nobles, very similar culture among the nobility to places like Java and Bali (although ordinary people probably always had the same Austronesian culture that ties it to the Pacific as well as the rest of island Southeast Asia). It also shows how important "utang" (debts) were for our ancestors as it is today, seeing as the document venorated a "honorable Namwaran" from his gold debt to a local ruler 😂 its a fascinating document, I highly recommend you give it a look. We also have a Vajrayana Buddhist Mahapratisara mantra found in Mindanao, dedicated to Avalokiteshwara. dating to the 12th century. Again its fascinating. We also have beautiful artefacts of golden statues of a Golden Tara and Golden Kinnari (Buddhist diwata) as well as "icons" of Avalokiteshwara (a bodhisattva or aspect of the Buddha), and Hindu devatas Ganesha, and Vishnu in Cebu, Palawan and Mindanao. We also find artefacts of native Austronesian Anito (the cognate for Polynesian Aitu), showing that the kingdoms, chiefdoms and thalassocrasies also maintained their austronesian sea going cultures. interestingly, the way most practice catholicism and islam has a substrate of buddhist and hindu elements. Such as beliefs in "diwata" (from sanskrit devata, meaning deities) which still exist to this day even among the majority christians, and belief in karma (gaba or kamla) is still pretty strong abross the archipelago. Common prayers and "orasyon" (mantras) are usually said in a form more simolar to how Thais and Balinese people would repeat their Sanskrit and Pali mantras. theyre repeated over and over again at highspeed and in a monotone voice. All Saints day here resembles Obon and the Ghost Festivals of Japan and other oarts of non-christianized Asian countries in the region, than anything in the West. Food, drinks, candles, and even incense are offered at the graves of the dead. This country has a peculiarly Asian take on Catholicism. Interestingly, the Spanish colonizers allowed some high class native clan names for the nobility (ginoo or kadatuan caste) to remain. So we have surnames today like Laxamana (from Laksmana, the Sanskrit title for a naval-general), Puno (meaning a root or leader), Gatdula and Gatchalian (from Gat Dula, and Gat sa Lian, Gat being a title for duke in our precolonial political states. Dula being an ancestral name, and sa Lian meaning "of Lian". These families, although normal citizens today, are the descendants of the local chieftancy or nobility which were Christianized by the Spanish). If you notice names with non-Spanish origin, they are either from the Bangsamoro (muslim filipinos), from the other grpups who werent colonized historically or were from the precolonial nobility castes that were once in charge of the many city states and polities that made up this archipelago before the 1500s :) Makes you wonder about Manny Pacquiao entering politics again as a Senator and presidential candidate in our last national election, maybe its something "in his (possibly blue) blood" 😂

I am wondering why comparee to our neighboring countries, our foreign tourist arrival is significantly lower. There are so many tourist spots in the Philippines that even most Filipinos have never explored. Just the fact that there are more than 7k islands, but many of us have never been into other islands particularly those living in the city like me, makes me a bit sad. There are so many places to visit within the country so travelling abroad would be last in my list. Let's explore our local tourist spots and help local economies grow 😊
