Cheapest Water Chiller for Small Hydro RDWC DWC

#rdwc #waterchiller #hydro
I couldn't take it any more. I needed something to stabilize my water temperature and originally I expected to pay $400 for a water chiller. but then I found this, tested it and it works perfectly. Despite it looking bootleg and the instructions being google translated hieroglyphics, everything worked out and its been over a month and no issues. My water is constantly cool and it fluctuates from 66-68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Man I hated adding the ice to the buckets and need something like this, for sure. Went back to soil because I didn’t have the time to stay on top of the water temperature like that. I did insulate all my buckets with the reflective bubble insulation, like people use for windshield sunscreen protectors in cars. It seemed to help regulate the temperature longer in the black buckets. My tents have been as high as 84 in summer. Thanks for sharing your experience with it.

It can be an issue. It’s temperature loss which makes the chiller work harder and has the possibility of pooling on gear you don’t want wet. It’s also adding humidity, as he mentioned. More work on your dehumidifier and a real worry with PM or budrot in a tent or small space. Reflectix or Double Bubble are fairly inexpensive insulation that is easy to work with, and helps solve this issue. It also works great for keeping light out of the res /bucket lids and insulating them as well. It’s a couple degrees cooler than ambient, without a chiller, so in some instances, that stuff can be the difference between root root and a healthy res.

@@HowWeedGrow Not speaking about bacteria. That's what I was getting at. Ambient temperatures are higher inside the tent than outside, to really get below the ambient temp of the tent with a non-compressor based "chiller", you'd want it outside the tent for optimal results. You're not going to get temps lower than the air temp you're pushing through the copper fins etc without some kind of coolant /refrigerant.

For about the 8th time i decided to try rdwc again without a chiller, and fot the 8th time it failed. It always happens about the 2nd week in flower, no matter how many frozen 2 liters i rotate in. Ive been building these rdwc setups for about 12 years now, and i used to have a 1/2 hp chiller, but things happened and i dont have a chiller now, but i still built a small 2 site setup that was just kickicking ass until it wasnt. But this sounds perfect for my small 2 plant set up and would hold me over til i build a bigger set up needing a bigger chiller. I will tell you this. With the right sized chiller, in the past, i usullt average 1 1/2 - 2 lbs per plant when vegged for 6 - 8 weeks.

  • @HowWeedGrow

Yeah my yield on 4 plants is crazy. Plants weren’t even that big but I’m pretty sure I got at least 2 lbs because all of it was buds. You could check my hydro grow on my channel. My plants were fine without the chiller and just frozen water bottles but it became a hassle. My MVP was using H2O2(hydrogen peroxide) in the water, that immediately changed everything and I stopped using all those beneficial microbes everyone swears by.

I find that sometimes you need to give it a jump start by kind of sucking water through the crappy pump. Sometimes you could do this by lifting it slightly higher then the Rez first. If not return it

I agree but as a Coco grower I'm moving to rdwc. My over head is fertilizer and medium ($350+ -) a grow 4 plants (autos) 5 gallon pots drain to waste. And I'm getting to the point I can't keep track on if I'm wasting nutes. So for my main grow in tent I'm moving to rdwc which I'm new to. But in the summer I can start some Coco grows and move them outside to increase yeilds

One harvest will pay for the proper chiller in the increased yield from using it… And you’re going to spend 1/2 to 3/4 of that cost making one yourself. My time is worth more than that, and I don’t have to deal with the unpleasing aesthetic of a mini fridge or window ac in an otherwise high tech system.

@@HowWeedGrow Buy a used water cooler off market place ( $15- $35 ), one that you would normally put a 5 gal jug in the top. Now tear it apart so that you are left with the compressor and the cooling coil. Some of the cooling coils are coated in a protective plastic and some are not. If the one you have doesn't have a protective coating on it just wrap a plastic bag around the coil so you don't get any oxidation in your nutrients. Place the coil directly into your nutrient reservoir. Buy a device that will monitor your water temp. I use the ITC-308 ($50). Plug the compressor into the cooling plug on the device and set your water temps. I set my water temp at 67 deg and set the turn on temp at +2 deg (69).
