Château de la Grifferaie S3, E11 "Drones, Rust, and Moths"

We picked up another drone, and I've included several great shots of the Chateau while we sit down for a little "front yard chat". I talk about a pretty significant issue that we've discovered on the front facade, and I talk about what the N.T. has to say about stuff. I (Rob) am really proud of this video, if you enjoy thinking about life I hope it will stimulate you to thought.

In addition to bracing in the basement I would get a Mason in and fill the cracks so that water doesn’t get in and behind the stone.

As a fellow north american and a builder for over 20 years,I think we are used to worrying about cracks in our country because the houses are so cheaply built and they don’t last . This house was built to last and also built in an era when things were built with true quality and care. If in 150 years those are the only cracks that have happened. That’s a really really good quality built structure . You’ve got a piece of national history there, a true piece of art. Stay the course my friend. The place is solid.

Many other chateau channels all have the same issues, wooden lintels under doors fail after 150 plus years and need to be replaced. Chateau de la Ferte is doing complete floor rebuild. As you are using the chateau for commercial purposes, you need to have an Engineering Depreciation report done on the entire structure.

I rarely comment, however it is so true that most of us think only about gathering ever more assets to protect us against. ..... what? When we die, there is nothing we can take with us, so If we can do even a small amount of good for others with what we have, then our lives will have been well lived. Good on you for sharing that . Carry on with your project. x

You have a beautiful chateau! So beautiful! Keep your faith and use your wisdom. The wise thing to do is protect your asset, put in concrete and iron supports before it cracks more. The wood has weakened and aged in time and compresses when it becomes spongey. When there are so many openings like the doors and windows there is less support and can give way quicker. Prayers to your good heart. Hope there is a good mason in your location.

I cannot wait to begin your series. 3 whole seasons of your "Fairy Tale" existence! I saw you used that word in one of your episodes so I'm teasing a bit. As I began playing your episode I was....oh she married an American but then she spoke! I'm looking forward to hearing what road led you to this Chateau! I've got 100 plus questions! I'd love to tour all three countries who have these amazing estates over a spring to fall for a long deserved trip but budget will not allow. Gosh it really is a pretty chateau. That parable throws me each time I read it, but I finally get it too. Still not happy that the cheater gets praise for looking after himself at the expense of his boss. Nothing on earth lasts nor is it important in the grand scheme of things. So I guess, live your life good, but don't worry about hoarding or building wealth. In my humble opinion you do your best to keep the chateau safe during your life, that's it. The way you are using the chateau for others is a wonderful thing. A safe learning environment with a christian backdrop that should help them throughout their life. What a great opportunity those young people are experiencing.

Wise & Good words indeed 👏 👍 I noticed steel beams under the floor boards , I'm not a structural engineer but Steel sections similar to the Concrete mid section should be good for showing up that wall . It just needs an engineer to draw up plans & put in the Steel beams. The Chatueau is a Beautiful Jewel 😍 And should be used & as long as repairs are kept up it should last atleast another 150+ years .

I think you could alleviate most of your concerns if you can get a structural engineer in and evaluate and point out areas of concern and why and you can ask what to look for. A Château is different than a home in America. Heck, age of home in the US makes a difference. Newer homes are crap compared to older homes. Get a list of questions ready and take notes and file them away. Honestly, the rusted out beam under the terrace is likely a mich bigger concern than the sagging under the doors. You will be fine. Have faith in yourself as you have a higher power guiding you.....sure there will be expensive hiccups but you have been resourceful thus far. I wonder if getting a visa and time off to do a solid year of fixing may not bring you the relief from worries you need. You could even add in another study abroad session or two to help make up some income? You made it through the pandemic and still have your home, you can get through this if armed with knowledge. Ask SE for rough estimates of repairs and how they would prioritize too.

Although not Christian, I can agree with the thought of using your stuff for good. A house as an appreciating asset is a North America idea. In other places people value it as a place to live and look at it as a quality of life investment, not a financial investment. And any building, anywhere, of any age, constructed of any material will deteriorate without maintenance. You just happen to have a bigger and older building to maintain than most. The chateau has stood for this long and with a good roof will stand for many years. You made a smart move by calling in engineers. The chateau is in good hands!

Expensive buildings don’t retain their value well at all. It makes sense that a 5000sqft building clad in marble, with chandeliers, and huge wood beams should cost a million dollars. But no one wants to spend a million plus dollars on a building that needs structural work and can’t be used right away. That’s one of the reasons many buildings in big cities are torn down and rebuilt by big companies. They know everything is new and will last longer even if it’s more expensive upfront

Good reminder ,Rob. Often we get hung up on having things that really won’t last the passage of time. I often think of that verse in Luke 12 about those who have much , much is required. And I do support various Parachurch organizations ,plus give to those in need quietly, and of course, tithe to my local church. I also have a son, in ministry as teacher in Christian university courses in .Nfld., his wife a youth pastor. He’s doing his PhD in Philosophy online at a Welsh Christian University, so I’m supporting him in that. All that to say there are times when I feel I’m not doing enough with what God has so graciously blessed me with. And sometimes I feel guilty spending money on a bauble for myself. But God continue to bless you and Leslie for all the joy of experiences you bring to your students. Don’t ever worry about your chateau for” God is able to do more than we ask ,according to the riches of His Glory”.

Right on, Rob. We know from the doctrine of eschatology that the earth will be destroyed and made new. So absolutely. Everything we see around us (no matter how beautiful and "valuable") will eventually crumble. The message then is, set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Right now, my wife and I are simply trying to put both daughters through a private Bible college, and that goal requires a big chunk of change. So while money is ultimately of little importance, it can be very important in the short term to achieve long-term goals. I see you doing the same thing (making a difference in lives) through the chateau.

I had no idea where you were going with the depreciable asset conversation, but I continued to listen. Your parable was interesting. I really appreciate your insight. Comments are interesting as always. The fact that your perspective grows and changes is a good thing. Regardless of the sensitivity of some to faith related topics it seems to me that your world view is of value in very down to earth issues. The Bible addresses aspects of practical life as well as or in tandem with the story of redemption. Much of that reality came from the way the world was then. Essentially human nature and physical circumstances don’t change. You are touching lives and stimulating consideration of how we all fit in and what our true responsibilities are to others, to the culture, and to the world. Keep it up!

I sometimes puzzle over why so many non French want to save these buildings and make a life and a living from them. Your approach is different. You want to use it for good and not to make money from it. The paradigm shift came to me when we had to decide to renovate our simple house or buy a newer and better one. In the end we decided our present house was sufficient for our daily needs, a newer, bigger house would not change the way we lived. I thought how our resource should not be tied up in buildings, as you say, but the quality of life we can share with others.

Why the trigger warning? The Bible is full of wonderful and terrible stories that we can all learn from no matter our religious beliefs unless the point is to force change. There’s a reason the Bible has lasted through time. It’s beautiful allegory. When I think of Christianity I think of people who understand that love is the best response to everything. You are really living the Christian philosophy Rob. I throughly enjoyed hearing your thoughts. I regard my religious philosophy as Christian/Atheist as I gave mentioned in other comments here. I know that’s a difficult term to make sense of but it truly defines my beliefs. You guys are doing a great thing with the chateau helping young people understand other cultures and the vastness of the world!

You can’t have Christian beliefs and be an Atheist. Atheist means you don’t believe in God. Are you trying to say you have Christian beliefs but don’t believe in organised religion? Or maybe you are Agnostic?

Houses became an expense in the ‘80s. That is misconception about appreciating over time. Prior to ‘80 yes but them the value of money depreciated so houses do not appreciate and should be treated as an expense. I am not finance specialists but math major and did some research before buying a home because I was single female. I personally believe the chateau is also an expense. You have to look at the value of money it is not appreciating but it is in fact depreciating so you can’t compare apples to apples.

Put your worries about the structural integrity of the chateau, into the hands of our Dear Lord! He brought the chateau into your life, and he will provide for its upkeep! All things on this Earth belong to our Father, he will do with it as he sees fit! We are at best, merely custodians of all of his assets! Nothing is worth loosing a nights sleep over! What you are really worried about is your future! God has that taken care of that also! Faith, Faith, and then more Faith, in our Holy Father, that is the key! Turn it over to him, and then assumed it has been taken care of!

I know what you can do with the Chateau. I know my kids would LOVE ❤️ to do your learning abroad minus the bible sessions (sorry). This way even if it was one session a year you could make some money towards the Chateau and yourselves. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Also I know it’s a France thing but why do everything only operate in Summer? Aussies travel all year round. We would love a Christmas markets trip

I have watched almost all of your blogs, even looked forward to them, but, as a Christian, I hate when you call out a “Trigger Warning “ for those who don’t want to hear the word of God… there’s a really good chance that those who are tuning out at that point are those who would need to hear it most!🙏🏻❤️

If you can discern the times, know good from evil, you can lie to the devil who is the evil one. The thief comes not, but to steal, to kill and destroy. The Kingdom of Heaven is within you. You have dominion over the works of God's hands. Be the good Steward. He who has power to do good, should... Bless you. He who has much, more will be given. God has entrusted you with much... Keep fighting the good fight.
